Vulnerability To Natural Disasters In A Rapidly Growing, Affluent Society, British Columbia, Canada, Jonathan P. Maclean Belcher Jan 1999

Vulnerability To Natural Disasters In A Rapidly Growing, Affluent Society, British Columbia, Canada, Jonathan P. Maclean Belcher

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

British Columbia is a province that experienced rapid demographic, urban and economic growth in the past few decades. It is a modern and technologically sophisticated society. Although the province possesses the knowledge and resources to combat most dangers that threaten its people and communities, these dangers continue to outstrip the precautions and safety measures in place. The reasons for this seem to lie less in the characteristics of dangers or hazards, but rather relate to socioeconomic processes and organisations that disadvantage particular people, groups and sectors of the population, or make them more vulnerable to dangers than others. This thesis …

Nitrate Attenuation In A Narrow Non-Forested Riparian Buffer Zone In An Agricultural Watershed In Southern Ontario, Mark David Harris Jan 1999

Nitrate Attenuation In A Narrow Non-Forested Riparian Buffer Zone In An Agricultural Watershed In Southern Ontario, Mark David Harris

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Riparian buffer zones are defined as strips of natural vegetation separating streams or lakes from surrounding upland landscapes. These zones may effectively reduce the nitrate-N load in shallow ground water draining intensively fertilized agricultural regions. Contemporary research has tended to focus on wide, forested riparian zones situated on poorly drained lowland sites. In addition, research has typically focused on the growing season, when the ecosystem is biologically active, with relatively day hydrological conditions. This field study monitored spatial and temporal patterns of nitrate-N in a comparatively narrow, non-forested buffer zone situated in an upland agricultural watershed in southern Ontario. Results …

Institutional Arrangements For Cooperative Fisheries Management: A Case Study Of The Newfoundland And Labrador Northern Shrimp Fishery, Bram F. Noble Jan 1999

Institutional Arrangements For Cooperative Fisheries Management: A Case Study Of The Newfoundland And Labrador Northern Shrimp Fishery, Bram F. Noble

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The intent of this study is to examine the present institutional arrangements of the Newfoundland and Labrador Northern shrimp fishery, to identify the roles of cooperative fisheries economic development corporations and make recommendations for institutional improvements. There are a number of institutional and organizational arrangements more favorable for fisheries management and development than present ones (Bishop, 1981; Bromley, 1982; McCay and Acheson, 1987; Pinkerton, 1989). Jentoft and McCay (1995) identified the need for this type of research in fisheries management in order to understand the complexity of relationships in fisheries management and to develop more effective means of fisheries management …

Improving Map Literacy: The Application Of Second Language Instruction Views And Techniques, Heather Anne Rayner Jan 1999

Improving Map Literacy: The Application Of Second Language Instruction Views And Techniques, Heather Anne Rayner

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Maps are a common and useful tool, yet many people do not know how to use them effectively. Map education has typically been inadequate for teaching people the skills involved in map use and map reading. Map education in schools, where people typically learn their mapping skills, can be improved. This thesis looks at specific ways to improve map education. Based upon previous research, it looks at cartography from a language perspective to determine whether findings from the language research can be applied to cartography, and more specifically to map education. Maps serve to communicate information, and have been compared …

Natural Disturbance And Land Cover Patterns In A Mountainous, Sub-Arctic Environment (Yukon), A. Bruce Wurtele Jan 1999

Natural Disturbance And Land Cover Patterns In A Mountainous, Sub-Arctic Environment (Yukon), A. Bruce Wurtele

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The dynamics of landscape pattern and disturbance were studied in the ‘green belt’ area of Kluane National Park, Yukon. White spruce montane forests and various sub-alpine and alpine vegetation communities dominate the study area, adjoining the Kluane Ranges of the St. Elias Mountains. Combining theory on landscape structure and function, the relationships of disturbance regimes and landscape pattern are examined. The landscape mosaic was mapped from classification of multispectral Landsat Thematic Mapper imagery. Landscape pattern was measured using quantitative indices of patch, class, and landscape attributes. Natural disturbance regimes, important to land cover development in the region, include fire, insect …

An Inquiry Into Changing Industrial Labour Force Patterns: Developed And Developing Countries, Kimberley Birjis Naqvi Jan 1999

An Inquiry Into Changing Industrial Labour Force Patterns: Developed And Developing Countries, Kimberley Birjis Naqvi

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Structural transformation patterns are examined to search for a systematic breakdown in the historical relationship between rising GDP and rising industrial labour force shares. Some older industrialised countries have considered focusing on knowledge and skill intensive activity as a new 'engine of growth' in response to industrial employment decline, and stagnating incomes. Such new economic activity anticipates trade with industrialising countries, whose incomes would rise with industrialisation. This relationship is dependent on the persistence of labour-intensive specialisation in industrialising countries. Three trends might prevent prolonged specialisation: increased international competitiveness, rising capital-intensity in production, and international economic specialisation. Each of these …

