Pfiesteria Piscicida And Dinoflagellates Similar To Pfiesteria, Harold G. Marshall Jan 1999

Pfiesteria Piscicida And Dinoflagellates Similar To Pfiesteria, Harold G. Marshall

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Pfiesteria pisiccida is a microscopic, unicellular organism that is classified as both a mixotrophic and heterotrophic dinoflagellate, which has been associated with both fish deaths and a cause of human illness (Burkholder et al., 1992; Glasglow et al., 1995; Burkholder and Glasgow, 1997). This species possesses a complex life cycle that includes motile forms (e.g. zoospores, gametes, amoebae) and a cyst stage that may remain dormant in the sediment (Burkholder et al, 1995b). Pfiesteria piscicida is known to have toxin and non-toxin producing populations, where cyst transformation into the toxic motile zoospores may be initiated by the presence of certain …

Water Quality Relationships To Concentrations Of Pfiesteria-Like Organisms In Virginia Estuaries For 1998., Everett P. Weber, Harold G. Marshall

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

A series of statistical analyses were performed to identify the relationship between abundance of dinoflagellates grouped as Pfiesteria-like organisms and a set of 25 water quality variables from May through October of 1998 at 41 estuarine locations. Although regions were identified in relation to seasonal density of cells present, there were no strong relationships to specific water quality variables. Factors that may have influenced these results included: a) several species were included in the group analyzed and this composite did not respond as a unit to changing environmental conditions; b) cell concentrations were low and there were a large …

Multiple Category Decision Making: Review And Synthesis, Gary J. Russell, S. Ratneshwar, Allan D. Shocker, David Bell, Anand Bodapati, Alex Degeratu, Lutz Hildebrandt, Namwoon Kim, Seshan Ramaswami, Venkatesh H. Shankar Jan 1999

Multiple Category Decision Making: Review And Synthesis, Gary J. Russell, S. Ratneshwar, Allan D. Shocker, David Bell, Anand Bodapati, Alex Degeratu, Lutz Hildebrandt, Namwoon Kim, Seshan Ramaswami, Venkatesh H. Shankar

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In many purchase environments, consumers use information from a number of product categories prior to making a decision. These purchase situations create dependencies in choice outcomes across categories. As such, these decision problems cannot be easily modeled using the single-category, single-choice paradigm commonly used by researchers in marketing. We outline a conceptual framework for categorization, and then discuss three types of cross-category dependence: cross-category consideration cross-category learning, and product bundling. We argue that the key to modeling choice dependence across categories is knowledge of the goals driving consumer behavior.

Insights For The Management Of Different Locust Species From New Findings On The Chemical Ecology Of The Desert Locust, Ahmed Hassanali, Magzoub Omer Bashir

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Recent studies on the chemical ecology of the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria, have unravelled a rich and complex system of pheromonal and other semiochemical-mediated communication in this insect. The key pheromones associated with such behavioural processes as social cohesion and communal egg-laying have been characterised. The semiochemical bases of such physiological processes as maturation of solitarious insects before the arrival of seasonal rains, development of gregarious traits in crowded solitarious insects, development of maturation synchrony in gregarious insects, and maternal transfer of gregarious characters to the offspring are better understood. Desert locust semiochemicals are finding two principal uses: as tools …

Comparative Evaluation Of Cotesia Flavipes And C. Sesamiae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) For The Management Of Chilo Partellus (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) In Kenya, M. N. Sallam, W. A. Overholt, E. Kairu Jan 1999

Comparative Evaluation Of Cotesia Flavipes And C. Sesamiae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) For The Management Of Chilo Partellus (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) In Kenya, M. N. Sallam, W. A. Overholt, E. Kairu

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Cotesia flavipes Cameron, a gregarious larval endoparasitoid native to the Indo-Australian region, was imported from Pakistan and released in Kenya in 1993 for management of the exotic stemborer, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe). Recent reports confirmed the successful establishment of the parasitoid in three locations in Kenya and in northern Tanzania. Functional response studies on this parasitoid and an indigenous congener, Cotesia sesamiae (Cameron), indicated that C. flavipes had a higher searching ability and attacked more larvae when Chilo partellus was the host. When a native stemborer, Sesamia calamistis Hampson, was the host, there was no significant difference between numbers attacked by …

Analysis Of The Status Of Women Faculty In The United States Since The Enactment Of Equality Legislation In The 1970s: What Do The Numbers Suggest?, Annie M. Stith-Willis Jan 1999

Analysis Of The Status Of Women Faculty In The United States Since The Enactment Of Equality Legislation In The 1970s: What Do The Numbers Suggest?, Annie M. Stith-Willis

Theses and Dissertations

The primary research question is: What changes have occurred in the status of women faculty members in higher education in the United States from 1974 to 1995. Status is determined by evaluating differences by sex in: the number of faculty, the tenure status, the average salary, the average salary by faculty rank, the percent of faculty to percent of earned doctoral degrees, and the percent of faculty to percent of enrolled students in higher education. The period since the enactment of equality legislation in the 19705 in the United States provides a time frame for this research. The ongoing legislative …

The Ethics Of Human Genetic Enhancement: Extending The Public Policy Debate, John J. Baumann Jan 1999

The Ethics Of Human Genetic Enhancement: Extending The Public Policy Debate, John J. Baumann

Theses and Dissertations

Mammalian one—cell embryos can be genetically altered, implanted into the female's uterus, and subsequently develop into biologically mature organisms in the usual manner. If the resultant adult organisms reproduce, the genetic change may be passed on to future generations. In humans, the procedure is known alternatively as "human genetic engineering" or "human germline gene therapy." Bioethicists distinguish between genetic engineering intended for the prevention or treatment of disease ("treatment germline gene therapy") and genetic engineering intended for non—medical enhancement of certain characteristics ("enhancement germline gene therapy"). Human genetic engineering has the potential to effectively replace deleterious genes such as the …

