An Exploratory Study Of The Correlates Of Drug Use Among Juveniles: Analysis Of Regional Variations In The United States, Denise D. Nation

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

Research on substance use and abuse has increased exponentially over the past twenty-five years. However, research focusing on regional differences in drug use seems to be very limited. The purpose of this study is to examine the correlates of drug use among juveniles in the four major geographic regions of the United States: the Northeast, the North Central, the South and the West. Here, drug use is defined in terms of alcohol and marijuana use for the age group 12-19. Four research hypotheses are proposed. The 1996 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse data was used to assess and analyze …

Understanding The "Social Gifts" Of Drinking Rituals: An Alternative Framework For Psa Developers, Debbie Treise, Joyce M. Wolburg, Cele C. Otnes Jul 1999

Understanding The "Social Gifts" Of Drinking Rituals: An Alternative Framework For Psa Developers, Debbie Treise, Joyce M. Wolburg, Cele C. Otnes

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

Binge drinking behavior has been described as the most significant health hazard on college campuses today. Using definitions of ritual behavior drawn from the literature, the authors conducted focus groups, depth interviews, and participant observations to explore the ritualized nature of alcohol beverage consumption among college students at two large universities. The themes that emerged provide an understanding of the rituals associated with college student drinking. With the drinking-as-ritual interpretation as a theoretical framework, the authors discuss how developers of public service announcements (PSAs) could capture and contextualize drinking rituals and thus make PSAs more relevant to the target audience. …

The Effects Of Assets On The Economic Well-Being Of Women After Marital Disruption, Estheryin-Nei Cho Jul 1999

The Effects Of Assets On The Economic Well-Being Of Women After Marital Disruption, Estheryin-Nei Cho

Center for Social Development Research

This study uses panel data from the National Longitudinal Surveys of Youth to examine the effects of assets on the economic well-being of women one year after marital disruption. Instrumental variable estimation and seemingly unrelated regression are used. Results suggest that financial assets have positive effects on the post-disruption economic well being of women. Financial assets significantly increase income (including earnings) and reduce welfare receipt. In addition, the coefficients of human capital variables are substantially inflated in models without asset variables, suggesting that the effects of assets are captured by human capital variables when asset variables are omitted. In addition …

Manufactured Gas In California, 1852-1940: Basis For Remedial Action, Allen W. Hatheway Jul 1999

Manufactured Gas In California, 1852-1940: Basis For Remedial Action, Allen W. Hatheway

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

California was a relatively late entry (1852) in the manufactured gas industry. However, its gas entrepreneurs showed considerable invention and enterprise in establishing more than 250 separate gas plants, this in a total geographic environment approximating a whole nation of separate-operating and now environmentally endangering, conditions. Virtually all of the many gas generation processes and patent variations were employed in the state, and a wide variety of geologic conditions have created an even wider variety of fate and transport conditions related to their far and other residuals. A complex development of holding companies and other management forms also need interpretation …

The Globalisation Of Crime, Mark Findlay Jul 1999

The Globalisation Of Crime, Mark Findlay

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

As with many emergent themes in today's society, globalisation is simple and complex. Put simply, it is the collapsing of time and space; the process whereby through mass communication, multi-national commerce, internationalised politics, and transnational regulation we seem to be moving inexorably towards a single culture. The more complex interpretation of globalisation is as paradox - wherein there are as many pressures driving us in the direction of the common culture as those keeping us apart.

Views From The Drugs Summit, Mark Findlay

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The jury is still out on whether the Drugs Summit was a political set piece. The Opposition participants regularly accused the Government of just that. Without doubt, however, it was the reaction of the Opposition which was orchestrated and pre-conceived.

