A Caveat Regarding The Unfolding Argument: Implications Of Plasticity, Viknas N. O'Reilly-Shah, Alessandro Maria Selvitella, Aaron Schurger
Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
The unfolding argument in the neuroscience of consciousness posits that causal structure cannot account for consciousness because any recurrent neural network (RNN) can be “unfolded” into a functionally equivalent feedforward neural network (FNN) with identical input–output behavior. Subsequent debate has focused on dynamical properties and philosophy of science critiques. We examine a boundary condition on the unfolding argument for RNN systems with rapid plasticity in their connection weights. We demonstrate through rigorous mathematical proofs that rapid plasticity negates the functional equivalence between the RNN and the FNN. Our proofs address history-dependent plasticity, dynamical systems analysis, information-theoretic considerations, perturbational stability, complexity …

Using In-Home Air Quality Monitoring To Reduce Cannabis Secondhand Smoke Exposure In Children: Quantitative Pilot Feasibility Study, Vincent Berardi, Bradley N. Collins, Laura M. Glynn, Eusabeia Silfanus, Darby G. Lyons, Stephen J. Lepore
Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
Background: An estimated 5 to 8 million US children live with a parent who uses cannabis, and most cannabis users report smoking cannabis inside their homes, placing children at risk for cannabis secondhand smoke (cSHS) exposure. Indoor air quality (IAQ) monitoring provides real-time feedback on airborne pollutants and has shown promise in reducing in-home tobacco secondhand smoke exposure, suggesting its potential as an effective harm reduction strategy for cSHS.
Objective: This pilot study evaluated the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness of using low-cost, off-the-shelf IAQ monitors to increase caregivers’ awareness of children’s cSHS exposure risk and to change …

Hand hygiene is the cornerstone of infection prevention in healthcare settings and is particularly critical in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) where patients are highly vulnerable due to immature immune systems and frequent exposure to invasive procedures. Healthcare associated infections (HAIs) remain a significant cause of morbidity and mortality among neonates. Evidence consistently identifies proper hand hygiene as the single most effective intervention to reduce HAIs in NICUs. Despite its simplicity, compliance among healthcare workers is often suboptimal, influenced by factors such as workload and accessibility of hand hygiene resources.

Improving Documentation Accuracy Of Surgical Site Infection Prevention Bundles Using Implementation Science Frameworks, Laura Fraser, Lynn M. Sackett-Hodge, Michelle Schaeffer, Pamela S. Bozigar
Conference Presentation Abstracts
Accurate documentation of Surgical Site Infection (SSI) prevention bundle components is essential for quality improvement and patient safety. In National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN)-reported colon (COLO) and hysterectomy (HYST) procedures, incomplete or inconsistent documentation undermines bundle fidelity and limits evaluation of outcomes. This initiative aims to determine whether embedding evidence-based interventions within implementation science frameworks improves documentation accuracy and ensures sustainability.

Trophic Transfer Of Fluorescent Polyethylene Microplastics In A Simplified Artemia–Oreochromis Aquatic Food Chain, Dativa J. Shilla
Tanzania Journal of Science
Microplastics (MPs) are pervasive contaminants in aquatic ecosystems, yet experimental evidence of their trophic transfer within tropical African food webs remains scarce. This study provides experimental evidence of indirect trophic transfer of microplastics from Artemia salina to Oreochromis urolepis, a cichlid species of ecological and economic importance in African inland and coastal waters. A simplified two-level food chain was established by exposing A. salina nauplii to fluorescent polyethylene microplastics (10–20 µm; 1, 10, and 100 mg L⁻¹) and subsequently feeding them to juvenile O. urolepis under controlled laboratory conditions. These concentrations were selected to represent a range of exposure levels …

