Stanley Cup Playoffs, Richard C. Crepeau Jul 1999

Stanley Cup Playoffs, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

In the recently concluded Stanley Cup playoffs the point was made repeatedly that the road to the Cup is a war of attrition. Unlike other sports leagues, the National Hockey League does not require their teams to reveal injuries, and in fact disguising and hiding injuries has become a major art form in the NHL, while trainers and team doctors have come to rival coaches in their significance. Various drugs have become the key elements to victory.

1-Butaneboronic Acid Binding To Aeromonas Proteolytica Aminopeptidase:  A Case Of Arrested Development, Carin C. De Paola, Brian Bennett, Richard C. Holz, Dagmar Ringe, Gregory A. Petsko

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

Hydrolases containing two metal ions connected by a bridging ligand catalyze reactions important in carcinogensis, tissue repair, post-translational modification, control and regulation of biochemical pathways, and protein degradation. The aminopeptidase from Aeromonas proteolytica serves as a paradigm for the study of such bridged bimetallic proteases since its three-dimensional structure is known to very high resolution and its catalytic reaction is amenable to spectroscopic examination. Herein, we report the X-ray crystal structure at 1.9 Å resolution of AAP complexed with 1-butaneboronic acid (BuBA). This structure suggests that this complex represents a snapshot of the proteolytic reaction in an arrested form between …

An Empirical Evaluation Of Specialized Law Reviews, Chris Guthrie, Tracey E. George Jul 1999

An Empirical Evaluation Of Specialized Law Reviews, Chris Guthrie, Tracey E. George

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

The sudden, rapid, and widespread increase in the number of specialized law reviews has attracted relatively little scholarly attention even though it is the most significant development in legal academic publishing in the second half of the twentieth century. As a consequence, there is a dearth of information about the proliferation, significance, and status of specialized reviews. In this Article, we attempt to fill this information gap by documenting the rise of the specialized review and by providing an empirical ranking of the top 100 specialized reviews.

The Effect Of Shareholder Proposals On Executive Compensation, Randall Thomas, Kenneth J. Martin Jul 1999

The Effect Of Shareholder Proposals On Executive Compensation, Randall Thomas, Kenneth J. Martin

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

During the last decade, the stratospheric increases in Chief Executive Officer (CEO) pay levels have made executive compensation a popular target for shareholder activism, particularly when high pay is accompanied by poor corporate performance. Outraged investors have made their views know to corporate boards of directors using shareholder proposals, binding bylaw amendments, "Just Vote No" campaigns, and other activist efforts. As institutional and other shareholders have attempted to monitor board decisions, the question remains: Have their efforts been successful in influencing executive compensation?

Core-Binding Factor Influences The Disease Specificity Of Moloney Murine Leukemia Virus, Amy F. Lewis, Terryl Stacy, William R. Green, Lekidelu Taddesse-Heath, Janet W. Hartley, Nancy A. Speck Jul 1999

Core-Binding Factor Influences The Disease Specificity Of Moloney Murine Leukemia Virus, Amy F. Lewis, Terryl Stacy, William R. Green, Lekidelu Taddesse-Heath, Janet W. Hartley, Nancy A. Speck

Dartmouth Scholarship

The core site in the Moloney murine leukemia virus (Moloney MLV) enhancer was previously shown to be an important determinant of the T-cell disease specificity of the virus. Mutation of the core site resulted in a significant shift in disease specificity of the Moloney virus from T-cell leukemia to erythroleukemia. We and others have since determined that a protein that binds the core site, one of the core-binding factors (CBF) is highly expressed in thymus and is essential for hematopoiesis. Here we test the hypothesis that CBF plays a critical role in mediating pathogenesis of Moloney MLV in vivo. We …

The Effects Of High Median Age On Currency Of Resources In Community College Library Collections, Anna H. Perrault, Richard Madaus, Ann Armbrister, Jeannie Dixon, Rhonda Smith

