Lewis Carroll: Author, Mathematician, And Christian, David L. Neuhouser

ACMS Journal 2004

Although a Christian, an author, and a mathematician, Charles Letwidge Dodgson (better known as Lewis Carroll) wrote very few works in which these three aspects of his person was present. The only examples of him merging these interests are in Sylvie and Bruno and Sylvie and Bruno Concluded. This paper will explore what motivated him to make these works and whether or not they were successful.

Urbanization Of Rural Landscapes Syllabus And Teaching Materials From A University Course, Richard Olson

CARI Extension and Education Materials for Sustainable Agriculture

An introduction of the students to the structure and expectations of the course, the learning objectives, and the evaluation procedures for determining grades. Through a lecture/slide presentation. the students are introduced to the concept of the landscape as the key level in the spatial hierarchy for evaluating the effects of land use decisions. The relationship between landscape structure and landscape function is explored. A gallery walk exercise promotes interaction among the students as they draw on their own knowledge to determine the factors at each level of the spatial hierarchy that are most important in influencing land use decisions. Readings …

Perceiving And Responding To The Personal/Group Discrimination Discrepancy, Mindi D. Foster, Kimberley Matheson Jan 1999

Perceiving And Responding To The Personal/Group Discrimination Discrepancy, Mindi D. Foster, Kimberley Matheson

Psychology Faculty Publications

To explain why minority group members recognize less personal than group discrimination, research has focused on cognitive processes. While within self-categorization theory it may be argued the discrepancy is a function of a salient social self that perceptually discounts the personal self, it can also be argued that depersonalization allows for the cognitive possibility of perceiving similar amounts of personal and group discrimination. The present study suggested that, consistent with group consciousness theories, the social self may serve to both discount as well as integrate the social self, depending on the way in which the social self is defined. Using …

Acting Out Against Gender Discrimination: The Effects Of Different Social Identities, Mindi D. Foster Jan 1999

Acting Out Against Gender Discrimination: The Effects Of Different Social Identities, Mindi D. Foster

Psychology Faculty Publications

Self-categorization theory suggests that when a social identity is salient, group- oriented behavior will ensue. Thus, women should be likely to act out against gender discrimination when their social identity as women is salient. However, self-categorization theory has typically defined a social identity along stereo- types, which may serve instead to maintain the status quo. Two studies therefore examined the effects of two different social identities on taking action against discrimination. Participants were female students (Anglo American (93%), African American (2%), Native American (2%), Hispanic (1%), Asian American (1%) and Other (1%)). Study 1 examined a structural model and Study …

Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (Snp) Discovery And Linkage Mapping Of Bovine Cytokine Genes, William M. Grosse, Steven M. Kappes, William W. Laegreid, John W. Keele, Carol G. Chitko-Mckown, Michael P. Heaton Jan 1999

Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (Snp) Discovery And Linkage Mapping Of Bovine Cytokine Genes, William M. Grosse, Steven M. Kappes, William W. Laegreid, John W. Keele, Carol G. Chitko-Mckown, Michael P. Heaton

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Polymorphic markers at bovine gene loci facilitate the integration of cattle genetic maps with those of humans and mice. To this end, 31 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers were developed for seven bovine chemokine genes. Loci were amplified from bovine genomic DNA by the polymerase chain reaction, and candidate amplicons were sequenced to determine their identity. Amplified loci from 24 founding parents and select progeny from a beef cattle reference population were sequenced and analyzed for SNPs. SNP haplotype alleles were determined by examining segregation patterns and used to establish the locus position on the bovine linkage map. Loci for …

Considerations For The School Psychologist When Providing Services For Maltreated Foster Children: A Developmental Perspective, Linda Webster Jan 1999

Considerations For The School Psychologist When Providing Services For Maltreated Foster Children: A Developmental Perspective, Linda Webster

Benerd College Faculty Articles

As the body of research on attachment grows, attachment theory is being increasingly utilized by psychologists as a useful way of conceptualizing the problem behaviors that many foster children present. In addition, this paper explores Bowlby’s (1988) model of developmental pathways as a means to understand both normal and abnormal processes and patterns of adaptation and maladaptation. The empirical bases connecting the theoretical principles of attachment with child maltreatment are discussed, and a theoretical rationale for assessment and intervention with attachment-disordered foster children with an emphasis on modifying the child’s negative working model of attachment relationships is presented.

Playing The Waiting Game: The Life And Letters Of Elizabeth Wolley, Elizabeth Mccutcheon

Quidditas

Almost fifty years ago Wallace Notestein, an English historian, commented that while both the men and the women of late-sixteenth- and early-seventeenth-century England remain "strangers" and “shadowy figures” to us, the women are “much more shadowy.” Pointing out that “Our knowledge of women comes largely from the incidental mention of them by men who seldom took pains to characterize and individualize them,” he insisted that “It is as individuals that we must know them, if we are to understand them as members of a sex.” Obviously a great deal has changed for the better. We know much more about the …

“There Is Nothing More Divine Than These, Except Man”: Thomas Moffett And Insect Sociality, Monique Bourque

Quidditas

When Thoomas Moffett wrote in the Theater of Insects that "there is nothing more divine than these, except Man," he asked his readers some pointed questions about insects, and made some blunt statements:

where is Nature more to be seen than in the smallest matters, where she is entirely all? for in great bodies the workmanship is easie, the matter being ductile; but in these that are so small and despicable, and almost nothing, what care? how great is the effect of it? how unspeakable is the perfection? ... Do you require Prudence? regard the Ant; Do you desire Justice? …

A Cross-Validation Of The Marshall University Step Test On College Males And Females Age 18-24, Mary Robin Hampton Jan 1999

A Cross-Validation Of The Marshall University Step Test On College Males And Females Age 18-24, Mary Robin Hampton

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Positive health entails more than the absence of disease; it is a state of physical, mental, and social well-being (Hartung, Krock, Crandall, Bisson, & Myhre, 1993; Payne & Hahn, 1995). Physical fitness, as described by Francis (1987), is the potential for making adequate functional adjustments to increased metabolic demands. Cardiorespiratory fitness (aerobic fitness) is believed to be the single best indicator of physical fitness (Astrand & Rodale, 1985). The standard index of cardiorespiratory fitness is maximum oxygen uptake (VO^^), or the maximum rate at which oxygen can be consumed. VO2max is dependent upon the cardiovascular system’s ability to deliver blood …
