Pre-Flight Characteristics Of The U.S. Air Force Academy's Falconsat-1, Raja Chari

Small Satellite Conference

FalconSat-l is the first of a series of small satellites being designed, built, and operated by cadets at the U.S. Air Force Academy. FalconSat-1 's primary mission is to carry the Charging Hazard and Wake Studies-Long Duration (CHAWS-LD) space physics experiment. This mission is accomplished by cadets from various academic departments working with faculty mentors and experts from industry and other universities. The culmination of this work will come on 15 Sep 99, when FalconSat-1 is lifted into a nearly sun-synchronous orbit atop the Air Force's new Minotaur launch vehicle. This paper summarizes the design of each major subsystem. The …

The Imager for Magnetopause-to-Aurora Global Exploration (IMAGE) mission will be the first of the new Mediumclass Explorer (MIDEX) missions to fly. Led by Southwest Research Institute with oversight from the Explorers Project Office at NASA GSFC, IMAGE is the first satellite mission dedicated to imaging the Earth's magnetosphere. IMAGE will utilize a combination of ultraviolet and neutral atom imaging instruments plus an RF sounder to map and image the temporal and spatial features of the magnetosphere. The eight science sensors are mounted to a single deckplate. The deckplate is enveloped in an eight-sided spacecraft bus, 225 cm across the flats, …

Novel Missions For Next Generation Microsatellites: The Results Of A Joint Afrl/Jpl Study, Ruth Moser, David Collins, Alok Das, Robert Ferber, George Jaivin, Richard Madison, Joseph Smith, Michael Stallard

Small Satellite Conference

The development of technologies for miniature, low-mass, high density components and of systems that efficiently utilize these teclmologies has enabled a path to the next generation of highly capable microsatellites in the range of 10 - 100-kg. The characteristics and capabilities of this emerging class of satellites are briefly described. These satellites have the potential for revolutionizing space missions owing to their small size, low cost, significant capability, and good return on investment. This paper documents conceptual microsatellite mission scenarios examined in a collaborative effort between the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory of the California …

Emerald: An Experimental Mission In Robust Distributed Space Systems , Christopher Kitts, Freddy Pranajaya, Julie Townsend, Robert Twiggs Aug 1999

Emerald: An Experimental Mission In Robust Distributed Space Systems , Christopher Kitts, Freddy Pranajaya, Julie Townsend, Robert Twiggs

Small Satellite Conference

Distributed space systems are often cited as a means of enabling vast performance increases ranging from enhanced mission capabilities to radical reductions in operations cost. To explore this concept, Stanford University and Santa Clara University have initiated development of a simple, low cost, two-satellite mission known as Emerald. The Emerald mission has several on-orbit goals. First, it will verify an array of component-level technologies necessary for enabling highly capable and robust distributed space systems. Second, it will combine these technologies to experiment with simple closed loop relative positioning, distributed control, and autonomous operation. Third, it will validate the distributed space …

Discrete Event Command And Control For Formation Flying Of Distributed Small Spacecraft Systems , P. A. Stadter Aug 1999

Discrete Event Command And Control For Formation Flying Of Distributed Small Spacecraft Systems , P. A. Stadter

Small Satellite Conference

A distributed, multi-vehicle concept for future space missions has been conceived as a solution to the problem of advancing space-based operations within budgetary constraints. Broadly named formation flying, this approach to designing distributed systems across multiple, spatially disbursed platforms is enabled by collectively coordinating a fleet of autonomous spacecraft to function as a unified system. Formation flying offers potential advantages of improved robustness, capability, and cost relative to complicated, single platform systems by using multiple, often small, spacecraft to perform complex multi-sensor tasks. A necessary element in the realization of formation flying systems is the development of methods and technologies …

Proba: Esa's Autonomy And Technology Demonstration Mission, Frederic Teston, Richard Creasey, J. Bermyn, D. Bemaerts, K. Mellab

Small Satellite Conference

Proba is an ESA mlSSlOn conceived for the purpose of demonstrating the opportunities and benefits of on-board autonomy. To this end, it offers a flight opportunity centered around the validation of the associated technological capabilities. The Proba spacecraft is equipped with a selected set of technologies providing advanced on-board functions for performing a number of mission operations functions with minimum ground involvement. The autonomy is exercised in realistic scenarios through the accommodation of four payload instruments.

Ace - A Canadian Small Science Satellite Mission, Harold Dahl, Wally Eliuk, Glen Rumbold, Randolph Shelly

Small Satellite Conference

The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) has initiated the Small Science Satellite (SCISAT) Program as a part of their ongoing space science program. The Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment (ACE) Mission from the University of Waterloo has been selected as the first SCISAT Mission, and will be launched in Q1, 2002 on board a Pegasus XL vehicle. The ACE spacecraft will be co-manifested on the Pegasus vehicle with another spacecraft which has not yet been selected. The ACE Mission will comprise instrumentation to measure atmospheric chemistry using the solar occultation method. The principal goal of the ACE Mission is to measure and to …

On-Orbit Performance Of The Orbcomm Spacecraft Constellation, Bhavesh Patel, Susanne Schroll, Andrew Lewin Aug 1999

On-Orbit Performance Of The Orbcomm Spacecraft Constellation, Bhavesh Patel, Susanne Schroll, Andrew Lewin

Small Satellite Conference

ORBCOMM is a low cost, two-way data messaging system that uses a constellation of 36 spacecraft to provide global coverage for a wide variety of applications. Following an aggressive launch schedule, Orbital Sciences Corporation (Orbital) launched 26 spacecraft within 10 months to set up the constellation that is now providing global service to subscribers. As of August 1999, the constellation spacecraft have already accumulated over 30 spacecraft-years of on-orbit experience while demonstrating excellent in-flight performance. The ORBCOMM spacecraft design epitomizes the mass, power, and volume efficiencies of Orbital's MicroStar spacecraft platform. Unlike a single spacecraft mission, the ORBCOMM constellation provides …

Small Satellites Constellations & Network: Architectures And Technologies, G. Tarel, F. Jubineau, H. Sainct, R. Dumas, A Martinez De Aragon

Small Satellite Conference

Based on two constellation missions cases ( data collect and disaster monitoring by SAR radar ), the study derives architectural and related technologies required in the field of future commercial « small » onstellations. Global management from centralized control station is chosen here, with intermitent inter-plan visibility for 1SL, as imposed by the low altitude and moderatly populated parameters.

Three Corner Sat Constellation: C&Dh, Stereoscopic Imaging, And End-To-End Data System , Elaine Hansen, Anthony Colaprete, Dan Rodier, Brian Underhill, Assi Friedman, Joyce Wong, Helen Reed, Stephen Horan, Bobby Anderson

Small Satellite Conference

The Three Corner Sat Constellation (3~Sat) consists of three nanosatellites, which will demonstrate stereo imaging, innovative command and data handling, and formation flying with RF communications and cellular phone communications. The creation of this constellation is a joint effort between Arizona State University (ASU), the University of Colorado at Boulder (CU), and New Mexico State University (NMSU). The 3~Sat will provide accurate stereo images and range data of a variety of meteorological phenomena. With three independent nanosatellites observing a particular scene, triangulation will provide accurate range information that will be used to create three-dimensional depth maps. The cooperative communications and …