Tanzania Journal of Science
Root-rats (Tachyoryctes splendens) and emini silvery mole-rats (Heliophobius argenteocinereus emini) are common subterranean rodents that are essential component of the ecosystem. They serve as prey for small to medium-sized carnivores and birds of prey but their role as hosts to parasites is limited. The present study, explored the Gastrointestinal Tract (GIT) contents of 40 rodents (20 T. splendens and 20 H. a. emini, respectively) to acquire information on parasites diversity of these mammals. The GIT contents from subterranean rodents in a sex ratio of 1:1 were examined under a compound microscope to isolate helminths. The isolated helminths belonged to the …

METHODS: ALERT is a multisystem, cluster-randomized clinical trial including clinicians ordering echocardiograms across 5 U.S. health systems encompassing 35 hospitals between August 2024 and September …
Process Development Of C63000 Nickel Aluminum Bronze For Cold Spray, Trent Lamont
Process Development Of C63000 Nickel Aluminum Bronze For Cold Spray, Trent Lamont
Dissertations and Theses
Nickel-aluminum bronze (NAB) is widely used for maritime components but is traditionally limited to casting due to its complex microstructure. Fine β′ phase formation in NAB is governed by the solid-state transformation of the high-temperature β phase during cooling. This ordered martensitic β′ forms via diffusionless transformation, contributing to brittleness. Conventional metal additive manufacturing (AM) techniques, such as Laser Powder Bed Fusion and Directed Energy Deposition, experience high in-process cooling rates that promote fine β′ formation, compromising mechanical performance. Powder production similarly suffers from β′ formation, often requiring additional processing. Cold Mechanically Derived (CMD) powders, produced from wrought feedstocks, retain …

Comparative Effectiveness Of Olmesartan Medoxomil In Monotherapy And Combination Therapy With Other Arb Medications: Literature Review, Deepika Saini
University Honors Theses
Hypertension remains one of the leading health issues; however, the awareness and control remain limited, with approximately 1.4 billion people affected by hypertension, yet only one in five has the condition effectively controlled. Despite the availability of effective treatments, knowledge and awareness remain limited. Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) are widely used antihypertensive medications because of their efficacy and safety profiles. Among these, Olmesartan Medoxomil has emerged as a prominent option, demonstrating strong efficacy in lowering blood pressure, both as monotherapy and in combination with other antihypertensive agents.
This thesis examines the comparative effectiveness of Olmesartan Medoxomil versus other ARBs …

Pinnlab: An Interactive Dashboard For Teaching Data-Driven Parameter Estimation In Differential Equations Using Physics-Informed Neural Networks, Mohan J. Parthasarathy, Padmanabhan Seshaiyer
CODEE Journal
Undergraduate instruction in ordinary differential equations (ODEs) is typically organized around the forward problem: finding solution trajectories when the governing equation and its parameters are known. In scientific practice, however, inverse problems are often more relevant, requiring unknown parameters to be inferred from noisy observations while assessing whether a proposed model is consistent with the data. We introduce PINNLab, an open-source MATLAB dashboard designed to help undergraduate students explore inverse modeling through physics-informed neural networks (PINNs). PINNLab presents PINNs as a complementary data-driven framework that connects differential equations, optimization, empirical data, and scientific machine learning. The instructional sequence is organized …

High-grade gliomas (HGGs) are aggressive brain tumors with poor prognosis, driven in part by metabolic and epigenetic adaptations. Methionine metabolism supports HGG growth by supplying S-adenosylmethionine for methylation reactions, yet how nutrient availability influences chromatin organization in HGG remains incompletely understood. Using an immunocompetent mouse model of HGG, we found that dietary methionine restriction reduced tumor proliferation, extended survival, and induced partial nuclear inversion. We identified Hp1bp3 as a key regulator of tumor growth that functions by interacting with nuclear tethering proteins to mediate chromatin reorganization. Loss of Hp1bp3 results in the upregulation of histone demethylases leading to selective depletion …

