Availability Cascades And Risk Regulation, Cass R. Sunstein, Timur Kuran Jan 1999

Availability Cascades And Risk Regulation, Cass R. Sunstein, Timur Kuran

Articles

An availability cascade is a self-reinforcing process of collective belief formation by which an expressed perception triggers a chain reaction that gives the perception increasing plausibility through its rising availability in public discourse. The driving mechanism involves a combination of informational and reputational motives: Individuals endorse the perception partly by learning from the apparent beliefs of others and partly by distorting their public responses in the interest of maintaining social acceptance. Availability entrepreneurs- activists who manipulate the content of public discourse-strive to trigger availability cascades likely to advance their agendas. The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act As A Threat To Global Harmony, Steven R. Salbu

Michigan Journal of International Law

Focusing primarily on the pragmatic and moral perils of cultural imperialism, I also alluded very briefly to a "political peril" that arises from the FCPA. This peril consists of the added risk of cross-national hostility that is attributable to officious and overreaching legislation across national borders. This article will examine the political hazard in greater detail, explaining why the proliferation of FCPA-style legislation unjustifiably increases the threat to global harmony.

A Literature Review Of Parental Involvement In Public Schools From 1994-1999, Barbara Gohl Keene

All Graduate Projects

The purpose of this project was to see how parental involvement affected student achievement and how educators could involve parents at the middle grades and junior/senior high levels. American families and our society have changed dramatically over the past twenty-five years. These changes have had exciting effects on educational processes in schools. It has become a challenge to involve parents in the educational process, especially during the middle, junior and senior high school years. Parents are far more involved in their children's early childhood education than in their later years of schooling (Pryor, 1995). Involvement drops off dramatically when children …