Federal Court Positively Adopts A Federal Common Law Testimonial Privilege For Mediation: Is It Justified - Folb V. Motion Picture Industry Pension & (And) Health Plans, Ryan D. O'Dell

Journal of Dispute Resolution

Mediation is a popular means of alternative dispute resolution that has proliferated in recent years. Virtually every state has adopted some form of testimonial privilege to protect the confidentiality of private parties participating in mediation. The federal courts, however, have never adopted a mediation privilege protecting the confidentiality of mediation between private parties in federal court. Federal courts have relied on other evidentiary, procedural and contractual protections to ensure that communications articulated during mediation will not be used for purposes outside mediation proceedings. Finding these protections inadequate to insulate parties in private mediation proceedings from third party discovery, the United …

A Vibrio Cholerae Lysr Homolog, Aphb, Cooperates With Apha At The Tcpph Promoter To Activate Expression Of The Toxr Virulence Cascade, Gabriela Kovacikova, Karen Skorupski Jul 1999

A Vibrio Cholerae Lysr Homolog, Aphb, Cooperates With Apha At The Tcpph Promoter To Activate Expression Of The Toxr Virulence Cascade, Gabriela Kovacikova, Karen Skorupski

Dartmouth Scholarship

We describe here a new member of the LysR family of transcriptional regulators, AphB, which is required for activation of the Vibrio cholerae ToxR virulence cascade. AphB activates the transcription of the tcpPH operon in response to environmental stimuli, and this process requires cooperation with a second protein, AphA. The expression of neither aphA or aphB is strongly regulated by environmental stimuli, raising the possibility that the activities of the proteins themselves may be influenced under various conditions. Strains of the El Tor biotype of V. cholerae typically exhibit lower expression of ToxR-regulated virulence genes in vitro than classical strains …

Dichotomy Between Naïve And Memory Cd4+ T Cell Responses To Fas Engagement, J. Desbarats, T. Wade, W. F. Wade, M. K. Newell Jul 1999

Dichotomy Between Naïve And Memory Cd4+ T Cell Responses To Fas Engagement, J. Desbarats, T. Wade, W. F. Wade, M. K. Newell

Dartmouth Scholarship

Engagement of Fas (APO-1, CD95), a member of the tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily, can induce apoptotic cell death. However, Fas engagement also can costimulate lymphocyte proliferation. The physiologic regulation of these two outcomes is poorly understood. Here, we have used two systems, the first in vitro and the second in vivo, to demonstrate that naïve and memory CD4+ T cells display dichotomous responses to Fas ligation. Naïve CD4+ T cells (CD44lo, CD45RB+, CD62L+) die as a consequence of Fas ligation in the presence of anti-CD3 antibody, whereas memory T cells (CD44hi, CD45RB−, CD62L−), freshly isolated from the same …

Do You See What I See?: A Study Of Actual And Perceived Physical Appearance Attitudes In Romantic Relationships, Laura Catherine Rieves Jul 1999

Do You See What I See?: A Study Of Actual And Perceived Physical Appearance Attitudes In Romantic Relationships, Laura Catherine Rieves

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The present research investigated actual and perceived physical appearance attitudes within a romantic relationship. Past research has suggested that people are often inaccurate in perceiving the opposite sex's physical appearance ideals for one' own sex. Ninety-three heterosexual couples completed anonymous questionnaires measuring appearance satisfaction, perceived partner attitudes and effects, relationship satisfaction and sexual satisfaction. Evaluative ratings of appearance were taken from three perspectives — Self, Perceived Partner, and Actual Partner. For both sexes, all three perspectives were significantly different from one another. Regarding the accuracy of perceived partner attitudes about one's appearance, men and women were only modestly accurate and …

African American Community Mental Health Center Service Utilization: A Test Of The Cultural Compatibility Hypothesis, Alicia Michelle Marsh Jul 1999

African American Community Mental Health Center Service Utilization: A Test Of The Cultural Compatibility Hypothesis, Alicia Michelle Marsh

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

This exploratory study examined whether community mental health centers (CMHCs) in Virginia that had services evaluated as being more compatible with the cultural needs of African Americans attracted a higher percentage of adult African American service users from their catchment areas than CMHCs which were evaluated as being less culturally compatible. The cultural compatibility of 36 CMHCs was assessed via a telephone interview with their clinical directors using a modified version of the Cultural Competence Self-Assessment Questionnaire: Administrative Version (Mason, J., 1995). This study did not find a correlation between CMHCs' cultural compatibility and their success at attracting African American …

The Effects Of School Uniforms On Student Behavior And Perceptions In An Urban Middle School, Jacqueline M. Mccarty Jul 1999

