The Fact And Fiction Of Vikings In America, Karri L. Springer Jan 1999

The Fact And Fiction Of Vikings In America, Karri L. Springer

Nebraska Anthropologist

Many people do not fully understand the stories, history, archaeology or evidence for Viking presence in North America. This paper evaluates the stories against the scientific evidence found to date. Archaeologists, although qualified to discuss all sides of the arguments, rarely do, because of the lack of career rewards for doing so. However, the problems associated with hoaxes should be important to all archaeologists interested in maintaining credibility with the public. Viking legends are well suited for such evaluation. The Kensington runestone hoax is emphasized in this evaluation while other Viking hoaxes are overviewed. Relevant evidence from archaeological sites in …

Yellow Powder Yellow Lungs, Meghan Sittler

Nebraska Anthropologist

Uranium mining began on the Navajo Reservation during World War II and continued for several years following the war. Many components of uranium mining operations and policies have left a trail of serious, social, physical, cultural, and environmental consequences which have impacted, and continue to impact the people of the Navajo culture. Each of these ramifications will be discussed through the incorporation of Navajo beliefs, and social organization, which have further compounded the effects of the United States government's exploitation of uranium and the Navajo people.

The Diminishing Sphere Of The Cooperative Virtues In American Law And Society, Ana M. Novoa Jan 1999

The Diminishing Sphere Of The Cooperative Virtues In American Law And Society, Ana M. Novoa

Faculty Articles

Exploration of destructive developments in American law and society show that family law is completely askew. Although family law deals with the most intimate and basic personal relationships, it applies a legal process based on autonomous individual public and private economic rights to those intimate relational realities. It is a hallowed expression of male virtues and a paradigmatic example of the use of the law to protect vested interests and shape society, rather than a reflection of reality.

The split between the private/family/female and the public/business/male spheres of the nineteenth century created the separation of competitive attributes, virtues, and vices …

A Geomorphology Of Megaliths: Neolithic Landscapes In The Alto Alentejo, Portugal, Gregory A. Pope, Vera C. Miranda Jan 1999

A Geomorphology Of Megaliths: Neolithic Landscapes In The Alto Alentejo, Portugal, Gregory A. Pope, Vera C. Miranda

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The Alentejo region of Portugal is known for a high concentration of Neolithic-aged megalithic monuments: tombs (dolmens or antas) and ceremonial features such as standing stones (menhirs) and stone circles (cromleques). Concentrations of these monuments tend to be found on or near weathered granite terrains. Unloading slabs and remnant corestones appear to be the stones of preference for megalith makers in the Alentejo district of Portugal. Some of the stones may have been imported from distant sources, but most appear to be of local origin. In general, most stones do not appear to have been altered much from their original …

Juvenile Crime And Punishment: An Analysis Of The "Get Tough" Approach, Shannon F. Mclatchey Jan 1999

Juvenile Crime And Punishment: An Analysis Of The "Get Tough" Approach, Shannon F. Mclatchey

University of Florida Journal of Law & Public Policy

The purpose of this note is to explore the current state of the juvenile justice system and its “get tough on juvenile crime” approach, as well as some alternatives to the current system. Part II examines the history of the juvenile court, the philosophy behind the creation of a separate system for juvenile offenders, and two U.S. Supreme Court cases that altered the nature of the juvenile court. Part III utilizes recent cases to illustrate the methods by which juveniles are transferred to adult court. Part IV discusses the problems and controversies surrounding transfer of juveniles to adult court. Part …

Off On The Right Foot, John W. Welch

BYU Studies

When I was appointed editor of BYU Studies in 1991, I was keenly aware of the sterling, scholarly reputation that this journal had won for itself since its inception in 1959. My hope was to build on that solid foundation, which had been put clearly in place right from the journal's earliest days.

A Touch Of Refinement: Pioneer Graining, Doris R. Dant

Visitors to the Salt Lake Tabernacle are often stunned to learn that the pillars supporting the gallery are not marble but are pine painted to look like marble and that the "oak" benches and organ case are also pine with simulated oak graining. The Tabernacle woodwork and furniture are the most visible reminders of the practice of graining, a technique widely used in Utah Territory's furniture to imitate the look of marble, hardwood, and even leather.
