Relationship Between Pulse Oximetry Measurements And Admission To A Hospital In The Wheezing Pediatric Population, Christine K. Dunnuck

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to assess the usefulness of pulse oximetry measurements as an objective measure of the severity of wheezing in pediatric emergency clients as demonstrated by subsequent admission. An ex-post facto study design with a retrospective chart review was used. Subjects (n=198) ranged in age from one month to 17 years. Consecutive admissions and random sampling of those discharged were used. Hypotheses were: (a) lower initial pulse oximetry measurements would increase the likelihood of admission and (b) younger patients would be admitted with higher pulse oximetry measurements.

Chi-square analysis and one way ANOVA statistical testing demonstrated …

The Experience Of Nurse Practitioners With Peer Support: A Phenomenological Study, Carol J. Prinzo Jan 1999

The Experience Of Nurse Practitioners With Peer Support: A Phenomenological Study, Carol J. Prinzo

Masters Theses

As nurse practitioners move into non traditional roles they sometimes lack a social and professional support. Lack of peer support can cause a feeling of isolation and frustration for advanced practice nurses.

The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to discover the lived experience of nurse practitioners with peer support. Four nurse practitioners described their experiences. These descriptions were analyzed for meaning using the Girogi method.

Four common themes emerged: support throughout the educational process, professional support, support from family and friends and frustration. The description of peer support was unique according to level of experience, practice setting and …

Quality Of Life Of The Hemodialysis Patient, Tammy Bronson Jan 1999

Quality Of Life Of The Hemodialysis Patient, Tammy Bronson

Masters Theses

There are over 250,000 people currently afflicted with end-stage renal disease and the number is rising every year. Although kidney transplant is the treatment of choice, lack of viable organs limits this option. Hemodialysis is the most common treatment modality for end stage renal disease. Quality of care is continuously monitored by physicians, nurses and dietitians, however there is also the need to examine the quality of life of the hemodialysis patient. This study replicated the works of Ferrans and Powers (1993).

Overall quality of life and four sub-scales (health and functioning, social and economic, psychological/spiritual, and family) were evaluated …

Current Clinical Efficacy Of Chloroquine For The Treatment Of Plasmodium Falciparum Infections In Urban Dar Es Salaam, United Republic Of Tanzania, Zul Premji, C. Makwaya, J.N. Minjas

Pathology, East Africa

Reported is the use of a 14-day WHO protocol, which takes into account the clinical, parasitological and haematological responses to antimalarial drugs, to determine the efficacy of chloroquine in the treatment of uncomplicated malaria in young children (n = 200) in urban Dar es Salaam. Chloroquine failure was found in 43% of the children. Of these, 12.5% were considered to be early treatment failures and were given a single dose of sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine. Fever subsided in all children treated with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine and there were no parasitological failures. In addition, children treated with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine because of early treatment failure with chloroquine had …

Modelling The Fisheries Of Lake Manzala, Egypt, Using Parametric And Non-Parametric Statistical Methods, Medhat Mohamed Ahmed Abdelaal

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Much attention has been given to the economic aspects of the fisheries in Egypt, while building a statistical or mathematical model for fish production has received little attention. This study is devoted to a comprehensive assessment of Lake Manzala fisheries; past, present and future. Lake Manzala is one of the main fisheries resources in Egypt, and there is evidence that the fisheries have been over-exploited in recent years. The study objectives were to determine the factors that affect fish catches by individual vessels, to compare between parametric and non-parametric models of the fish catches, and to produce a mathematical model …

Post-Natal Depression In First Time Fatherhood, Emma Victoria Worwood Jan 1999

Post-Natal Depression In First Time Fatherhood, Emma Victoria Worwood

School of Psychology Theses

It is gradually becoming acknowledged that fathers do suffer from post-natal depression, but very little is known about their experience or how many fathers are actually affected. The factors that may increase a father's susceptibility to post-natal depression, or those that might indeed protect him, have also been given little consideration in research to date. This study examined the prevalence and comorbidity of post-natal depression in 100 first time parents, using the Edinburgh Post-natal Depression Scale (EPDS). The psychological factors of infant temperament, perception of own parenting and social support were investigated in a smaller sample of 30 fathers subsequently …

