The Nature And Structure Of Impediments To Edi Adoption And Integration: A Survey Of Small- And Medium-Sized Enterprises, Deepak Khazanchi

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

Electronic data interchange (EDI) is a key enabling component of business-to-business electronic commerce. As firms adopt and integrate advanced information technologies such as EDI, it is important to understand the nature of challenges faced by them. This becomes especially important given the fact that nearly 99.7% of all businesses in the US can be classified as small- to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). As costs and risks associated with implementing new information technologies decrease, these firms will surely need to focus their attention on managing impediments associated with new technology implementation and learn from the failures or successes of their peer. Consequently, …

Inhibition Of Cpla2-Mediated Arachidonic Acid Release By Cyclic Amp Defines A Negative Feedback Loop For P2y-Receptor Activation In Mdck-D1 Cells, Mingzhao Xing, Steven Post, Rennolds S. Ostrom, Michael Samardzija, Paul A. Insel Jan 1999

Inhibition Of Cpla2-Mediated Arachidonic Acid Release By Cyclic Amp Defines A Negative Feedback Loop For P2y-Receptor Activation In Mdck-D1 Cells, Mingzhao Xing, Steven Post, Rennolds S. Ostrom, Michael Samardzija, Paul A. Insel

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

In Madin-Darby canine kidney D1cells extracellular nucleotides activate P2Y receptors that couple to several signal transduction pathways, including stimulation of multiple phospholipases and adenylyl cyclase. For one class of P2Y receptors, P2Y2 receptors, this stimulation of adenylyl cyclase and increase in cAMP occurs via the conversion of phospholipase A2 (PLA2)-generated arachidonic acid (AA) to prostaglandins (e.g. PGE2). These prostaglandins then stimulate adenylyl cyclase activity, presumably via activation of prostanoid receptors. In the current study we show that agents that increase cellular cAMP levels (including PGE2, forskolin, and the β-adrenergic agonist isoproterenol) can inhibit P2Y receptor-promoted AA release. The protein kinase …

Corporate Governance Reform In Russia: The Effectiveness Of The 1996 Russian Company Law, Gregory Wolk Jan 1999

Corporate Governance Reform In Russia: The Effectiveness Of The 1996 Russian Company Law, Gregory Wolk

Washington International Law Journal

During Post-Soviet privatization, widespread abuses of power in Russian corporations contributed to the economic malaise in that country. These abuses are attributed to the domination of firms by senior management. In January 1996, the Russian Company Law went into effect with very strong protections for minority shareholders as a means to curb these abuses. This Comment analyzes the effectiveness of the Russian Company Law in this regard over the past three years. It concludes that the law has been moderately successful given the extremely hostile conditions at the time of enactment, and thus, it is a model for other transitional …

Christian Science, Rational Choice, And Alternative World Views, Peggy Desautels Jan 1999

Christian Science, Rational Choice, And Alternative World Views, Peggy Desautels

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Book abstract: A chief aim of this resource is to rekindle interest in seeing health care not solely as a set of practices so problematic as to require ethical analysis by philosophers and other scholars, but as a field whose scrutiny is richly rewarding for the traditional concerns of philosophy.

Chapter abstract: The health-related choices made by Christian Scientists are often criticized as being irrational. It is difficult for those who turn to medical means for healing to understand how Christian Scientists can rationally justify avoiding those medical treatments known to be effective. What is especially confusing to the observer …

Praying For A Cure: When Medical And Religious Practices Conflict, Peggy Desautels, Margaret P. Battin, Larry May Jan 1999

Praying For A Cure: When Medical And Religious Practices Conflict, Peggy Desautels, Margaret P. Battin, Larry May

Philosophy Faculty Publications

When the children of Christian Scientists die from a treatable illness, are their parents guilty of murder for withholding that treatment? How should the rights of children, the authority of the medical community, and religious freedom be balanced? Is it possible for those adhering to a medical model of health and disease and for those adhering to the Christian Science model to enter into a meaningful dialogue, or are the two models incommensurable? DesAutels, Battin, and May engage in a lucid and candid debate of the issues of who is ultimately responsible for deciding these questions and how to accommodate …

