Variability Of Tourist Attraction On An International Boundary: Sonora, Mexico Border Towns, Daniel D. Arreola, Kenneth Madsen Jan 1999

Variability Of Tourist Attraction On An International Boundary: Sonora, Mexico Border Towns, Daniel D. Arreola, Kenneth Madsen

Visions in Leisure and Business

This paper explores how and why tourism and tourist districts in border towns vary along a single international boundary. A perception about Mexican border tourism holds that the boundary itself is the primary stimulus to development. While almost every Mexican border town has some tourist function, the nature and extent of that activity will vary with a host of exogenous factors. We argue that Mexican border city tourism is largely a function of these diverse external factors more than simply a presence on the international boundary. Successful tourism in the Mexican border cities is linked to historic advantage and age …

North-South Divide: The Role Of The Border In Tourism To Northern Ireland, Stephen Boyd Jan 1999

North-South Divide: The Role Of The Border In Tourism To Northern Ireland, Stephen Boyd

Visions in Leisure and Business

Using the case study of the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, this paper addresses a number of key issues related to borders and tourism: attractivity and co-operation. Visitor data from 1994 to 1997, reveals that the border itself does not function as a tourist attraction, but rather there is sufficient attraction within what is identified in the paper as a border zone. Attention is given to examining heritage attractions (those receiving over 5000 per year, and those that are free) as the position taken in the paper is that heritage tourism best encapsulates the experience available …

Cross-Border Trips By Canadians And Americans And The Differential Impact Of The Border, Livio Di Matteo Jan 1999

Cross-Border Trips By Canadians And Americans And The Differential Impact Of The Border, Livio Di Matteo

Visions in Leisure and Business

Same day automobile trips have been used as a barometer of cross-border shopping between Canada and the United States. The determinants of same day automobile crossborder trips by Canadians and Americans are examined using regression analysis and the results find that key determinants are lagged trips, per capita income, the real exchange rate and seasonal factors. The coefficient on lagged trips is larger for Canada than for the United States suggesting that, over time, Canadians adjust more rapidly to the desired number of trips than Americans. More intriguing is the fact that while income is positive for Canadian same day …

Computer Use In K-12 Classrooms, Terry J. Shaw

Graduate Research Papers

This project has two components: a survey of educators to determine how technology is being used in K-12 classrooms and a web site of software, Internet sites, and contact person in each grade level and subject area. To discover the use of technology in the K-12 classroom, a survey was sent to 3,500 educators within the Area Education Agency 7 boundaries. The results of the survey have been published on a website and will serve as a place for teachers seeking guidance on what software and Internet sites are considered "best practice." The website is divided by academic disciplines and …

The Confusion Of Causes And Reasons In Forensic Psychology: Deconstructing Mens Rea And Other Mental Events, Joel R. Cornwell Jan 1999

The Confusion Of Causes And Reasons In Forensic Psychology: Deconstructing Mens Rea And Other Mental Events, Joel R. Cornwell

University of Richmond Law Review

The public perception that criminal conduct is increasingly excused on psychological grounds, notwithstanding a markedly small statistical success rate of diminished capacity defenses, evinces misplaced frustration over a broader cultural reluctance or inability to assign moral blame. Psychology is seen as feeding a kind of determinism that rationalizes evil behavior and precludes retributive punishment as a matter of scientific principle. This perception is accurate to the degree that it reveals our legal system's fundamental confusion of purposes in judging and explaining criminal behavior. This confusion is engendered by the indeterminacy of language, which entangles the verificationist mode and purpose of …

Garfield County Resident Perceptions Of The Indirect Effects Of The 2002 Winter Olympics, Cary Michael Deccio Jan 1999

Garfield County Resident Perceptions Of The Indirect Effects Of The 2002 Winter Olympics, Cary Michael Deccio

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study examined rural resident perceptions of a nearby mega-event. Tourism leaders can gauge resident perceptions and thereby plan development in conjunction with the local people, not in spite of them; It is anticipated that the 2002 Winter Olympics will have some impact on Garfield County, Utah. Using social exchange theory, the study sought to better understand public sentiment regarding the upcoming mega-event. Certain resident values were examined in relation to tourism; The results show that some residents perceive that the Olympics will bring opportunities, but most residents do not anticipate any impact from the event. Residents who are economically …

Toward A Geography Of Trade Costs , David Hummels Jan 1999

Toward A Geography Of Trade Costs , David Hummels

GTAP Working Papers Archive

What are the barriers that separate nations? While recent work provides intriguing clues, we have remarkably little concrete evidence as to the nature, size, and shape of barriers. This paper offers direct and indirect evidence on trade barriers, moving us toward a comprehensive geography of trade costs. There are three main contributions.

One, we provide detailed data on freight rates for a number of importers. Rates vary substantially over exporters, and aggregate expenditures on freight are at the low end of the observed range. This suggests import choices are made so as to minimize transportation costs. Two, we estimate the …