School of Information Faculty Publications

In 1998, a comprehensive study was conducted of the monograph collections of the twenty-eight public community colleges in Florida. This article reports the findings of that study with respect to median age and currency of resources. The rationale for the interpretation of the findings in the Florida Community College Collection Assessment Project is congruent with the philosophy that college collections should emphasize the instructional and curricular needs of students and, therefore, that the collections should emphasize current resources rather than retrospective depth. The findings on median age from the Florida Community College study serve as an example for the discussion …

Trust And Ethics In International Business Negotiations: A Cross-Cultural Analysis, Mohammad Niamat Elahee Jul 1999

Trust And Ethics In International Business Negotiations: A Cross-Cultural Analysis, Mohammad Niamat Elahee

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The growing interdependence in the global economic and political arena is resulting in accelerated growth in cross-national commercial relationships. Since some form of negotiation precedes most commercial activities and relationships, the topic of cross-cultural negotiation is of crucial importance to academicians, practitioners, and policy formulators. Despite its importance, research on cross-cultural business negotiation has not been very systematic and most of the empirical studies lack the explanatory power that is necessary for theory building. This study attempts to overcome this shortcoming by systematically linking different dimensions of national culture with different types of negotiation behavior.

This dissertation studies the relationship …

Clinical Trials In Alzheimer Disease: Debate On The Use Of Placebo Controls, Peter J. Whitehouse Jul 1999

Clinical Trials In Alzheimer Disease: Debate On The Use Of Placebo Controls, Peter J. Whitehouse

Faculty Scholarship

During the past 10 years, there has been a rapidly growing number of pharmaceutical industry-sponsored drug trials for treatment of Alzheimer disease (AD) and other neurodegenerative diseases. As public awareness and concerns about AD have grown, so has interest in developing drug therapies for retarding symptom progression, delaying onset, and ultimately curing the disease. Ethical debate on the use of placebo control trials in AD research has come of age in the United States with the availability of treatments approved by the Food and Drug Administration. The experts and the public agree that more effective therapies are necessary, and new …

Density-Dependent Effects Of A Toxicant On Life-History Traits And Population Dynamics Of A Capitellid Polychaete, Inez Linke-Gamenick, Valery E. Forbes, Richard M. Sibly Jul 1999

Density-Dependent Effects Of A Toxicant On Life-History Traits And Population Dynamics Of A Capitellid Polychaete, Inez Linke-Gamenick, Valery E. Forbes, Richard M. Sibly

Valery Forbes Publications

The toxic effects of the widespread polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), fluoranthene (FLU), on Life-history traits of Capitella sp. M as a function of population density were investigated in a life-table-response-experiment (LTRE) lasting 134 d. Animals from laboratory cultures were exposed to 6 different FLU concentrations (range 0 to 80 μg FLU [g dry wt sed]–1, ppm) at 3 population densities (range 529 to 36 842 worms m–2), and survivorship, growth rate until maturity, and reproductive parameters were recorded. Fluoranthene exposure significantly reduced juvenile survivorship in a concentration- dependent manner, whereas population density had no effect on …

A Comparison Of Cognitive Development Between Whites And African Americans Based On William Perry's Scheme Of Intellectual And Ethical Development, Joan Johnson Jul 1999

A Comparison Of Cognitive Development Between Whites And African Americans Based On William Perry's Scheme Of Intellectual And Ethical Development, Joan Johnson

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

This study compared cognitive complexity between student groups based on cultural background and academic class utilizing William Perry's (1970) cognitive theory of intellectual and ethical development. In addition, the study examined the influence of gender and socioeconomic status (SES) on cognitive development. The goal was to ascertain whether Perry's theory, developed from his research on a relatively homogeneous college student population without consideration of the impact of a culturally diverse environment, would be valid for culturally diverse students.

The research design employed to investigate cognitive development used a cross-sectional sample of entering freshmen and graduating seniors attending a predominantly White, …