Poor Performance Of Health And Population Welfare Programmes In Sindh: Case Studies In Governance Failure, Mehtab S. Karim, Shehla Zaidi Jan 1999

Poor Performance Of Health And Population Welfare Programmes In Sindh: Case Studies In Governance Failure, Mehtab S. Karim, Shehla Zaidi

Community Health Sciences

Over the past few years, the issue of what is meant by “good governance” has generated increasing attention and debate both at the national and international level [Streeten (1997)]. The role of state and how that role is to be exercised is appearing high on the agenda of politicians, policy-makers and academicians in the developing world. Governance has been defined by the World Bank as “the manner in which power is exercised in the management of the country’s economic and social resources” [World Bank (1994)]. The somewhat narrow scope of this definition has been broadened in recent years to “the …

Pre-Performance Routines And Rhythm: A Comparative Study, Blake Wade Miller Jan 1999

Pre-Performance Routines And Rhythm: A Comparative Study, Blake Wade Miller

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The present study was designed to investigate the effects of pre-performance routine rhythm on novel motor task success. At the center of the study was the comparison of differing characteristics of two theories of motor control: the dynamical systems theory and the schema theory. It was hypothesized that an even pre-performance routine rhythm would be more advantageous to task success than an uneven preperformance routine rhythm, regardless of the rhythmic characteristic of the task. The results concluded the contrary to be more accurate, and indicated that task success was more likely to occur when the pre-performance routine rhythm was congruent …

Development Of The Iowa Communications Network And Current Patterns Of Use, Stacey Lang Jan 1999

Development Of The Iowa Communications Network And Current Patterns Of Use, Stacey Lang

Graduate Research Papers

During the middle 1980s there were several issues which faced the state. Declining enrollments, teacher shortages, funding issues, transportation issues and the poor economy were problems facing all school administrators, especially the administrator of the rural school district. Along with these issues, the state department of public instruction had also placed additional mandates on schools. There was a need to equalize the course offerings and available resources of the state's 80% rural population. Distance learning projects were becoming part of the Iowa countryside, however, legislators saw the need to focus in one direction, thus the inception of the Iowa Communications …

Beyond Black And White: Selected Writings By Asian Americans Within The Critical Race Theory Movement Perspective., Harvey Gee Jan 1999

Beyond Black And White: Selected Writings By Asian Americans Within The Critical Race Theory Movement Perspective., Harvey Gee

St. Mary's Law Journal

A new generation of progressive intellectuals has evolved, attempting to transform the manner in which law, race, and racial power are understood and discussed in America. The latter half of the twentieth century proved to be a time of profound demographic changes. Racial and political reform policies of the post-modern Civil Rights Movement failed to fully respond to these dramatic social changes. A theory was created to address social racism because the “color-blind” model posited by the Supreme Court of the United States perpetuated racism by supporting the existing hierarchy. Critical Race Theory attempts to tackle these dramatic social changes …

Splitting The Atom Or Splitting Hairs - The Hate Crimes Prevention Act Of 1999 Note., Andrew M. Gilbert, Eric D. Marchand

St. Mary's Law Journal

Problems of bias-motivated violence plague our nation and threaten to erase the progress made during the civil rights era. Recent statistical surveys conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) indicate the number of hate crimes has generally increased over the past few years. In 1996, over 11,000 individuals were victims of hate crimes—five percent more than reported the previous year. Hate crimes are not only injurious to the individual victim, but also fracture surrounding communities and create disharmony among citizens. As a result, some states implemented legislation in the 1980s to deter hate-motived crimes and a few states have …

Argument On Leisure And Spirituality: How Can The Line From The 46th Psalm, “Have Leisure And Know That I Am God,” Be Understood?, Tomoe Kitajima

Graduate Research Papers

The focus of the present study is to describe the relationship between leisure and spirituality in the process of reviewing related literature and speculating about the quote from the 46th Psalm, "Have leisure and know that I am God," using a philosophical method (an argument style specifically). Although the argument will be based on a line of Psalm from the Old Testament, the intention of this argument is not to critique or interpret the tradition of Biblical thoughts. This will entail looking at four key points: 1) mystical and transcendental experiences; 2) the contrast between the classic Greek concept of …
