Sub-State Purchasing Of Managed Behavioral Health Care: An Analysis Of County-Level Managed Care Contracts, Joel B. Teitelbaum, D. Richard Mauery, Sara J. Rosenbaum Oct 1999

Sub-State Purchasing Of Managed Behavioral Health Care: An Analysis Of County-Level Managed Care Contracts, Joel B. Teitelbaum, D. Richard Mauery, Sara J. Rosenbaum

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

For this study, SAMHSA asked us to analyze county-level managed health care contracts that include behavioral health services. SAMHSA has indicated that sub-state entities, particularly counties, are beginning to explore the feasibility of contracting with managed care organizations, both to control costs and to improve coordination of services for the mental health or substance abuse systems they manage. In commissioning these various contract studies, SAMHSA was primarily interested in tracking the development of these new types of managed behavioral health care procurements and contracting practices, as well as determining whether there were exemplary commercial behavioral health provisions that could be …

A Unique Sisterhood The African Women's Alliance For Mobilizing Action, Margaret S. Busé Oct 1999

A Unique Sisterhood The African Women's Alliance For Mobilizing Action, Margaret S. Busé

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Originally formed in 1997 as an advocate for African women's education. The African Women's Alliance for Mobilizing Action (AWAMA) quickly undertook the cause to support landmine victims and landmine removal. Working in the province of Zambezia in central Mozambique, Thelma Venichand, director of AWAMA, has no shortage of volunteers, and victims requiring assistance and integration. But, what AWAMA lacks is funding. Currently, their landmine-assistance programs and other support services are on hold till funding and financial aid for their project is received. They are hoping an organization and/or donor will step forward to coordinate efforts with them.

Mine Action's Cracked Pillar, Joe Lokey Oct 1999

Mine Action's Cracked Pillar, Joe Lokey

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Just about anyone doing anything regarding land mines knows the four pillars of mine action. We routinely acknowledge that mine awareness, mine clearance, victim assistance and advocacy must all proceed simultaneously if the world is to be aware of the threat of mines, have safe roads, fields and schoolyards, support the rehabilitation and reintegration of victims and survivors, and convince all governments to move quickly toward a mine-free world.

Visual-Vestibular Habituation And Balance Training For Motion Sickness, Rose Marie Rine, Michael C. Schubert, Thomas J. Balkany

Physical Therapy Faculty Research

Background and Purpose. This case report describes physical therapy for motion sickness in a 34-year-old woman. The purpose of the report is twofold: (1) to provide an overview of the literature regarding motion sickness syndrome, causal factors, and rationale for treatment and (2) to describe the evaluation and treatment of a patient with motion sickness.

What You Should Know About Landmine Victims, Margaret S. Busé Oct 1999

What You Should Know About Landmine Victims, Margaret S. Busé

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

One million people have been killed and maimed by anti-personnel mines. Twenty-six thousand people a year become victims, 70 people a day, or around one person every 15 minutes. Three hundred thousand children and counting are severely disabled because of landmines. Half the people who step on an anti-personnel mine die from their injuries before they are found or taken to hospital. An even higher percentage of children die because, being smaller, their vital organs are closer to the blast. After the end of hostilities, decades afterwards, anyone who strays into a mine field is at risk. Everyone is vulnerable: …

The Only Thing You Really Got Is This Minute: Homeless Women Re-Visioning The Future, Kathryn M. Feltey, Laura Nichols Oct 1999

The Only Thing You Really Got Is This Minute: Homeless Women Re-Visioning The Future, Kathryn M. Feltey, Laura Nichols

Sociology

As we enter the millennium, growing numbers of women and children join the ranks of the homeless around the globe. 1 Common factors contributing to homelessness include the feminization of poverty, a shortage of affordable low-income housing and welfare policies focused on short-term relief. Unique factors include war and political upheaval that produce a mobile population of refugees who are homeless.

In thinking about the corning millennium, feminists are challenged to envision a future where the economics and politics of gender do not inevitably produce poverty and homelessness. Homelessness in women's lives is both a symptom and an outcome of …
