Functionally Dissociating Aspects Of Event Memory: The Effects Of Combined Perirhinal And Postrhinal Cortex Lesions On Object And Place Memory In The Rat., T J Bussey, J L Muir, J P Aggleton

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Reciprocal interactions between the hippocampus and the perirhinal and parahippocampal cortices form core components of a proposed temporal lobe memory system. For this reason, the involvement of the hippocampus in event memory is thought to depend on its connections with these cortical areas. Contrary to these predictions, we found that NMDA-induced lesions of the putative rat homologs of these cortical areas (perirhinal plus postrhinal cortices) did not impair performance on two allocentric spatial tasks highly sensitive to hippocampal dysfunction. Remarkably, for one of the tasks there was evidence of a facilitation of performance. The same cortical lesions did, however, disrupt …

Plasma Homocyst(E)Ine Concentration, But Not Mthfr Genotype, Is Associated With Variation In Carotid Plaque Area, J. David Spence, M. Rene Malinow, Peter A. Barnett, Ali J. Marian, David Freeman, Robert A. Hegele

Department of Medicine Publications

Background and Purpose - Elevated plasma homocyst(e)ine [H(e)] concentration is associated with premature atherosclerosis. A common cause of elevated plasma H(e) concentration is a thermolabile mutation (677T) in the gene encoding methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR). We sought to determine whether plasma H(e) concentration or MTHFR genotype would be more strongly associated with carotid plaque area (CPA), a potential intermediate phenotype of atherosclerosis. Methods - In 307 subjects who were ascertained through a premature atherosclerosis clinic, we measured CPA with 2- dimensional ultrasound and also determined traditional atherosclerosis risk factors, in addition to plasma H(e) concentration and MTHFR genotypes. Results - We …

Entrenching Interests: State Supermajority Requirements To Raise Taxes, Max J. Minzner Jan 1999

Entrenching Interests: State Supermajority Requirements To Raise Taxes, Max J. Minzner

Faculty Scholarship

At the opening of the 104th Congress, the new Republican majority imposed the first supermajority requirement "limited to particular cases" in the history of Congress. The unanswered question is whether the Rule is a good idea, particularly whether this Rule is well designed. The states have extensive experience with supermajority requirements for tax increases. This article attempts to answer the question of supermajority design. If alterations in the tax code are to be restricted, how should they be limited? To what type of bills should a supermajority requirement apply? At what level should the requirement be implemented? When and how …

The Perceived Effectiveness Of Christian And Secular Graduate Training Programs In Preparing Christian Psychologists To Deal With Experiences Of Sexual Attraction, Katheryn Rhoads Meek, Mark R. Mcminn Jan 1999

The Perceived Effectiveness Of Christian And Secular Graduate Training Programs In Preparing Christian Psychologists To Deal With Experiences Of Sexual Attraction, Katheryn Rhoads Meek, Mark R. Mcminn

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Most psychologists experience feelings of sexual attraction toward clients, and for some Christian therapists this situation can be further complicated by their tendency to deny such sexual attraction. How effective are graduate training programs in teaching Christian psychologists to manage feelings of sexual attraction in professional contexts? In this survey, 258 Christian psychologists answered questions regarding their graduate training. A positive training environment was related to healthy coping responses in managing feelings of sexual attraction, and graduates of explicitly Christian training programs reported greater satisfaction with training conditions than graduates of secular programs. Those involved in training professional psychologists should …

Sports And The Law: A Modern Anthology, Alfred Mathewson, Kenneth Shropshire Jan 1999

Sports And The Law: A Modern Anthology, Alfred Mathewson, Kenneth Shropshire

Faculty Book Display Case

Sports law literature has evolved over the last twenty years as writers have successfully grappled with the myriad legal and quasi-legal issues that arise in the context of sports. Scholars addressing these topics have heightened our understanding of the complex factual, legal, and social issues that sports matters generate. This anthology continues this development and includes excerpts that address the broad dimensions of sports and the law.

Rather than simply explain the law, the excerpts contained in Sports and the Law seek also to examine the multiple variables that have influenced the development of the law of sports. After presenting …

Management For The Red Gulch Dinosaur Tracksite Big Horn County, Wyoming, Environmental Assessment, United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Land Management

Environmental Assessments (WY)

A review of existing land-use planning decisions is being conducted to evaluate how to best manage public lands, resources, educational opportunities, and other values associated with the recent discovery of dinosaur tracks on BLM-administered public lands near Shell, Wyoming. The tracks were not addressed in the Washakie Resource Management Plan (RMP) which was completed in 1988. A review of BLM's planning decisions for the discovery area is needed to evaluate the adequacy of existing management prescriptions for the protection of the tracks and related values.

The New Wave Of Speech And Privacy Developments In Cyberspace, Eric J. Sinrod, Jeffrey W. Reyna, Barak D. Jolish

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

As with any other medium of information, the Internet has the potential to be used as a tool for businesses, individuals, and government to peer into people's personal lives. Conversely, many are concerned that the Internet can also be used to deliver objectionable or obscene information to minors. These concerns fuel the ongoing debate over whether and how to regulate the Internet to protect the privacy and speech concerns implicated by its many uses. Congress, the courts, the European Community, and a coalition of Internet industry members have taken several decisive steps in an effort to focus the ever-changing policy …

Recent Trademark Cases Examine Reverse Domain Name Hijacking, Carl Oppedahl

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

The outcome of a domain name dispute can fall anywhere along a spectrum. Some courts grant strong remedies against domain name owners, while others find no liability for domain name owners with common or generic dictionary words that are used by many companies. For every highly visible "strong remedies" case in which the trademark owner chose to go to federal court, there have been dozens of unpublicized cases in which the challenger went to the "court" of Network Solutions, Inc. instead. This article focuses on the three recent cases in which domain name owners, faced with NSI decisions in favor …

Choice Of Entity And Securities Aspects Of Independent Film Offerings By First-Time Filmmakers, Michael L. Maddren

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

Independent films have become increasingly common over recent years. It has become increasingly difficult for these first-time filmmakers to obtain studio financing. Filmmakers who cannot obtain studio financing often turn to private investors. A filmmaker seeking private investor financing must confront several legal issues. This article examines the choice of entity and securities law aspects of independent film financing, and makes suggestions for the independent filmmaker facing these issues.
