The Precepts Of Zion And Joseph Smith's City Of Zion Plan: Major Influences For The Planning Of Nauvoo, Marjorie E. Eddy Jan 1999

The Precepts Of Zion And Joseph Smith's City Of Zion Plan: Major Influences For The Planning Of Nauvoo, Marjorie E. Eddy

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis addresses the archaeological question of the relationship between city planning and belief systems. It examines the extent to which the city plan of Nauvoo, Illinois, was influenced by the four precepts of Zion as outlined by Joseph Smith, the first President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. These precepts are considered as unity, order, economic equality, and leadership. The City of Zion plan as developed by Joseph Smith was the basis for many cities, including Nauvoo. The Zion plan is examined to determine the influences of the four precepts of Zion on city planning. Specifically, …

The Mormon Influence On The Political Geography Of The West, Michael Madsen Jan 1999

The Mormon Influence On The Political Geography Of The West, Michael Madsen

Theses and Dissertations

The vast colonization of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or Mormons, in the nineteenth century had a profund impact on the populating, culture, economy, and environment of much of the American West. This thesis examines the political geographic influence of the Mormons in the West and, more specifically, in the lands ceded by Mexico to the United States in 1848. This land comprises all or portions of the following states: California, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico.
The original organization of the Mexican Cession at the hands of Congress in 1850 was drastically influenced by …

Tertiary Bats (Mammalia: Chiroptera) From Northern Nebraska, Nicholas J. Czaplewski, Bruce E. Bailey, Richard G. Corner Jan 1999

Tertiary Bats (Mammalia: Chiroptera) From Northern Nebraska, Nicholas J. Czaplewski, Bruce E. Bailey, Richard G. Corner

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Scarce remains of bats are reported from five localities in northern Nebraska in which other kinds of vertebrates are much more common. ?Oligomyotis or ?Myotis, possibly of an undescribed species, is represented by fragments of jaws and humeri from an early Arikareean (late Oligocene) locality in Dawes County. Several toothless jaw fragments from the late Hemingfordian (middle Miocene) Companion Quarry in Sioux County represent an indeterminate microchiropteran. An indeterminate species of Myotis was encountered in the middle Clarendonian (late Miocene) Ashfall site in Antelope County. A hairy-tailed bat, Lasiurus sp. indet., occurred in late Clarendonian (late Miocene) …

The Community Reinvestment Act: Questionable Premises And Perverse Incentives, Vincent D. Rougeau, Keith N. Hylton Jan 1999

The Community Reinvestment Act: Questionable Premises And Perverse Incentives, Vincent D. Rougeau, Keith N. Hylton

Journal Articles

Having just passed the twentieth anniversary of the enactment of the Community Reinvestment Act ("CRA" or "Act"), this is an appropriate time to take stock of the effectiveness of the legislation and to consider whether it continues to be useful as a tool for addressing the problems of neighborhood decline and discrimination in the lending market. Although discrimination in lending and the decline of certain inner-city neighborhoods is a problem that the CRA has not been able to solve, most observers would agree that the situation has improved since the mid-1970s. In particular, there has been notable progress toward the …

Dam Nation: A Geographic Census Of American Dams And Their Large-Scale Hydrologic Impacts, William L. Graf Jan 1999

Dam Nation: A Geographic Census Of American Dams And Their Large-Scale Hydrologic Impacts, William L. Graf

Faculty Publications

Newly available data indicate that darns fragment the fluvial system of the continental United States and that their impact on river discharge is several times greater than impacts deemed likely as a result of global climate change. The 75,000 dams in the continental United States are capable of storing a volume of water almost equaling one year's mean runoff, but there is considerable geographic variation in potential surface water impacts. In some western mountain and plains regions, darns can store more than 3 year's runoff, while in the Northeast and Northwest, storage is as little as 25% of the annual …

Transnational Critical Race Scholarship: Transcending Ethnic And National Chauvinism In The Era Of Globalization, Ibrahim J. Gassama Jan 1999

Transnational Critical Race Scholarship: Transcending Ethnic And National Chauvinism In The Era Of Globalization, Ibrahim J. Gassama

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

Eric Yamamoto's article, Critical Race Praxis: Race Theory and Political Lawyering Practice in Post-Civil Rights America, brings a needed perspective to scholarship seeking to place domestic social justice struggles within the context of a broader and more complex mix of forces at play. While Yamamoto does not highlight a critical transnational perspective in this particular article, he writes from a perspective that presumes transnational analysis is essential in making sense of the socio-economic and political forces affecting our lives as individuals and members of multiple, intersecting communities. The local, the national, and the international are inextricably bound and present …

Titanium Hoes? Farmers, Wealth And Higher Yields In Western Sudan, Michael Kevane Jan 1999

Titanium Hoes? Farmers, Wealth And Higher Yields In Western Sudan, Michael Kevane

Economics

Village-level data from western Sudan cast doubt on the universal applicability of an inverse relationship between farm wealth and production per hectare, and the attendant explanation of imperfect labor markets. Wealthy farmers have higher levels of output per hectare; they use more labor per hectare. Insecurity in renting land, financing constraints and the absence of insurance are the vital elements in explanations of the observed pattern of variation in yields. Examination of the performance of land rental, credit and insurance markets in western Sudan suggest that insurance and financing constraints are the crucial market failures.