Exploration Of Immigration, Industrialization & Ethnicity In Waterville, Maine, Amy E. Rowe Jan 1999

Exploration Of Immigration, Industrialization & Ethnicity In Waterville, Maine, Amy E. Rowe

Honors Theses

This paper traces how hegemonic forces create boundaries through the specific examples of the Lebanese and Franco-Americans in Waterville, Maine. These two immigrant groups entered into Waterville after an English-Scottish Protestant majority had already been established in the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. The Franco-American immigration from Quebec extended well over a century and the flow of people out of Canada can generally be studied into two distinct waves. People were constantly coming into Waterville from Quebec, and a small number would return to live in Canada after a time. It is also critical to understand that Franco-Americans were settling …

Domestic Violence In The Hyperreal: An Examination Of Race And Ethnicity In "Real Life" Police Drama, Melissa J Monson Jan 1999

Domestic Violence In The Hyperreal: An Examination Of Race And Ethnicity In "Real Life" Police Drama, Melissa J Monson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This project investigates public representations of domestic violence by highlighting televised reality-based police dramas (e.g., COPS, L.A.P.D.: Life on the Beat, Real Stories of the Highway Patrol, etc.). Specifically, it focuses on the intersection of race, class, and gender in the portrayal of police treatment of victims and suspects of domestic violence. The data for this research were gathered through the use of latent and manifest content analysis. Seventy-two hours (including commercials) of reality based programing were recorded for analysis, making 144 total individual shows and 48 episodes of each program; In general, police officers were portrayed as treating domestic …

Town And Hinterland: Kingman And Mohave County, Arizona, 1860--1940, Diana Roock Dever Jan 1999

Town And Hinterland: Kingman And Mohave County, Arizona, 1860--1940, Diana Roock Dever

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This work examines the complex socioeconomic relationship between a northwestern Arizona town and its hinterland from 1860--1940. During this time, Mohave County, Arizona experiences the impact of three industries: mining, ranching, and railroaDing After 1882, mining boomtowns in the hinterland stimulate the growth of the Kingman railsiding, making it the only viable transshipment point in the county. The town's development relies on economic activities within its hinterland, national trends, and the character of its hardworking inhabitants, including its diverse racial and ethnic groups. Separate demographic profiles from 1900--1940 of Kingman and Mohave County's composition demonstrate changes that occur. Following the …

An Empirical Examination Of Factors That Influence Venture Capital Investment And The Location Of Funds, Sandra Phillips Johnson Jan 1999

An Empirical Examination Of Factors That Influence Venture Capital Investment And The Location Of Funds, Sandra Phillips Johnson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Entrepreneurs who contribute to economic growth have looked to venture capital firms as a major source of financing. This thesis tests the significance of explanatory variables for investment in venture capital at both the national and regional levels. The explanatory variables predicting national new investment in venture capital include capital pins tax rates, stock market pricing, risk premiums, and regulations on pension fund investment. Further, this thesis examines whether the location of venture capital funds depends on research and development funds at universities within a state, state corporate income tax burdens, state unemployment rates, and average weekly earnings within a …

Rethinking The Aceramic Neolithic: Insights From An Ethnoarchaeological Study On Cyprus, Sherry Lynn Marks Jan 1999

Rethinking The Aceramic Neolithic: Insights From An Ethnoarchaeological Study On Cyprus, Sherry Lynn Marks

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The so-called bizarre Aceramic Neolithic Period on the Mediterranean island of Cypros is reconsidered in light of an ethnoarchaeological study conducted in conjunction with the Kholetria-Ortos Project. The ethnoarchaeological study was designed to discover the organizational aspects of agropastoral strategies on the modern landscape and its relevance, if any, to the study of agropastoralism during the Aceramic Neolithic Period. As a result, a number of strategies considered "irrational" by agricultural policy analysts were identified, posing an analogical conceptual dilemma of contemporary phenomena. The presentation and discussion of the ethnoarchaeological results from the perspective of economic uncertainty, however, demonstrates that these …

Effect Of Atmospheric Variations On Subsurface Flow And Transport, Laila Badran

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis investigates the effect of atmospheric variations on subsurface flow and transport at the proposed high level waste repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. The conditions of subsurface transport were simulated with NUFT (Nonisothermal Unsaturated-Saturated Flow and Transport model) modeling software developed by the Lawrence Livermore National Labs (Nitao, 1995). Rock properties and surface ambient conditions specific to the mountain, including diurnal and seasonal changes in temperature, pressure and humidity were incorporated into the NUFT model. The effects of changing atmospheric conditions on the liquid and vapor phase components and fluxes were examined as well. Time swing analysis of weather …

Hydrogeology Of The Penoyer Valley Region, Central Nevada, Douglas Bruce Blatchford Jan 1999

Hydrogeology Of The Penoyer Valley Region, Central Nevada, Douglas Bruce Blatchford

