Assessing Medical Students' Competence In Obtaining Informed Consent""", Laura Weiss Roberts, Jan Mines, Carolyn Voss, Cheri Koinis, Steve Mitchell, Scott Obenshain, Teresita Mccarty

UME Faculty and Staff Educational Scholarship

BACKGROUND: Medical schools increasingly place emphasis on preparing students to perform routine, ethically important clinical activities with sensitivity and acumen. A method for evaluating students skills in obtaining informed consent that was created at our institution is described. METHODS: Formal assessment of medical students' professional attitudes, values, and ethics skills occurs in the context of three required and developmentally attuned comprehensive examinations. A videotaped station tested senior medical students' ability to obtain informed consent from a standardized patient who expresses concern about undergoing cardiac catheterization. Two checklists were completed by the patient. Videotapes were reviewed by a faculty member, and …

Daubert Readiness Of Texas Judiciary: A Study Of The Qualifications, Experience, And Capacity Of The Members Of The Texas Judiciary To Determine The Admissibility Of Expert Testimony Under The Daubert, Kelly, Robinson, And Havner Tests, Cynthia Stevens Kent

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

This article will look at the results of a survey conducted among Texas judges regarding their background, experience, training, and confidence in performing this gate-keeping function. First, it is important to review the history of judicial decision-making as it applies to the admissibility of expert testimony. What have been the legal guidelines for admissibility and how has the recent case law changed those legal standards? Second, what did the survey of Texas judges tell us about their education and perceived ability to perform the gate-keeping role? Are Journalists Qualified To Write About Health And Science?, Burnis R. Morris

SOJMC Faculty Research

This article examines the preparation of journalists to report on health and science issues. It traces the historical linkage between the news media and health and science and reports the results of a survey of college professors who teach reporting courses at 86 departments and schools of journalism and mass communication. The article, also intended to help explain the journalistic method to scientists, concludes that many young journalists are qualified to cover simple stories about health and science and other topics when they leave college and acquire the skills to report on more complex issues through on-the-job training and specialized …