Broadly Reactive Human Monoclonal Antibodies Targeting Influenza A Nucleoprotein Lack Protective Activity In Vivo, Walter N Harrington, David C Brice, Aaron J Schmitz, Jackson S Turner, Rafael Brent, Philip A Mudd, Ali H Ellebedy, Richard J Webby
2020-Current year OA Pubs
The antibody response to influenza virus infection targets numerous viral proteins, with those specific for the hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) surface glycoproteins being the most extensively studied. Antibodies to HA and NA function as independent immune correlates of protection and form the basis of most vaccine approaches. In contrast, the contribution of antibodies to other viral proteins such as the nucleoprotein (NP) remains unclear, and existing studies have reached conflicting conclusions. In this work, we examined three human monoclonal NP antibodies isolated from plasmablasts of two individuals naturally infected with influenza A virus (IAV) during the 2018-2019 influenza season. …

Notifications Management Via Attention Budgeting And Collision Detection, Ashwin Goyal
Defensive Publications Series
Notifications to mobile devices that persist beyond their contextually relevant windows cease to be informative prompts and can become annoyances. Current notification paradigms treat the notification tray as a static, append-only data repository, placing the burden of notification lifecycle management and cleanup on the user. This disclosure describes automated notifications management techniques that transform notifications from static payloads into dynamic, self-resolving objects. The techniques include temporal notifications-lifecycle management, app-ecosystem intelligence, state synchronization, spatial optimization, device context, etc. Leveraging automated notification updates and retractions, the techniques reduce or eliminate disadvantages of persistent notifications. The techniques change the notification management paradigm by …
Defensive Publication: A Proactive Compliance And Security Enforcement Gateway For Model Context Protocol (Mcp) Servers And Agentic Ai Systems With Two-Stage Bidirectional Inspection, Immutable Sensitivity-Aware Routing, And Tamper-Evident Audit, Tiago Rosado
Defensive Publications Series
This document discloses the architecture of a proactive compliance and security enforcement gateway that mediates all traffic between AI agents (or human clients) and the large language models (LLMs) and Model Context Protocol (MCP) tool servers they invoke. The gateway operates as a reverse proxy enforcing a fail-closed posture: every inbound prompt and every outbound response is inspected by a two-stage pipeline — a sub-5ms offline machine -learning classifier followed by a configurable LLM-based deep-inspection backend — before crossing the boundary. A three-layer sensitivity pipeline (regex, ML, LLM) classifies payloads and routes data graded CONFIDENTIAL or RESTRICTED to local-only models …

Meningioma Detection From Mri: A Comparative Study Of Deep Learning Models, A. H. Doha, Sandi Jennifer, Fatima Alabdaly
AUIQ Complementary Biological System
This study compares several deep learning models including DenseNet20, CNN, ResNet50, VGG19, EfficientNet-B3, MobileNetV2, NASNetMobile, Xception to automatically classify brain meningiomas from MRI scans. A public dataset was used to evaluate the proposed model. All models were trained, validated, and tested on this dataset. Because meningiomas are common and manual reads, the goal is to speed and standardize diagnosis. Our main contribution is pairing a high-accuracy classifier with deep learning models. Among all models, DenseNet201 performed best, reaching 0.991% accuracy and reliably separating tumorous from non-tumorous MRIs. Future work will expand the dataset and incorporate stronger segmentation to further boost …

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
Ignatian pedagogy is the philosophy and methodology for teaching and learning that evolved from the wisdom accumulated from 500 years of Jesuit education. The Ignatian approach views education as a collaborative process that transforms students and teachers, preparing them for moral and ethical action in the world. While the core values of Jesuit education have remained constant, the changing demographics within our Jesuit communities and among the faculty and staff of our institutions offer an opportunity to celebrate its many intersections with peer-reviewed research on effective pedagogical approaches that center students and foster justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion. This study examines the formative impact of selected faculty and staff formation initiatives offered at Boston College, with particular attention to those shaped by Ignatian spirituality. This formative commitment, oriented toward and witnessing to an appreciation of the unconditional worth of the human being, may empower a subset of medical students—who are engaged by a life of faith and open to the transcendent invitation of their lives—to experience an even more fundamental transformation—one that …