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Groundwater in the vicinity of Penoyer Valley in central Nevada is part of the White River Flow system that drains from Jakes Valley in the north to Muddy River Springs in the south, a distance of 320 km (200mi). A four-basin subregion was modeled that indicates Penoyer, Garden, Coal, and Tikaboo Valleys are hydraulically connected. This connection is facilitated by carbonate rock formations found in the Worthington Mountains and the Timpahute Range, located on the eastern and southern perimeter of Penoyer Valley. Although Penoyer Valley and Garden Valley are hydraulically connected, it is likely that groundwater does not flow across …

Minority Housing Conditions In Urban Settings: Proposals For The Improvement Of Las Vegas' Amerindian Homes, Patricia Epee Stissi

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Native Americans living on reservations occupy some of the worst housing in the United States. But, nowadays, both on reservations and in urban settings, a small majority (about 56%) of them use the same types of architectural space as any other Americans. For example, HUD homes on the reservations, apartment complexes and small houses in cities, sometimes Public Housing. This research will explore a way to improve American Indians housing conditions while accentuating the need for sustainable and affordable housing in harmony with the tribal environment, because they bring a unique cultural heritage to urban society; For the purpose of …

Baseball's Manifest Destiny: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly, Patrick Valenti Miller Jan 1999

Baseball's Manifest Destiny: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly, Patrick Valenti Miller

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Brooklyn Dodgers fans blame Walter O'Malley for destroying a way of life and tarnishing the golden image of the postwar years when, in 1957, he relocated their beloved baseball team to the West. The relocation finds its impetus in American adherence to nineteenth-century Manifest Destiny and a major demographic shift following a post-World War II economic and technological boom; For the first half of the twentieth century, baseball transcended a mere rooting for a collection of superb athletes; civic identity rested in one's baseball team. Losing a team to another city was devastating. For some cities baseball provided the affirmation …

Gaming Growth In Clark County, Nevada: A Life Cycle Study, David Scott Frankhouser Jan 1999

Gaming Growth In Clark County, Nevada: A Life Cycle Study, David Scott Frankhouser

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to use product life cycle (PLC) theory to analyze the growth of gaming in Clark County, Nevada. Historical data for the last 30 years, provided by the Nevada Gaming Abstracts and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, allowed average casino revenues, hotel occupancy percentages, and visitor statistics to be examined. Based on this analysis, Clark County can be described as in the consolidation stage of Butler's six-stage life cycle model. The information learned from this study helps to show that gaming is a unique form of tourist destination. As such, operators need to …

Rural high school students were studied to examine their perceptions concerning potential educational and occupational barriers. Student characteristics and qualities were examined based on where the student lived and the type of school they attended. Students who had been involved in the agricultural curricula in …

In Harm's Way: The Continued Relevance Of The U.S. Navy's Forward Presence Mission In The Post-Cold War World, Christopher B. Earls Jan 1999

In Harm's Way: The Continued Relevance Of The U.S. Navy's Forward Presence Mission In The Post-Cold War World, Christopher B. Earls

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

With the breakup of the Soviet Union, the United States Navy has seen the fleet shrink from nearly 600 ships in 1988 to 320 ships in 1999, with a planned reduction to 305 ships by 2004. While the fleet has been reduced by nearly 50 percent over the last decade, the deployment of U.S. naval forces has continued at near-Cold War levels. The result is a mismatch between the national security requirements that naval forces are called on to support, and the forces available to meet those requirements. Some have suggested that the traditional forward presence mission of the Navy-Marine …

High School Biology Students' Participation In A Year-Long Sequence Of Analogical Activities: The Relationship Of Development Of Analogical Thought To Student Learning And Classroom Interactions., Marcella Wichser Hackney

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This research explored development of analogical thought through high school biology students' participation in a year-long sequence of analogical activities. Analogizing involves: selecting a familiar analog; mapping similarities and differences between the analog and less familiar target; making inferences from the analogy; evaluating validity of the inferences; and ultimately, understanding the biological target (Holyoak & Thagard, 1995). This investigation considered: student development of independence in learning through analogical thought, student learning of biology, the relationship between development of students' analogical thinking and students' learning of biology, and the quality of student interactions in the classroom. This researcher, as teacher participant, …

An Introduction To Joaquin Nin (1879-1949) And His "Veinte Cantos Populares Espanoles"., Gina Lottinger Anthon Jan 1999

An Introduction To Joaquin Nin (1879-1949) And His "Veinte Cantos Populares Espanoles"., Gina Lottinger Anthon

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Joaquin Nin was a leading figure in the renaissance of Spanish music in the early part of the twentieth century. A virtuoso concert pianist, he championed the music of little-known 17th and 18 th century Spanish composers, performing their works alongside Bach, Couperin, and Liszt. Nin's editions of "ancient" Spanish music and his arrangements of popular songs and dances brought a body of virtually unknown repertoire---the exotic music of the Iberian Peninsula---to a broader public. The purpose of this paper is to better acquaint the reader with Joaquin Nin and his first compositions, Veinte Cantos Populares Espanoles . Although Nin …
