An Introduction To Joaquin Nin (1879-1949) And His "Veinte Cantos Populares Espanoles"., Gina Lottinger Anthon Jan 1999

An Introduction To Joaquin Nin (1879-1949) And His "Veinte Cantos Populares Espanoles"., Gina Lottinger Anthon

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Joaquin Nin was a leading figure in the renaissance of Spanish music in the early part of the twentieth century. A virtuoso concert pianist, he championed the music of little-known 17th and 18 th century Spanish composers, performing their works alongside Bach, Couperin, and Liszt. Nin's editions of "ancient" Spanish music and his arrangements of popular songs and dances brought a body of virtually unknown repertoire---the exotic music of the Iberian Peninsula---to a broader public. The purpose of this paper is to better acquaint the reader with Joaquin Nin and his first compositions, Veinte Cantos Populares Espanoles . Although Nin …

Progressive Civic Development And Political Conflict: Regular Democrats And Reformers In New Orleans, 1896-1912., Robert Louis Dupont Jan 1999

Progressive Civic Development And Political Conflict: Regular Democrats And Reformers In New Orleans, 1896-1912., Robert Louis Dupont

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The 1896 elections in Louisiana produced a Regular Democrat as governor, but a reform government within New Orleans. The turbulence of the Populist era led to the unification of political factions behind disfranchisement of blacks and a narrowing of the electorate. In spite of attempts to make their triumph permanent, New Orleans reformers gave way to a resurgent Regular Democratic organization, the Choctaw Club, which dominated city politics for the first half of the twentieth century. Mayors Paul Capdevielle and Martin Behrman successfully led the city in an era of commercial expansion, public works, and municipal reform. That leadership persisted …

Spatial Modeling Of Coastal Landscapes: Methodological And Scientific Applications., Mary Louise White Jan 1999

Spatial Modeling Of Coastal Landscapes: Methodological And Scientific Applications., Mary Louise White

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A number of issues related to landscape scale ecological modeling of the wetlands of southern Louisiana are examined in this study. First, using geostatistical methods, a new contour map of the wetland habitats in the Terrebonne basin of southern Louisiana is constructed from data collected in 1994. This map is proposed as the best field verified habitat map of the Terrebonne basin and contains statistical confidence intervals associated with the habitat contours. Second, the problem of how to evaluate the success of a landscape model prediction is investigated. The multiple resolution goodness of fit parameter Ft(k) is evaluated in detail …

Apples And Regional Change: Life And Economy In Tsugaru, Japan., Ann D. Brucklacher Jan 1999

Apples And Regional Change: Life And Economy In Tsugaru, Japan., Ann D. Brucklacher

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this dissertation, I examine aspects of Japan's rural and agricultural restructuring using Aomori Prefecture's apple industry as a focal point. Though using multiple spatial scales, I concentrate most on changes in agriculture and economy in the Tsugaru region, Aomori's main apple-growing region. A historical overview of Tsugaru and its apple industry provides the background necessary for understanding today's circumstances. Archival and ethnographic methods examine modern-day changes and document the views of individual farmers and their families. Located at the northwestern-most tip of Japan's main island, the Tsugaru region was historically one of Japan's most remote and impoverished regions. The …

Musing The Garden: A Poetics Of Place And Emplacement., Scott Parker Smiley Jan 1999

Musing The Garden: A Poetics Of Place And Emplacement., Scott Parker Smiley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A walk through a garden is an immersion into a wealth of sensory and relational experiences of place. Plant varieties, color, texture, flowers, forms, pathways, light, benches, ornaments, and other experiential qualities of place work upon one's consciousness to draw one into intimate contact with the place "Emplacement" is this intimate, immersed engagement with a place, a process and state of being that erodes the boundaries we so often erect between self and environment. Traditional systematic forms of inquiry, based upon the Cartesian idea of an essential separation between object and subject, are not applicable to the study of emplacement …

Religious Art: Reflectors Of Change In The Catholic Church In New Mexico, 1830--1910., Shirley Jean Sands Jan 1999

Religious Art: Reflectors Of Change In The Catholic Church In New Mexico, 1830--1910., Shirley Jean Sands

