A Comparison Of The Maximal Torque Production Of The Quadriceps Muscle During Morning And Afternoon Strength Assessment, Shawn Mccoul

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

The purpose of this study was to compare maximal quadriceps torque production in early morning hours to afternoon hours. Thirty male subjects volunteered to participate in this study and were randomly assigned to an AM or PM testing session. At least one week after the first test, the subjects completed a similar test in the opposite time slot. Each subject was positioned on the Kin-Com (Chattecx Corp., Chattanooga, 'IN) dynamometer and performed six maximal concentric isokinetic repetitions of knee extension at 600/s between the ROM of 10° and 80° of knee flexion. The AM/PM ratios indicated no significant difference between …

Low Back Pain: An Orthopedic Review Of Sacroiliac Joint Etiologic Theories, Key Diagnostic Criteria, And Effective Manual Therapy Treatment, Michael J. Ressler

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Physical therapists commonly evaluate and treat patients with referral of low back pain. There still remains great controversy whether sacroiliac joint dysfunction produces significant pathological problems. It is imperative that the therapist providing the care posses skillful knowledge in the areas of anatomy, biomechanics, evaluation, and treatment of sacroiliac joint dysfunction. These characteristics are required in order to effectively treat patients with low back pain possibly resulting from sacroiliac joint dysfunction.

The purpose of this independent study is to review existing literature with primary focus on the anatomy, biomechanics, evaluation, and efficacious manual therapy treatment of sacroiliac joint dysfunction. Primary …

Treatment Of Urinary Incontinence, Martin Steidl Jan 1999

Treatment Of Urinary Incontinence, Martin Steidl

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Urinary incontinence (UI) is a significant medical issue to many people. The exact number of those suffering from incontinence is hard to quantify due to the stigma that many with UI experience and the subsequent under reporting of the condition. What is known is that UI affects far more women than men, and that stress incontinence (SI) is the most prevalent type. There are many reasons for the predominance of SI. The primary reason is the physiological and anatomical changes associated with menopause and parity in women. UI can be treated with one of three methods: surgery, pharmacologic therapy, and …

Diet And Exercise-Induced Menstrual Dysfunction In The Female Athlete, Roberta Welp Jan 1999

Diet And Exercise-Induced Menstrual Dysfunction In The Female Athlete, Roberta Welp

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

In recent years there has been an overwhelming increase in the number of females participating in athletic activities. As members of the sports medicine team, physical therapists must be able to recognize afflictions unique to the female athlete. A cluster of increasingly common disorders has been titled the "female athlete triad." By definition, it is the inter-relatedness of disordered eating, amenorrhea, and osteoporosis. Clinically, it may include other factors such as excessive exercise, various degrees and forms of menstrual dysfunction, and additional issues such as fractures, scoliosis, and general musculoskeletal injury.

The purpose of this study is to provide information …

The Changing Form And Function Of Claisebrook - East Perth, Graeme R. O'Neill

Theses : Honours

This study will focus on the changing social function and form of Claisebrook, East Perth, and will show how the area has geographically changed over time. This research will also examine the significance of the area to the Aboriginal people and focus on the settlement and land use patterns from the 1830's to the 1990's. It will then elucidate the characteristics attributable to a sense of place, and link these to the physical and urban environment throughout different periods of time. Finally, this study will concentrate on the current redevelopment, investigating the current form and function of the area. It …

Child Abuse : Creating The Public In The Public Service Advertisement, Mark Brennan Jan 1999

Child Abuse : Creating The Public In The Public Service Advertisement, Mark Brennan

Theses : Honours

This thesis seeks to examine the discursive construction of the public. Unlike studies before it, it explores a site that has yet to be analysed in depth- the public service advertisement. While the characteristics of this genre are understood in cultural common sense, what has been neglected is a consideration of how these advertisements can be understood to address an entity that is amorphous and unknowable. This study argues that such an address is only possible in this genre through the discourse of childhood. By employing an interdisciplinary approach that includes cultural and-media studies, political theory and sociology, the history …

Neighbourhood Cohesion And Sense Of Community In A Local Church Context, Colin Cowie Jan 1999

Neighbourhood Cohesion And Sense Of Community In A Local Church Context, Colin Cowie

Theses : Honours

The nature and implications for growth of sense of community (SOC) in a local church setting were explored. In study one, the Neighbourhood Cohesion Index (NCI) and Sense of Community Index (SCI) were completed by 108 Sorrento Anglican Church members. Principal components and reliability analyses indicated that the church-referenced SCI was an appropriate assessment tool. Three factors labelled values, influence and neighbourhood concern emerged in a SCI principal components analysis. A hierarchical multiple regression indicated that talking to neighbours about religion and the SCI values subscale predicted 22% of the variance in the NCI. The prediction that the church-referenced SCI …

"The Silent Artillery Of Time" Understanding Social Change In The Rural Midwest, Jon Lauck Jan 1999

"The Silent Artillery Of Time" Understanding Social Change In The Rural Midwest, Jon Lauck

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The great historian of republicanism, J. G. A. Pocock, noted that "[f]rom Jefferson to Frederick Jackson Turner and beyond, it was commonplace that sooner or later the frontier would be closed, the land filled, and the corruptions of history-urbanization, finance capital, 'the cross of gold,' 'the military-industrial complex' -would overtake America. Here are the origins of American historical pessimism." The American frontier has long since closed, the agrarian order has long-since passed away, and the pessimism has mushroomed into a "palpable despair and cynicism and violence," "dark signs of the times," according to the philosopher Jean Bethke Elshtain. The disappearance …

Romantic Women And La Lucha Denise Chavez's Face Of An Angel, Francine K. Ramsey Richter Jan 1999

Romantic Women And La Lucha Denise Chavez's Face Of An Angel, Francine K. Ramsey Richter

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Denise Chavez's skillful and evocative Face of an Angel (1994) examines the inequitable and discomfiting, yet somehow powerful, place of women in New Mexico border culture.! Their lives are mainly devoted to the hard work of serving others, and Chavez connects the past and present of the women of the area through the life story of the main character Soveida Dosamantes (born in 1948). Much of what makes up Soveida's present, everyday existence has its origins over the border in Old Mexico, and the established customs and traditions have a great deal of impact upon Soveida and her family in …
