Water Quality Relationships To Concentrations Of Pfiesteria-Like Organisms In Virginia Estuaries For 1998, Everett P. Weber, Harold G. Marshall Jan 1999

Water Quality Relationships To Concentrations Of Pfiesteria-Like Organisms In Virginia Estuaries For 1998, Everett P. Weber, Harold G. Marshall

Virginia Journal of Science

A series of statistical analyses were performed to identify the relationship between abundance of dinoflagellates grouped as Pfiesteria-like organisms and a set of 25 water quality variables from May through October of 1998 at 41 estuarine locations. Although regions were identified in relation to seasonal density of cells present, there were no strong relationships to specific water quality variables. Factors that may have influenced these results included: a) several species were included in the group analyzed and this composite did not respond as a unit to changing environmental conditions; b) cell concentrations were low and there were a large …

Rights Discourse And Neonatal Euthanasia, Carl Schneider Jan 1999

Rights Discourse And Neonatal Euthanasia, Carl Schneider

Book Chapters

At the heart of our difficulty in approaching neonatal euthanasia lie the intractable questions it raises: What is human life? When is death preferable to life? What do parents owe their children? What does society owe the suffering? Those moral questions could hardly be more perplexing, yet they are further complicated when they must be resolved not informally and case by case, but through generally applicable social rules. This is so for numerous reasons. For instance, the wide range of deeply held opinions about neonatal euthanasia makes rules hard to formulate, and the wide range of factual situations in which …

The Association Of Fluid Intake With Total Natural-Cause Mortality, Coronary Heart Disease And Fatal Stroke, Jacqueline Chung Lun Chan Jan 1999

The Association Of Fluid Intake With Total Natural-Cause Mortality, Coronary Heart Disease And Fatal Stroke, Jacqueline Chung Lun Chan

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Hypohydration may be more widespread than realized since it does not always arouse a sense of thirst. When thirst is felt, it is often ignored, or satisfied before euhydration is achieved. There is growing evidence indicating that hypohydration contributes to acute and chronic illnesses, and to rheological factors associated with coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke. Therefore the relationship of fluid intake with risk of total natural-cause mortality, CHD and stroke death was examined using data on 34,192 white, non-Hispanic participants in the Adventist Health Study.

Among the 27,342 reporting no CHD, stroke or diabetes at baseline, during six years …

Body Weight And Mortality Among Adults Who Never Smoked, Pramil N. Singh Jan 1999

Body Weight And Mortality Among Adults Who Never Smoked, Pramil N. Singh

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Most prospective studies identify an increased mortality risk for adults of high body mass index (> 27 kg/m2) that is commonly attributed to the effects of excess body fat, and also identify an increased mortality risk for adults of low body mass index (< 21 kg/m2), an association that, if causal among healthy adults, is without adequate pathophysiologic support.

In this dissertation, I have conducted three studies that continue the investigation of adiposity in relation to mortality among never-smoking adults of the California Seventh-day Adventist population. Among never-smoking adults of the Adventist Mortality Study (1960-1985), the relation between …

Regulation Of Stability Of Marketed Pharmaceuticals, Brahmaiah Kommanaboyina

Open Access Master's Theses

The United States Pharmacopeia I National Formulary (USP/NF) sets the standards and maintains monographs for the evaluation of various dosage forms, especially during the storage and distribution channels. This document is compiled with the critical review of the stability testing of pharmaceutical products. In particular, it considers the progress toward globalization and harmonization, attention being directed to monitoring stability in the distribution channels. It is also focussed on the implications of Mean Kinetic Tempearature (MKT) concept and the effect of temperature spikes on MKT values, thus effecting the stability of drug products. The assignment of conformance period to the tablets …

Marine Resource Management On Anguilla: The Human Dimension, William R. Stevenson Jr. Jan 1999

Marine Resource Management On Anguilla: The Human Dimension, William R. Stevenson Jr.

Open Access Master's Theses

This study examined the perception of local stakeholders on the island of Anguilla in regards to the health, current management, and future management of their marine resources. Little quantitative data is available for any of Anguilla's marine resources specifically lobster and reef fish populations or rates of harvest. Anecdotal reports describe these resources as in decline. A descriptive survey was used to gather information on the stakeholder's perception of the health, the current management, and future management of their marine resources. A cornerstone of the study was that a polarization among stakeholder groups would emerge. This divergence of opinion did …

A Study Of Academic Procrastination In College Students, Janee K. Mcfadden Jan 1999

A Study Of Academic Procrastination In College Students, Janee K. Mcfadden

Open Access Master's Theses

As competition in the work force steadily increases, higher education in the twentieth and twenty-first century is of extreme importance. Academic success entails persistence as well as effective work habits. Despite the undeniable importance of a strong, successful college education, there is one recurring behavior directly related to one's college experience and success that has been consistently overlooked--the behavior termed procrastination. It is estimated that between 75 to 95 percent of all college students engage in academic procrastination. It is this same common behavior that may severely impact one's potential for success in college and subsequently in future endeavors.

Federal Transfer Taxation And The Role Of State Law: Does The Marital Deduction Strike The Proper Balance?, Mitchell M. Gans Jan 1999

Federal Transfer Taxation And The Role Of State Law: Does The Marital Deduction Strike The Proper Balance?, Mitchell M. Gans

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

The federal transfer-tax system often makes state law a critical determinant. This is a necessary feature of a system that taxes the transfer of property, a concept that ordinarily derives its meaning from state law. As a matter of federal tax policy, however, it is important that the system neither overemphasize nor under emphasize state law. Part I undertakes a consideration of the role of state law in the transfer-tax system and the negative consequences that occur where the tax law fails to strike the proper balance.

Part II then focuses on the marital deduction, applying the framework developed in …