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In 1846, the United States of America began a war with the Republic of Mexico. When it was over, one of the results was the acquisition of much of current California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, southern Colorado and New Mexico. The region was occupied by Catholic Mexicans, a fact not lost on the American Catholic hierarchy. The result is the sending of a new religious administration and the founding of what would become the Archdiocese of Santa Fe. The clergy sent were French with French notions of civilization, culture, and proper Catholic theology. These views and notions were contrary to those …

Folk Housing In Northeastern Mexico: A Key To Culturogeographic Regionalization., Scott Stuart Brown Jan 1999

Folk Housing In Northeastern Mexico: A Key To Culturogeographic Regionalization., Scott Stuart Brown

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Folk housing is one of the elements of material culture which geographers often employ in understanding the cultural aspects of regional studies. As one of the most obvious features of the cultural landscape, folk housing serves as a tool in the determination of culturogeographic regions, the final objective of this study. In this atomistic regional approach, geometry is the principle feature of interest. In other words, the one-dimensional plan type and the three-dimensional form class are the elements of focus in order to distinguish regionality. As opposed to other sub-systems of structural analysis, geometry, especially house from, distinguishes regions of …

Territoriality And Commerce: Political Conflict Over The Panama Canal In Geographic Perspective., Robert William Aguirre Jan 1999

Territoriality And Commerce: Political Conflict Over The Panama Canal In Geographic Perspective., Robert William Aguirre

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines the recurring conflict between the United States and the Republic of Panama regarding the Canal and the Canal Zone by analyzing three salient geographic issues: first, the extent to which international commerce or national security required the building of a canal in Central America; second, ambiguities arising out of notions of sovereignty and extraterritoriality in United States constitutional law; and third, the political controversies between an inland society and a maritime society in Panama itself The theoretical implications of Edward Fox's work in his geographic history of French politics and the works of Panamanian historians and sociologists …

Holocene Environmental Change In Mainland Southeast Asia: Pollen And Charcoal Records From Cambodia., Andrew Lee Maxwell Jan 1999

Holocene Environmental Change In Mainland Southeast Asia: Pollen And Charcoal Records From Cambodia., Andrew Lee Maxwell

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Major Holocene environmental changes in continental Southeast Asia are reconstructed using proxy data derived from analysis of 14C-dated changes in pollen, microscopic charcoal, and organic/inorganic carbon in sediment cores taken from permanent, closed-basin, volcanic lakes in Ratanakiri Province, northeastern Cambodia. Analysis focuses on the history of monsoon climate and land use, inferred from changes in vegetation, fire regime, and lake conditions. These data provide the first well dated palynological record, covering most of the Holocene and continuous up to the present, from an upland site in mainland Southeast Asia. The record from a 15-meter core retrieved from Yeak Kara Lake, …

Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind: A Gis Study Of Changes In Cemetery Locations In Southeastern Louisiana From An Archaeological And Geographical Perspective, 1930--1997., Cindy Ann Nance Jan 1999

Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind: A Gis Study Of Changes In Cemetery Locations In Southeastern Louisiana From An Archaeological And Geographical Perspective, 1930--1997., Cindy Ann Nance

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Cemeteries in southeastern Louisiana are in varying stages of use---from presently in use and maintained to no longer visible on the surface. The abandonment of traditional cemeteries in southeastern Louisiana illustrates evolving settlement patterns. Earlier settlement patterns were dependent on physiographic and cultural landscape features. As settlement patterns evolve, the preferred locations of cemeteries change. As a recent participant in the nationwide preference for urban-associated Memorial Parks, is Louisiana in the process of abandoning traditional cemetery landscapes? Six factors that contribute to the abandonment of traditional cemeteries from 1930 to 1997 are presented in this study. Evolving communities, demographic shifts, …

The Performance Of Prekindergarten Children On Representational Tasks Across Levels Of Displacement., Emily Flake Smith Jan 1999

The Performance Of Prekindergarten Children On Representational Tasks Across Levels Of Displacement., Emily Flake Smith

