Health-Seeking Behaviors Of Ethiopian Women In The United States: A Pilot Qualitative Study, Hanna Belay, Felicia Leammuda, Ahmed Ugbad, Beamlak Kebede May 2026

Health-Seeking Behaviors Of Ethiopian Women In The United States: A Pilot Qualitative Study, Hanna Belay, Felicia Leammuda, Ahmed Ugbad, Beamlak Kebede

InnovateHER Meeting 2026

This study explores how Ethiopian immigrant women understand health and navigate healthcare in the United States. Using qualitative interviews with two participants, findings show that health is viewed holistically, with strong reliance on traditional remedies. Participants engage with the U.S. healthcare system selectively, often seeking care only when symptoms become severe. Barriers such as system complexity, fear, and time delays influence healthcare decisions.

When Faced With Persistent Crying, Will Adults Follow The Advice To Take A Break?, Lauren J. Duplessis, Remington K. Asta, Benjamin N. Witts

InnovateHER Meeting 2026

Inconsolable crying in early infancy can have detrimental effects on caregiver mental health, the caregiver-infant relationship, and infant safety. Professionals often advise caregivers to walk away and take a break. This study used n-of-1 methodology to examine how frequently undergraduate students will follow this advice when tasked with calming a simulated inconsolable infant. Results are mixed, but suggest active training prior to the baby’s arrival might yield promising outcomes

Hip Stretching Protocol's Impact On Female Ice Hockey Players, Cienna Clark May 2026

Hip Stretching Protocol's Impact On Female Ice Hockey Players, Cienna Clark

InnovateHER Meeting 2026

Women’s ice hockey participation continues to grow as do injury rates among these players. However, female ice hockey players often show different injuries than male players. This is largely due to the lack of checking in women’s hockey, which means the injuries that tend to be seen are more about overuse injuries and less catastrophic injuries. Female injuries also tend to be more in their hips, which begs the question: what would happen if hips were stretched on a regular basis? Would these injuries subside, or at least improve?

The Correlation Between Age, Perceived Success, And Prospective Time Judgements In Adolescence, Anna Parker May 2026

The Correlation Between Age, Perceived Success, And Prospective Time Judgements In Adolescence, Anna Parker

InnovateHER Meeting 2026

The expressions “a watched pot never boils” or “time flies when you’re having fun” are common expressions in day-to-day life, but the phenomenon of time perception is application in aspects all throughout life, including school years. The purpose of this study is to determine what effect, if any, the variables of age and success have on a younger population’s perception of time by examining the correlation between time judgements, feelings of success, and age. My hypotheses include that an increase in age and higher success scores will lead to greater accuracy, and that an increase in age and higher success …

Empowering Women: Understanding Neurological Changes In The Aging Brain, Joy Mckenzie May 2026

Empowering Women: Understanding Neurological Changes In The Aging Brain, Joy Mckenzie

InnovateHER Meeting 2026

Women tend to have more neurological changes than men as they age starting in their mid-30s (Mosconi, 2024). While aging is a natural process, the neurological changes can impact a woman’s personal and professional quality of life (Faubion et al., 2023; Gravini, 2023). For years, women’s neurological symptoms have been ignored by being told that their experiences are normal and just a part of life (Haver, 2025). That narrative is starting to shift with the increased awareness of changes specific to women. There are resources to assess cognitive changes such as memory, processing speed, and word finding and strategies to …

A pre–post survey design revealed increased knowledge, greater guideline awareness, and heightened willingness to prescribe HRT following a 10–15 minute educational module.

Unearthing Misconceptions And Opinions In An Established Pollinator Project, Stella Holstrom May 2026

Unearthing Misconceptions And Opinions In An Established Pollinator Project, Stella Holstrom

InnovateHER Meeting 2026

The Sartell High School has 13 acres of pollinator fields that were cultivated within the last 3 years. While the main part of the garden has signage, it is far from the more visible parts of the gardens. Over the last three years, there has been some negative feedback about the gardens, much of which seems to come from a place of ignorance by the public. A literature review about pollinator project and their benefits establishes that most research has surround bees or plants, but not usually both or the public reaction to pollinator gardens. My hypothesis was that most …

Elmorsi, Tuyen Phan, Indrajit Chaudhury, Tom Corbiere, Lindsey B. Collins, Elizabeth B. Hirsch, Benjamin A. Weinberg, Jennifer M. Johnson, Emmanuel S. Antonarakis, Emil Lou, R. Stephanie Huang

Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery Faculty Papers

The intratumoral microbiome is increasingly recognized as a regulator of cancer biology, yet sex-specific patterns and their relevance to cancer disparities remain poorly understood. We perform a multi-kingdom analysis of more than 5,000 tumors from seven datasets to identify sex-differential microbial taxa across aerodigestive and gastrointestinal cancers. We identify and validate 22 taxa with consistent sex-biased abundance, including in real-world cohort. These microbes show cancer-type- and microbe-specific associations with tumor transcriptomes, oncogenic pathways, and immune cell infiltration. Female-enriched microbes are linked to increased estrogen signaling and interferon responses, whereas male-enriched taxa show opposing patterns. In gastric cancer, intratumoral Epstein-Barr virus …

Testing The Limits Of The Purse: Nih Funding And President Trump's Unprecedented Strategy Of Presidential Impoundment, Amanda Rose Masse May 2026

Testing The Limits Of The Purse: Nih Funding And President Trump's Unprecedented Strategy Of Presidential Impoundment, Amanda Rose Masse

Washington Semester Program

Congress and presidents have clashed over yearly funding awarded to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) throughout the existence of the government agency. Although presidents have routinely requested funding cuts in their annual budget proposals, Congress has steadily increased the amount of congressionally directed funding NIH receives yearly. Outlined in the Constitution, Congress holds the “power of the purse”; therefore, the legislative body provides federal funding for NIH and other executive departments.1 However, presidents have repeatedly attempted to rescind funds to NIH without congressional approval through impoundment. President Donald Trump was the most recent U.S. president to do so. His …

Functional And Structural Lesion Network Mapping: Insights Into Acquired Brain Injury And Insomnia, Kathleen Erekson Rugh May 2026

Functional And Structural Lesion Network Mapping: Insights Into Acquired Brain Injury And Insomnia, Kathleen Erekson Rugh

Theses and Dissertations

Insomnia disorder is the most reported sleep disorder and can negatively affect daily functioning. Acquired brain injuries can lead to insomnia disorder. Limited research has explored a causal link between brain networks and insomnia symptoms in this population. This study replicated a lesion network mapping methodology of an insomnia study (Helquist et al., 2024) and extended it to examine structural networks linked to insomnia symptoms in individuals with acquired brain injuries. Traced lesions (N =44) were used as seed regions to compare against normative functional and structural network data. For functional analyses, we used resting state fMRI scans from a …

Baseline Moderators Of A Transdiagnostic Adolescent Sleep And Circadian Health Intervention's Effectiveness At Improving Circadian Sleep Health: A Pilot Investigation, Jamon M. Jex

Theses and Dissertations

The current study examined whether baseline demographic and clinical characteristics moderate the effectiveness of the Transdiagnostic Sleep and Circadian (TSC) intervention in improving adolescent circadian sleep health. Using an integrative data analysis approach, data from three independent adolescent samples (N = 134; ages 10-18) were pooled to evaluate changes across multidimensional sleep outcomes defined by the RU-SATED model of sleep, including regularity, satisfaction, alertness, timing, efficiency, and duration. Linear mixed-effects models were used to assess pre-to-post intervention changes and test moderation by age, sex, family income, and clinical status. Results indicated significant improvements in sleep satisfaction following TSC, with greater …

Intimacy Needs Across Different Relationship Types: The Role Of Gender And Attachment Style, Raymond P. Voss Jr., Annalise Harrison, Dylan Sczerbowicz, Michelle Drouin

Health Services and Informatics Research

In this study, we examined five different intimacy needs (i.e., emotional, social, sexual, intellectual, and recreational) across several types of modern-day romantic relationships (i.e., committed, friends with benefits, one-night-stands, and polyamorous) among undergraduates (N = 240). Overall, individuals rated emotional needs as most important and social needs as least important to a fulfilling partnership. Additionally, they expected committed partners to meet 81% of their total intimacy needs but other types of partners to meet far fewer (i.e., one-night stands = 20%, friends with benefits = 35%, polyamorous = 50%). Men and women rated intimacy needs similarly across most relationship …

Introducing The Qualitative Software Article Data Analysis Checklist (Qs-Adac), Sheryl L. Chatfield

The Qualitative Report

Authors and researchers have many alternatives to consider when seeking reporting guidance or assessing the thoroughness of reporting in published qualitative research articles.  However, widely used reporting guidance and checklist processes such as CASP, COREQ, SRQR, and the American Psychological Association JARS-Qual have few prompts related to researcher use of Qualitative Data Analysis Software (QDAS) for data preparation, processing, or analysis. The purpose of this paper is to describe the development of the Qualitative Software Article Data Analysis Checklist (QS-ADAC), a tool developed to provide authors with reporting guidance and to provide students with a consistent process for examining details …