A Woman's Field Is Made At Night: Gendered Land Rights And Norms In Burkina Faso, Michael Kevane, Leslie C. Gray Jan 1999

A Woman's Field Is Made At Night: Gendered Land Rights And Norms In Burkina Faso, Michael Kevane, Leslie C. Gray

Economics

Gendered social norms and institutions are important determinants of agricultural activities in southwestern Burkina Faso. This paper argues that gendered land tenure, in particular, has effects on equity and efficiency. The usual view of women as holders of secondary, or indirect, rights to land must be supplemented by a more nuanced understanding of tenure. Women's rights are in fact considerably more complex than the simple right to fields from their husbands. First, women's rights to property obtained from men may be coupled with other rights and obligations. In many ethnic groups, women have share rights to the harvest of their …

Juvenile Transfers In Florida: The Worst Of The Worst?, Lonn Lanza-Kaduce, Charles E. Frazier, Donna M. Bishop

University of Florida Journal of Law & Public Policy

The purpose of this article is to examine what is needed to assess the issues of fairness and effectiveness, which are central to the rationales underpinning transfer policies. We start by considering the adequacy of the data that most often used to learn about transfer. We then report the findings from an in-depth study of local records. This field research illustrates how complex information gathering is on matters relevant to transfer. We then use the more detailed processing information gained from our study of local records to profile transfer cases and assess the comparability between criminal court transfers and their …

Protecting Communication Departments: Reflections On The Nebraska Experience, Ronald Lee, William J. Seiler Jan 1999

Protecting Communication Departments: Reflections On The Nebraska Experience, Ronald Lee, William J. Seiler

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

Eight years ago, in the first week of the 1991 fall semester, the Acting Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs announced a series of vertical budget cuts that included the elimination of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s department of Speech Communication (now Communication Studies). Over the next seven months the department fought against the proposed action. In March 1992, the Budget Reduction Review Committee voted against the Vice Chancellor’s recommendation. Later in the month, the Academic Planning Committee also voted to rescind the budget cutting measure.

These actions ended the battle and assured the continuation of the department. In an earlier …

Experimental Infections Of Muskoxen (Ovibos Moschatus) And Domestic Sheep With Umingmakstrongylus Pallikuukensis (Nematoda: Protostrongylidae): Parasite Development, Population Structure, And Pathology, Susan J. Kutz, Eric P. Hoberg, Lydden Polley Jan 1999

Experimental Infections Of Muskoxen (Ovibos Moschatus) And Domestic Sheep With Umingmakstrongylus Pallikuukensis (Nematoda: Protostrongylidae): Parasite Development, Population Structure, And Pathology, Susan J. Kutz, Eric P. Hoberg, Lydden Polley

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Three captive muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus) were successfully infected with third-stage larvae of Umingmakstrongylus pallikuukensis digested or emerged from the slugs Deroceras reticulatum and D. laeve, for the first time completing the life cycle of this parasite under experimental conditions. The course of parasite development and patency was followed for 26 months post infection (p.i.) using fecal examinations and radiography. The prepatent periods in two of the muskoxen were 91 and 95 days and the patent period in one extended for 23 months. Larval production peaked 13–14 months p.i. On postmortem of two of the muskoxen at months …

Octamer-Based Genome Scanning Distinguishes A Unique Subpopulation Of Escherichia Coli O157:H7 Strains In Cattle, Jaehyoung Kim, Andrew K. Benson Jan 1999

Octamer-Based Genome Scanning Distinguishes A Unique Subpopulation Of Escherichia Coli O157:H7 Strains In Cattle, Jaehyoung Kim, Andrew K. Benson

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Multilocus-genotyping methods have shown that Escherichia coli O157:H7 is a geographically disseminated clone. However, highresolution methods such as pulse-field gel electrophoresis demonstrate significant genomic diversity among different isolates. To assess the genetic relationship of human and bovine isolates of E. coli O157:H7 in detail, we have developed an octamer-based genome-scanning methodology, which compares the distance between over-represented, strand-biased octamers that occur in the genome. Comparison of octamer-based genome-scanning products derived from >1 megabase of the genome demonstrated the existence of two distinct lineages of E. coli O157:H7 that are disseminated within the United States. Human and bovine isolates are nonrandomly …

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

William V. (Bill) Sliter, an internationally known micropaleontologist and research geologist for the U.S. Geological Survey, passed away suddenly, October, 1997, while talking to a colleague in his office. In his honor, B. Huber, T. Bralower, and M. Leckie organized a keynote symposium ‘‘Paleoecological and Geochemical Signatures of Cretaceous Anoxic Events’’ at the 1998 annual meeting of the Geological Society of America in Toronto, Canada. This theme issue of the Journal of Foraminiferal Research contains the published papers from the symposium and is dedicated to his memory.