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This investigation was guided by Nelson's (1996) experiential theory and the Situational-Discourse-Semantic (SDS) model of Norris and Hoffman (1993, 1997, in press) which was used to establish predictions regarding the representational difficulty of each of the task conditions. Subjects were 32 four-year-old children enrolled in four prekindergarten programs located within a small city in southern Louisiana and represented both lower and middle SES populations. The tasks required subjects to represent knowledge of the bedtime routine, ranging from personal enactments with props through generation of stories and event scripts for hypothetical situations. Performances were analyzed for content in terms of event …

The Miskito Settlement Landscape Of Eastern Honduras, With Emphasis On The Moravian Contribution., Benjamin Farr Tillman Jan 1999

The Miskito Settlement Landscape Of Eastern Honduras, With Emphasis On The Moravian Contribution., Benjamin Farr Tillman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation documents the influence of Moravian missionary activities on the Miskito settlement landscape in eastern Honduras---particularly in the areas of settlement morphology, housing, agriculture, and cemeteries. Upon their arrival to the Mosquito Coast in 1849, the missionaries employed a three pronged approach consisting of proselyting, medical treatment, and education to convert the majority of the indigenous population. The missionaries' resulting influence was a significant component and major cultural force in the development of a distinctive Protestant region within Catholic Central America. Moravian contributions to the settlement landscape in sixty-four Miskito villages of eastern Honduras were documented through field observations …

Folded And Faulted Salt Lake Formation Above The Miocene To Pliocene New Canyon And Clifton Detachment Faults, Malad And Bannock Ranges, Idaho: Field Trip Guide To The Deep Creek Half Graben And Environs, Susanne U. Janecke, J. C. Evans

Geosciences Faculty Publications

Previous studies identified a major detachment terrane in southeast Idaho in the Oxford Ridge area of the Bannock Range. This study shows that these top-to-the-WSW detachment faults are late Cenozoic in age, not Mesozoic to early Tertiary as previously inferred. Provenance and facies patterns in the Miocene-Pliocene Salt Lake Formation in the Deep Creek supradetachment basin show that deposition was syntectonic to slip on the detachment faults. The highly extended Bannock detachment terrane likely persists north to the Snake River Plain and south into Utah. The breakaway for this system lies in the Portneuf Range to the east. At least …

Postcolonial Imaginaries: Alternative Development Or Alternatives To Development?, Tayyab Mahmud Jan 1999

Postcolonial Imaginaries: Alternative Development Or Alternatives To Development?, Tayyab Mahmud

Faculty Articles

This review essay critically interrogates the discourse and practice of development. It is argued that models of alternative development remain imprisoned in the ontological categories of the development project, an ideological and institutional devise to consolidate the hegemony of the West over the rest. Finally, a framework to explore alternatives to development is suggested.

Private Ordering At The World's First Futures Exchange, Mark D. West Jan 1999

Private Ordering At The World's First Futures Exchange, Mark D. West

Michigan Law Review

Modern derivative securities - financial instruments whose value is linked to or "derived" from some other asset - are often sophisticated, complex, and subject to a variety of rules and regulations. The same is true of the derivative instruments traded at the world's first organized futures exchange, the Dojima Rice Exchange in Osaka, Japan, where trade flourished for nearly 300 years, from the late seventeenth century until shortly before World War II. This Article analyzes Dojima's organization, efficiency, and amalgam of legal and extralegal rules. In doing so, it contributes to a growing body of literature on commercial self-regulation while …

The Darkest Domain: Deference, Judicial Review, And The Bill Of Rights, Daniel J. Solove Jan 1999

The Darkest Domain: Deference, Judicial Review, And The Bill Of Rights, Daniel J. Solove

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Deference presents one of the greatest threats to liberalism in the modern age, undermining judicial review for fundamental constitutional rights such as freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and due process. In contrast to existing critiques which dismiss deference as an ideological tool wielded by conservative judges, this article explores deference more systematically and rigorously, addressing it at its conceptual underpinnings. Deference has a strong conceptual backbone rooted in the long-accepted principle that the judiciary must avoid doing what was done in Lochner - the substitution of judicial judgment for that of the policymaker or legislature. The article argues that …
