Credibility Calculations Using Analysis Of Variance Computer Routines, Dennis H. Tolley, Michael D. Nielsen, Robert Bachler Jan 1999

Credibility Calculations Using Analysis Of Variance Computer Routines, Dennis H. Tolley, Michael D. Nielsen, Robert Bachler

Journal of Actuarial Practice (1993–2006)

In this paper we present a method of calculating Buhlmann-Straub credibility factors using standard statistical techniques developed for the analysis of variance. Emphasis is placed on using readily available statistical packages such as SAS and SPSS. Additionally many other computational tools such as EXCEL can be programmed to make such calculations. An example and some sample SAS programs are provided.

A Fuzzy Approach To Grouping By Policyholder Age In General Insurance, Richard J. Verrall, Yakoub H. Yakoubov Jan 1999

A Fuzzy Approach To Grouping By Policyholder Age In General Insurance, Richard J. Verrall, Yakoub H. Yakoubov

Journal of Actuarial Practice (1993–2006)

In general insurance, policyholder age is often treated as a factor with the number of levels requiring that the individual ages of the policyholders be grouped. Although the groups are usually defined by the existing underwriting structure, it should be investigated as part of any premium rating exercise that uses a model to assess past claims experience. It is possible that an incorrect grouping by policyholder age could bias the results of the risk premium estimation. On the other hand, it may not be computationally feasible to use separate ages in the premium model, making some form of grouping necessary. …

Multilife Premium Calculation With Dependent Future Lifetimes, Michel Denuit, Anne Cornet Jan 1999

Multilife Premium Calculation With Dependent Future Lifetimes, Michel Denuit, Anne Cornet

Journal of Actuarial Practice (1993–2006)

Actuaries traditionally have calculated multi-life (joint life) premiums by assuming the independence of the future lifetimes of insured persons. Recent studies, however, demonstrate dependence of the future lifetimes of couples (such as husbands and wives). This dependence materially affects the values of multi-life annuities and insurances. Using the Frechet-Hoeffding bounds and Norberg's Markov model, we determine the effect of this dependence in lifetimes on the actuarial present values of a widow's pension benefit.

Carvm And Naic Actuarial Guidelines 33 & 34, Keith P. Sharp Jan 1999

Carvm And Naic Actuarial Guidelines 33 & 34, Keith P. Sharp

Journal of Actuarial Practice (1993–2006)

Annuity valuation under the NAIC Standard Valuation Law is determined according to methods different from those methods used for life insurance. The CARVM assumption of efficient policyholder selection is clarified under NAIC Actuarial Guidelines 33 and 34 to allow for non-elective (e.g., death) benefits. In particular, Actuarial Guideline 34 is oriented toward variable annuities and prescribes methods to be used in the presence of a minimum guaranteed death benefit. In this paper these methods are examined and illustrated with examples.

Q: Why Is This Course Different From All Other Courses? A: Maybe It's Not, Louise A. Halper

Seattle University Law Review

The authors’ claim is to a unique recognition of (1) “the interplay of common law, statutory and constitutional regimes,”(2) “the growing significance of non-land forms of property,” (3) “the emergence of environmental values,” and (4) “the central importance of public policy analysis to resolution of complex social problems.” This is certainly an approach that can benefit the first-year Property teacher whose course is set in a semester that may also contain courses focusing on positive law, like Civil Procedure, Administrative Law, Constitutional Law, or Criminal Procedure, as mine does.

Genetic Test Results And The Duty To Disclose: Can Medical Researchers Control Liability?, Richard L. Furman, Jr. Jan 1999

Genetic Test Results And The Duty To Disclose: Can Medical Researchers Control Liability?, Richard L. Furman, Jr.

Seattle University Law Review

This Comment examines research on the human genome and explores the existence of a duty to disclose genetic test results in clinical and research settings. Part II begins with a hypothetical describing how such a duty to disclose can arise. Part III (A-C) describes advances in the sequencing of the human genome, the development of reliable tests for genetic disorders, and issues regarding access and control of genetic test samples and results. Part III (D) looks at the tort law basis for a general duty of physicians to disclose medical information, the specific duty of clinical physicians to disclose the …

Copepod Grazing Selection And Particle Discrimination On The Basis Of Psp Toxin Content, Gregory J. Teegarden Jan 1999

Copepod Grazing Selection And Particle Discrimination On The Basis Of Psp Toxin Content, Gregory J. Teegarden

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Omnivorous copepods are capable of discriminatory feeding using mechano- and chemosensory mechanisms. The presence of phycotoxins in phytoplankton often results in reduced consumption of such potential prey by copepods, though it has not been clear if this is the result of discriminatory feeding by either tactile (mechanosensory) or chemosensory recognition of toxic prey, or perhaps a physiological response to ingested neurotoxic compounds. In this study, experiments were performed to determine whether 3 species of marine copepods (Acartia tonsa, Centropages hamatus, and Eurytemora herdmani) that commonly co-occur with toxic Alexandrium spp. dinoflagellates were capable of discriminating between cultured Alexandrium spp. strains …

Animal Cruelty And Violence Against Humans: Making The Connection, Randall Lockwood Jan 1999

Animal Cruelty And Violence Against Humans: Making The Connection, Randall Lockwood

Animal Law Review

The idea that there is a connection between the way individuals treat animals and human beings has a long history in Western popular culture, but a shorter history as the subject of scientific research. Recently, a growing body of evidence has confirmed an association between repeated, intentional abuse of animals and a variety of violent antisocial behaviors including child abuse, domestic violence, and violent criminal activities. The public made this connection before most law-enforcement or menial health officials. Public sentiment for tougher and better-enforced animal cruelty laws is strong, and there has been a dramatic response to recent high-profile animal …

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of reversible nonthrombocytopenic palpable purpura associated with metoclopramide.

CASE SUMMARY: A 72-year-old white man was admitted for worsening palpable purpura over a two-day period. Two days prior to admission, metoclopramide 10 mg orally three times per day was started for a gastrointestinal condition. Upon admission, all drugs were continued except metoclopramide. Over the next two days, the purpura began to resolve. Platelet count was within normal limits on admission and the patient developed no serious consequences because of the purpura.