The Effects Of School Uniforms On Student Behavior And Perceptions In An Urban Middle School, Jacqueline M. Mccarty

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

Public opinion polls have consistently highlighted the prevalence of violence in America's schools. Specifically, school personnel have witnessed increased assault and theft related to the wearing of expensive clothing. Concomitantly, administrators have noted decreased attendance rates triggered by clothing issues. Given the gravity of these problems, school officials nationwide have enacted uniform policies in hopes of improving school safety and student behavior. However, current research establishing the effectiveness of these policies is largely anecdotal. The few studies utilizing empirical measures mainly highlight short-term outcomes and often fail to address student perceptions regarding clothing-related problems.

By contrast, this study investigated the …

There is a limited amount of research covering the topic of computer software piracy. Few studies focus specifically on software piracy, while the vast majority looks at various forms of unauthorized access and computer hacking. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether students possess attitudes that are supportive of computer-software piracy. Here, attitude means the feeling one has about a certain topic. Operationally, attitude is defined as holding a favorable or unfavorable view of computer-software piracy. Eight research hypotheses are proposed. In order to explore the research question and test the hypotheses, a thirty-six-item questionnaire was administered to …

Exploring Participation Processes For Technology Development: Case Studies Of Biotechnology Research And Development Projects In Thailand, Omjai Yuktavetya Jul 1999

Exploring Participation Processes For Technology Development: Case Studies Of Biotechnology Research And Development Projects In Thailand, Omjai Yuktavetya

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

There is increased awareness in the organizational and management literature that participation can make contributions in technology development. One of the problems in developing biotechnology in Thailand is that only a small portion of publicly funded research and development projects directly result in commercial success. Among the reasons cited (TDRI 1992a) is a lack of collaboration between various stakeholders; therefore, an effective technology policy to support their participation is needed. This research explores current participation processes in biotechnology research and development projects in Thailand in which there were different perspectives among various stakeholders. The quantitative and qualitative methodologies developed here …

Generation Of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin Beta Subunit Specific Monoclonal Antibody Using A Synthetic Peptide, Zhe Huang Jul 1999

Generation Of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin Beta Subunit Specific Monoclonal Antibody Using A Synthetic Peptide, Zhe Huang

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is well known for early immunological and bioassay tests for early detection of pregnancy. Since the hormone specific beta subunit confers unique biological and immunological specificity to hCG, immunochemical measurement of hCG has achieved greater specificity and sensitivity in recent years by using either the beta subunit as an immunogen or a partially reduced beta subunit polypeptide chain. However, antiserum raised against the entire hCG beta subunit usually cross-reacts to some extent with human luteinizing hormone (hLH). hCG has been found to be present in the extract of tumors and minute quantities of hCG are synthesized …

This study investigated the relationships between perceptions of childhood relationships with parents, certain current self-conscious emotions, current religious orientation, and current risk-taking behaviors. The study also sought to develop models that would predict risk-taking behavior based on the other variables.

At an eastern university, 174 students (79 males) completed the Test of Self-Conscious Affect, Religious Life Inventory, Clark-Parent Child Relations Questionnaire, and the Past Frequency scale of the Cognitive Appraisal of Risky Events Questionnaire. Of these, 30 students were solicited from on-campus, religious organizations.

The data did not show an inverse relationship between “positive parenting” and shame proneness or risk-taking …

Identification And Characterization Of Determinants Of Head And Neck Tumor Cell Invasion, Yangguan Wu Jul 1999

Identification And Characterization Of Determinants Of Head And Neck Tumor Cell Invasion, Yangguan Wu

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is a common malignant disease with poor prognosis. The majority of patients die from local invasion or lymphatic metastasis. The mechanism(s) underlining the invasiveness of HNSCC are poorly understood. Utilizing a panel of HNSCC cell lines previously established in our laboratory, we tested the application and relevance of the three-step hypothesis of tumor invasion to HNSCC and investigated the mechanism(s) pertaining to the regulation of each step in the invasive process. Data presented in this thesis demonstrated that tumor cell invasion in HNSCC is a complex process involving three repeated sequential steps: adhesion, …
