Exact Test For Investigation Of Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium, Bahar Çitak, Tahsi̇n Kesi̇ci̇ Jan 1999

Exact Test For Investigation Of Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium, Bahar Çitak, Tahsi̇n Kesi̇ci̇

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The use of exact and \chi^2 goodness-of-fit tests to control the hypothesis that a sample represents the population in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium are explained and compared with each other. These tests were applied for the loci with two, three and four alleles. The reliability of these tests depends on the sample size. The results showed that the exact and \chi^2 goodness-of-fit tests provided almost the same results if the sample size is considerably large. The exact test is, however, more reliable than the \chi^2 goodness-of-fit test when the sample size is small.

Comparative Genomic Hybridization (Cgh) Incancer Research, İbrahi̇m Keser Jan 1999

Comparative Genomic Hybridization (Cgh) Incancer Research, İbrahi̇m Keser

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Cancer is a multifactorial and multistep process. Conventional cytogenetics has become a major working field in cancer research. Chromosome rearrangements are recognized as critical in the pathogenesis of human cancer. Molecular biology and molecular cytogenetics technology have increased our ability to identify genetic alterations in cancer cells. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR), fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), oligonucleotide-primed in situ DNA synthesis (PRINS) are the most common molecular cytogenetic procedures in cancer research but they have limits with precise localization in their principles in cancer researching. However, comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) is a powerful molecular cytogenetic technique which allows the analysis …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Biological damage mediated by reactive oxygen species has been increasingly recognized in aging phenomena in recent decades. The increase in catecholamine metabolism is yet another physiological change in aging, predisposing the organism to supranormal hydrogen peroxide produc-tion as a by-product. This study was undertaken to investigate the alterations in oxidant- antioxidant status in rat cardiac tissue during aging. The effects of acute administration of monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors on this status were also investigated to find possible preventive strategies in conjugate aging. MAO activities, malondialdehyde MDA and diene conjugate levels as well as superoxide dismutase and catalase activities were determined …

Spontaneous Micronuclei In Cytokinesis-Blocked Bone Marrow And Peripheral Blood Iymphocytes Of Cml Patients, Di̇lek Koç Başer, Asuman Sunguroğlu, Işik Bökesoy, Akin Uysal Jan 1999

Spontaneous Micronuclei In Cytokinesis-Blocked Bone Marrow And Peripheral Blood Iymphocytes Of Cml Patients, Di̇lek Koç Başer, Asuman Sunguroğlu, Işik Bökesoy, Akin Uysal

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Some genetic diseases may have increased cellular instability. Since chronic myloid leukemia (CML) has a genetic base, we aimed to seek the genetic instability of patients by micronucleus analysis, a mutation screening test which was applied by cytokinesis-blocked (CB) method. In this study, 10 CML patients at diagnosis, were analysed for their micronuclei (MN) frequencies. The values were evaluated in different culture conditions of blood and bone marrow cells. The results of CML patients are compared with control' MN values obtained by peripheral blood cultures induced with PHA. Between bone marrow and peripheral blood cultures MN values with or without …

Nosocomial Uropathogens And Their Antibiotic Susceptibilities In A Turkish Military Hospital: A Prospective And Microbiological Study, Mehmet Ali̇ Saraçli, Mehmet Baysallar, Hüseyi̇n Gün

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

In this prospective study, we found that 21.80% (29/133) of nosocomial urinary tract infections (NUTis) were caused by Escherichia coli, 12.78% (17/133) by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and 10.53% (14/133) by Klebsiella pneumoniae whereas 16.54% (22/133) were caused by coagulase negative staphylococci. The highest susceptibility rate was determined with imipenem among gram negatives (21/28 for non-fermentatives and 65/66 for others); and with vancomycin (30/30) and pristinamycin (29/30) among gram positives. On the other hand, the lowest susceptibilities were to amoxicilin (7/66), amoxicilin clavulonat (18/66) and cotrimoxazole (27/66) among gram negatives other than non-fermentatives. All of the non-fermentative gram negative isolates were resistant …

Apomictic Development In Tetraploid Red Clover ( Trifolium Pratensel.), Gönül Algan, H. Nurhan Bakar

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

This study was carried out in order to determine to what extent apomictic development would affect seed formation in the natural tetraploid red clover variety E2. Some Taracaxum-type and lxeris-type development, was determined. It was concluded that embryo sac development did not occur through aposporous development whereas it could occur through diplosporous devel-opment.

Monitoring The Effects Of Indoor Pollution Using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Rachel Farrell Jan 1999

Monitoring The Effects Of Indoor Pollution Using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Rachel Farrell

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy {FTIR) was used to develop an effective way to monitor indoor pollution and to observe the effects of such indoor pollution under various conditions of the ventilation system of McCollum Science Hall of the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, Iowa. This was done by monitoring the absorbance of acetone as it evaporated over time, and the data were used to create concentration vs. time plots. Several parameters from these plots were used to judge the ventilation system, with some general conclusions including that having the system on reduces peak time and end time. Also, the …

‘‘Going Where The Questions Are’’: Using Media To Maintain Personalized Contact In Reference Service In Medium-Sized Academic Libraries, Sarah Brick Archer, Melissa Cast-Brede Jan 1999

‘‘Going Where The Questions Are’’: Using Media To Maintain Personalized Contact In Reference Service In Medium-Sized Academic Libraries, Sarah Brick Archer, Melissa Cast-Brede

Criss Library Faculty Publications

Different approaches to reference service have been added over the years, but the basic premise of the service has not changed–the desire to assist and educate users in locating information. As new technologies are added, such as desktop conferencing and web access, it is important that the personalized contact which is the heart of reference service be preserved. The human touch in the reference process is very important to the success of the reference transaction. Media can be useful in assisting reference librarians in ‘‘Going Where the Questions Are’’ while still maintaining the personal element in creating real-time reference transactions …

Comparing Alternative Products In The Provision Of Emergency Contraception, John P. Skibiak, Yusuf Ahmed, M. Ketata Jan 1999

Comparing Alternative Products In The Provision Of Emergency Contraception, John P. Skibiak, Yusuf Ahmed, M. Ketata

Reproductive Health

This report is the third in a series of summaries produced in connection with the operations research project “Enhancing Access to Family Planning Services through the Introduction of Emergency Contraception.” Launched in September 1997, the project explores the many issues surrounding the introduction and delivery of emergency contraception services in a developing country context. The study compares the introduction of two different emergency contraception pills—the combined oral contraceptive PC-4, introduced in Zambia in 1997, and the progestin-only contraceptive Postinor-2, introduced by this study in the following year. Client histories showed only minor differences in the attitudes of emergency contraception users …

Postabortion Care: Lessons From Operations Research, Dale Huntington, Nancy J. Piet-Pelon Jan 1999

Postabortion Care: Lessons From Operations Research, Dale Huntington, Nancy J. Piet-Pelon

Reproductive Health

This book focuses on one central but until now intransigent aspect of women’s health: How to reduce the toll of death and morbidity associated with unsafe abortion. For the first time in the history of international decision-making, Cairo established a consensus on abortion. This was reaffirmed in the 1999 United Nations General Assembly statement. Where abortion is illegal, many women use herbal remedies, take modern drugs in unsupervised ways, attempt to physically self-induce, or seek help from abortion providers working outside the law. Where abortion is illegal, women are exposed to painful, dangerous procedures and many fall so sick that …