The Roles Of Several Kinases In Mice Tolerant To Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol, Matthew C. Lee Jan 1999

The Roles Of Several Kinases In Mice Tolerant To Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol, Matthew C. Lee

Theses and Dissertations

It has been suggested that the CB1 G-protein-coupled receptor is internalized following agonist binding and activation of the second messenger pathways. The process of desensitization and resensitization is intimately involved with receptor internalization. Phosphorylation alters tolerance to cannabinoids thus contributing to tolerance. It is proposed that phosphorylation enhances the down-regulation of the CB1 receptor. These findings led us to look at which kinase(s) may be involved in cannabinoid tolerance. We therefore hypothesize that by preventing phosphorylation of the CB1 receptor, we may reverse tolerance. We evaluated our hypothesis by testing the role of several kinases in tolerance: protein kinase A …

Correlation Of Visualized Glucocorticoid Receptor And Apoptosis In Individual Clones Of Nb2 Cells, Devang M. Patel Jan 1999

Correlation Of Visualized Glucocorticoid Receptor And Apoptosis In Individual Clones Of Nb2 Cells, Devang M. Patel

Theses and Dissertations

The Nb2 lymphoma cell line is susceptible to glucocorticoid (GC)-induced apoptosis in the absence of mitogen and this effect is inhibited by the mitogen prolactin (PRL). This process is believed to be mediated by the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and various downstream signals. The purpose of this study was to use the limiting dilution method to isolate subsets of Nb2 clones which expressed either highly enriched amounts of GR or an absence of GR and to relate the amount of GR to the magnitude of GC induced cytolysis. The presence of GR in these clones was determined by immunocytochemistry (ICC) using …

An Evaluation Of The City Of Danville-Pittsylvania County Annexation, Gerald A. Craver Jan 1999

An Evaluation Of The City Of Danville-Pittsylvania County Annexation, Gerald A. Craver

Theses and Dissertations

An insufficient amount of evaluation research has been conducted on Virginia's annexations. This study helps to fill that void by evaluating the Danville - Pittsylvania County annexation. The thesis attempts to determine if the city of Danville benefited from the annexation and if Pittsylvania County was able to recover from the loss that it suffered as a result of the annexation.

In order to evaluate the annexation, data was collected and analyzed for seven research categories: urban services, planning, demographics, community leadership, local government cooperation, economic development, and public finance. In addition, government documents were reviewed to collect information that …

Higher Education And The Social Contract: Achieving Alignment With The Service Mission In The Liberal Arts/Sciences At Urban Universities, Jackie Cook Elston Jan 1999

Higher Education And The Social Contract: Achieving Alignment With The Service Mission In The Liberal Arts/Sciences At Urban Universities, Jackie Cook Elston

Theses and Dissertations

American higher education exists today in an environment of accountability. The public is demanding full participation in addressing the considerable social, health and economic problems facing society. Despite explicit statements of commitment to public service and community outreach however, according to numerous studies conducted over the past twenty years, universities are not articulating this commitment in faculty roles and rewards.

This study advances the discussion of roles and rewards at one particular model of institution — the urban university. The focus is on the behavior and attitudes of academic leaders at these unique institutions to determine the extent to which …

Genetic Algorithm And Tabu Search Approaches To Quantization For Dct-Based Image Compression, Michael Champion Jan 1999

Genetic Algorithm And Tabu Search Approaches To Quantization For Dct-Based Image Compression, Michael Champion

Theses

Today there are several formal and experimental methods for image compression, some of which have grown to be incorporated into the Joint Photographers Experts Group (JPEG) standard. Of course, many compression algorithms are still used only for experimentation mainly due to various performance issues. Lack of speed while compressing or expanding an image, poor compression rate, and poor image quality after expansion are a few of the most popular reasons for skepticism about a particular compression algorithm. This paper discusses current methods used for image compression. It also gives a detailed explanation of the discrete cosine transform (DCT), used by …

Mechanical Properties Of Polystyrene And Polypropylene Based Materials After Exposure To Hydrogen Peroxide, John Torres Jan 1999

Mechanical Properties Of Polystyrene And Polypropylene Based Materials After Exposure To Hydrogen Peroxide, John Torres

Theses

This study addresses a specific problem faced by a company in the food industry, although all food companies face similar issues. In an effort to reduce costs, the pursuit to down-gauge packaging materials is constant. In the case of this study, the primary package of a dairy product is being considered for reduction from the current 57 mil thickness to 52 mils. In the past, as the material was down-gauged from 62 mils, a loss in material strength and an increase in damage were observed. Initial research into the issue by line personnel found that the increase in damage was …

Unnecessary Adversaries At The End Of Life: Mediating End-Of-Life Treatment Disputes To Prevent Erosion Of Physician-Patient Relationships, Robert Gatter

All Faculty Scholarship

Professor Gatter estimates that institutional ethics consultation processes are used to resolve as many as 13,500 end-of-life treatment (EOLT) disputes each year. Despite this sizable case load, the law has largely ignored the method of dispute resolution used to address EOLT disagreements. This article argues that, at the stage when an ethics consultation is requested in an EOLT dispute, mediation is the most appropriate method for attempting to resolve that dispute. This article challenges current wisdom that mediation is inappropriate for addressing disputes between physicians and patients. The challenge is based on four key points. First, EOLT disputes between physicians …
