Small Satellite Conference

A new way to perform space missions utilizes the concept of clusters of satellites that cooperate to perform the function of a larger, single satellite. Each smaller satellite communicates with the others and shares the processing, communications, and payload or mission functions. The required functionality is thus spread across the satellites in the cluster, the aggregate forming a "virtual satellite". The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) initiated the TechSat 21 program to explore the basic technologies required to enable such distributed satellite systems. For this purpose, Space Based Radar (SBR) was selected as a reference mission to help identify technology …

Knowledge Server Toolkit: Perl-Based Automation Tools , David Mclean

Small Satellite Conference

A Perl Inference Engine (PIE), A Plan Executor (APE), and a Centroid Classifier (CCL) are described within the infrastructure provided by the Knowledge Server Toolkit (KST) environment. All these tools are implemented as Perl modules so that user's applications can easily use their capabilities. This technology was developed at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center under a task that was looking into languages and tools that are useful for automating satellite ground control systems. However, because these tools are modularized and knowledge driven, this technology should be generally applicable to many fields. After a background description, the Knowledge Representation (KR) and …

Optical Tracking Telemetry And Commanding (Tt&C) For Small Satellites , Michael Enoch, Sabrina Herrin, Lt. Col. Roberta Ewart, Dennis Mansell Aug 1999

Optical Tracking Telemetry And Commanding (Tt&C) For Small Satellites , Michael Enoch, Sabrina Herrin, Lt. Col. Roberta Ewart, Dennis Mansell

Small Satellite Conference

This paper presents information on the current state of technology and potential subsystem and operational concepts to allow the use of low power optical communication systems to perform tracking, telemetry and commanding (IT &C) for small satellites. The mantra of 'smaller, faster, better (& cheaper)' has been realized, at least partially, for many aspects of small satellite design, construction and operations. Most small spacecraft systems have become smaller, lighter and more power efficient while offering greater performance. Unfortunately, one area that has not followed this general trend is IT &C. In many ways, this situation takes on greater significance due …

Evaluating Small Satellites: Is The Risk Worth It?, Todd Mosher, Robert Bitten, Norman Lao, Eric Mahr, Riaz Musani

Small Satellite Conference

"Faster, Better, Cheaper - pick any two" say critics of NASA's current approach to scientific satellites. As proof, they point to the recent failed or impaired small science satellites: Lewis (failed shortly after reaching orbit), Clark (cancelled before leaving the ground), NEAR (trajectory altered due to engine shutdown) and WIRE (failure resulting in depletion of cryogen). Although the space industry has greatly increased their utilization of small satellites to conduct space activities, the question remains, Is Faster, Better, Cheaper (FBC) yielding a good return on investment? This paper takes a historical look at traditional science missions either flown or started …

Phosphoinositide-Ap-2 Interactions Required For Targeting To Plasma Membrane Clathrin-Coated Pits., I Gaidarov, James H. Keen Aug 1999

Phosphoinositide-Ap-2 Interactions Required For Targeting To Plasma Membrane Clathrin-Coated Pits., I Gaidarov, James H. Keen

Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers

The clathrin-associated AP-2 adaptor protein is a major polyphosphoinositide-binding protein in mammalian cells. A high affinity binding site has previously been localized to the NH(2)-terminal region of the AP-2 alpha subunit (Gaidarov et al. 1996. J. Biol. Chem. 271:20922-20929). Here we used deletion and site- directed mutagenesis to determine that alpha residues 21-80 comprise a discrete folding and inositide-binding domain. Further, positively charged residues located within this region are involved in binding, with a lysine triad at positions 55-57 particularly critical. Mutant peptides and protein in which these residues were changed to glutamine retained wild-type structural and functional characteristics by …

Insulin-Like Growth Factor Ii Signaling In Neoplastic Proliferation Is Blocked By Transgenic Expression Of The Metalloproteinase Inhibitor Timp-1, David C. Martin, John L. Fowlkes, Bojana Babic, Rama Khokha

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

Insulin-like growth factor (IGF) II is overexpressed in many human cancers and is reactivated by, and crucial for viral oncogene (SV40 T antigen, [TAg])-induced tumorigenesis in several tumor models. Using a double transgenic murine hepatic tumor model, we demonstrate that tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP-1) blocks liver hyperplasia during tumor development, despite TAg-mediated reactivation of IGF-II. Because the activity of IGFs is controlled by IGF-binding proteins (IGFBPs), we investigated whether TIMP-1 overexpression altered the IGFBP status in the transgenic liver. Ligand blotting showed that IGFBP-3 protein levels were increased in TIMP-1-overexpressing double transgenic littermates, whereas IGFBP-3 mRNA levels were …
