Landmine Survivors Network (LSN) currently chairs the ICBL Working Group on Victim Assistance. It is in this capacity, working together with over 20 humanitarian and development non-governmental organizations (NGOs), my ICBL colleagues and I welcome this opportunity to discuss Article 6 which covers States Parties responsibility to provide "care and rehabilitation, and social and economic reintegration of mine victims."

Toxic waste has become an increasing public health problem in America.' Congress enacted the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act CCERCLA" or "the Ace) in 1980, as a means to improve the efficiency of hazardous waste site cleanups. CERCLA encourages parties to clean up toxic sites by allowing those parties to recover response costs from potentially responsible parties (TRPs"). To accomplish this goal, CERCLA contains an expansive liability scheme that imposes strict liability on, among others, a party that has released or threatened release of a toxic substance that has caused or may cause the incurrence of response costs. …

There is little doubt that soocioeconomic background is an important concept among social researchers and policy developers. First and foremost, the relationships between socioeconomic status with educational and labour market outcomes is an important indicator of the degree of social equity and the success of policies aimed at reducing social inequality. Although there is almost universal agreement on the importance of socioeconomic status there is little agreement on its conceptualisation and measurement. There are a variety of issues relating to socioeconomic status which have produced considerable debate. Outbreak Of West Nile-Like Viral Encephalitis -- New York, 1999, Centers For Disease Control And Prevention, Denis Nash

Publications and Research

An outbreak of arboviral encephalitis was first recognized in New York City in late August and has since been identified in neighboring counties in New York state. Although initially attributed to St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) virus based on positive serologic findings in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum samples using a virus-specific IgM-capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), the cause of the outbreak has been confirmed as a West Nile-like virus based on the identification of virus in human, avian, and mosquito.

Her Majesty Queen Noor visited Vietnam and Cambodia in October 1999 to see firsthand the plight of the land mine problem in these countries. As the patron of the Landmine Survivors Network (LSN), she also does fundraising activities for the organization. She recently was in the United States working in this capacity in September 1999.
