The Herbert Pickering Lewis Collection Of Talavera Poblano, Lynn Carlson

Theses

This thesis describes a one hundred and seventy-nine piece collection of ceramics, the Herbert Pickering Lewis Collection at the Art Institute of Chicago. The collection arrived in Chicago seventy-five years ago. The objects were made in Mexico.

Mexico, once home to the deities, sports and commerce of the Aztec, Maya and Olmec civilizations, was settled by Europeans early in the sixteenth century

. . . and New Spain became the first Spanish American viceroyalty, eventually including all of ancient Mesoamerica, northern Mexico, the Caribbean and most of the south-western USA (see Hoggart, page 230).

One Of Tennessee's Women, Jeanne Chinn Jan 1999

One Of Tennessee's Women, Jeanne Chinn

Theses

The Library of Congress lists over eighty books that deal exclusively with Tennessee Williams. A vast number of these books cover anecdotal information about Tennessee's personal life, experiences, and relationships through his emotionally turbulent life. A great deal of biographical material presents conflicting accounts and many authors claim to have " the real story'' on Tennessee's life and loves.

If the reader is interested in titillating tidbits on Tennessee, this is not the paper to read. However, Mr. Tennessee Williams wrote from bis heart and his life experiences. Because of this, attention needs to be paid to how he drew …

Aggression And School Performance Among Seventh-Grade Students Enrolled In A Midwestern Suburban Middle School: A Social-Cognitive Behavioral Perspective, Gayle G. Anderson

Theses

Aggressive tendencies constitute a consistent behavioral pattern that spans early childhood through preadolescence, adolescence, and adulthood. Researchers have linked high levels of preadolescent aggression with adolescent adjustment problems in school, the home, and community. This study explored the relationship between aggression levels and school performance among a sample of seventh-grade students. Thirty subjects were randomly selected from a seventh-grade class (n=230) located in a midwestern suburban middle school. Behavior and academic performance was associated with aggression levels as measured by the Missouri Children's Behavior Checklist (MCBC) among this sample. Academic performance, as measured by Grade Point Average (GPA) was negatively …

Freedom Of The Press In Democratic Countries, Chiao-Yen Lin

Theses

Ever since freedom of the press was established along with the democratic system, how much limitation to impose on free press has been an arguable issue. This study discusses freedom of press from authoritarian to libertarian systems. Free press indeed is an inalienable right in democracy; however, the imperfections under liberalism and capitalism need to be attended and reviewed. The purpose in this study is to develop guidelines to retain respectable journalism and to elevate the ethics of the press.

Research cases relative to the most common problem-invasion of privacy-establish one area of irresponsibility of the press in the contemporary …

Faculty Publications

This study investigated the effects of direct instruction and an environmentally designed instructional strategy on the product and process characteristics of kindergarten and second grade children in the standing long jump. One hundred and sixteen kindergarten and second grade students participated in the study and were assigned to a 3-day, 60-trial, direct instruction group or a 3-day, 60-trial, environmentally designed instruction group. A pretest, posttest, and retention test were administered in a flat mat testing condition and one designed to elicit performance through the testing environment (the swamp). Both instructional intervention groups were different from the control group at the …

The Displacement Of Jewish Identity In Stefan Zweig's "Buchmendel", Ken Frieden Jan 1999

The Displacement Of Jewish Identity In Stefan Zweig's "Buchmendel", Ken Frieden

Religion - All Scholarship

IN THE STORY "BUCHMENDEL" ( 1929), Stefan Zweig represents Jewish identity
in Vienna as it is displaced. eclipsed, and then destroyed. Yet the narrator.
a man of the world much like Zweig himself. does not mourn this process of
ethnic effacement. Instead, he bemoans the associated destruction of literary
culture at !arge and seems unconcerned about the implications for Jews in
Vienna or elsewhere. Like other residents of Vienna during the First World
War, the urbane postwar narrator even shows a measure of unexamined xenophobia, which is surprising in light of the nesh-and-blood author's Jewish ethnicity and cosmopolitanism. Because the …

Electronic Stacks: Using Web Sources In Reference Service, Di Su

Publications and Research

The awareness of Web sources in reference service has risen in recent years, as many reference librarians have become more Internet-minded. During the reference process, we often ask ourselves: can this question be answered by using the Web? The use of Web sources is expanding the amount of available reference information, enhancing individual libraries’ collection, and hence, providing better user service. There are many benefits in using the Web sources in reference service. There are also some drawbacks. Some useful Web sources are reviewed. The Web, when used properly, provides reference librarians with a valuable resource option to help improve …

Role Of Iron, Light, And Silicate In Controlling Algal Biomass In Subantarctic Waters Se Of New Zealand, Robert Michael Mckay, Philip Boyd, Julie Laroche, Mark Gall, Russell Frew

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Phytoplankton processes in subantarctic (SA) waters southeast of New Zealand were studied during austral autumn and spring 1997. Chlorophyll a (0.2–0.3 μg L−1) and primary production (350–650 mg C m−2 d−1) were dominated by cells μm (cyanobacteria) in both seasons. The photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (Fυ/Fm) of cells was low (0.3), indicating physiological stress. Dissolved Fe (DFe) levels in surface waters were subnanomolar, and the molecular marker flavodoxin indicated that cells were iron stressed. In contrast, Subtropical Convergence (STC) and subtropical waters had higher algal biomass/production levels, particularly …