A Revision Of The Spiritual Well-Being Scale, Peter D. Endyke Jan 1999

A Revision Of The Spiritual Well-Being Scale, Peter D. Endyke

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Research results indicated the Spiritual Well-being Scale, developed by Ellison and Paloutzian (Paloutzian & Ellison, 1982; Ellison, 1983) suffered from ceiling effects (Ledbetter, et al, 1991). This suggested the Spiritual Well-being Scale might not adequately measure the construct of spiritual well-being, which has implications for the usefulness of the instrument. The purpose of this study was to show that spiritual disciplines are an essential part of spiritual health. Thus, the inclusion of aspects of the spiritual disciplines in the Spiritual Well-being Scale would: 1) reduce the ceiling effects of the scale, 2) increase the variability of the scale, and 3) …

Risk Of Helicobacter Pylori Infection Among Long-Term Residents In Developing Countries, Sylvia I. Becker, Roger D. Smalligan, John D. Frame, Harry Kleanthous, Timothy J. Tibbitts, Thomas P. Monath, Kenneth C. Hyams Jan 1999

Risk Of Helicobacter Pylori Infection Among Long-Term Residents In Developing Countries, Sylvia I. Becker, Roger D. Smalligan, John D. Frame, Harry Kleanthous, Timothy J. Tibbitts, Thomas P. Monath, Kenneth C. Hyams

UAB Huntsville Articles

The seroprevalence and incidence of Helicobacter pylori infection were determined among 312 North American missionaries who were serving in developing countries between 1967 and 1984. The majority (81%) resided in sub-Saharan Africa. When initially evaluated, the missionaries had a mean age of 40 years, 65% were female, and all were of white race/ethnicity. An ELISA showed that the initial prevalence of IgG antibody to H. pylori was 17%. After a mean of 7.4 years of service (1917 person-years of exposure), 37 (14%) of 259 initially seronegative subjects seroconverted to anti-H. pylori, giving an annual incidence of 1.9%. These data indicate …

Expectation And Satisfaction Of Freshmen And Seniors In Higher Education, Reuban Beryrl Rodriguez Jan 1999

Expectation And Satisfaction Of Freshmen And Seniors In Higher Education, Reuban Beryrl Rodriguez

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the expectation, satisfaction and performance gap levels between selected freshman and seniors as measured by the selected SSI scales. The problem was to determine if expectation, satisfaction, and performance gap levels differed between freshman and seniors in 1995 and freshman and seniors in 1998 based on class level, gender and age. The study examined four selected scales from the twelve scales derived from the Student Satisfaction Inventory (SSI): Campus Climate, Campus Life, Campus Support Services, and Instruction Effectiveness. Respondents rated all items on a 7-point Likert scale with respect to their expectations …

Combating Overpopulation : A Study Of The Population Policies Of China And India, Ariam J. Ferro Jan 1999

Combating Overpopulation : A Study Of The Population Policies Of China And India, Ariam J. Ferro

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

With the world population now at 6 billion, the topic of overpopulation is becoming increasingly important. The planet cannot absorb an infinite number of humans, and steps need to be taken to combat unchecked growth. The thesis begins with a discussion of the problems currently manifesting themselves, including land degradation, water supply loss, farmland appropriation for living space, overfishing, and unequal food distribution. The thesis considers the population policy of China, long criticized by the West for its unusual harshness. In studying its history, though, it can be seen why the Chinese government felt radical steps were necessary. India's policy …

Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me: The Relationship Between Gay Men Living With Hiv And Their Physicians (Immune Deficiency), Adele Parkinson-Heyes Jan 1999

Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me: The Relationship Between Gay Men Living With Hiv And Their Physicians (Immune Deficiency), Adele Parkinson-Heyes

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

In this thesis I examine the doctor-client relationship from the perspective of gay men living with HIV. I asked six gay men living with HIV the following open-ended question “Could you tell me about the relationship you have with your physician?” during in-depth interviews. I used narrative analysis to interpret the verbatim transcriptions of each interview. In the findings section I present each man’s story in his own words supplemented with my interpretative comments. The findings revealed that gay men living with HIV had both positive and negative experiences in their relationships with physicians. I identified two contrasting themes: connection …
