Financial Characteristics Of Takeover Targets In The Gaming Industry, Seung Jai Yuh Jan 1999

Financial Characteristics Of Takeover Targets In The Gaming Industry, Seung Jai Yuh

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Forty-five takeover activities took place from 1989 to 1999. Decisions in takeovers may be affected by financial or non-financial factors. Since non-financial factors are hard to measure and quantify for analysis, this study investigates the financial characteristics of takeover target firms in the gaming industry; Logistic regression analysis was employed because the dependent variable of this study is dichotomous. By the stepwise selection procedure, six variables were identified in this study. These include size, profitability, liquidity, leverage, capital expenditure, cash reserve capacity, operational efficiency and returns on invested capital. The takeover likelihood in the gaming industry is found to be …

Community-Based Corrections: Offender Characteristics And Success In A Halfway House, Ana Maria Del Carmen Gutierrez Jan 1999

Community-Based Corrections: Offender Characteristics And Success In A Halfway House, Ana Maria Del Carmen Gutierrez

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Prison crowding and tight correctional budgets over the past decade have sparked renewed interest in alternative or community-based sentencing options. These non-incarcerative sentences hold the potential for both reining in skyrocketing costs and also providing a more effective setting for rehabilitative interventions. One type of community-based program is the halfway house. Halfway houses are most often used to ease the transition of offenders from the prison to the community by providing temporary housing, job placement assistance, and other services. In addition, in many jurisdictions courts are sentencing offenders directly to halfway houses as a part of the conditions of probation. …

Quality Of Life Amidst The Lights Of Las Vegas, Terri Lynn Hicks Jan 1999

Quality Of Life Amidst The Lights Of Las Vegas, Terri Lynn Hicks

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Recent literature on quality of life indicators and sustainability has focused on quantifiable measurements, not qualitative. In actuality, the whole concept of quality of life is a subjective valuation of a myriad of issues by individuals. The purpose of this thesis, based on the testing of a model, is to identify these subjective quality of life variables and determine which variables are currently significant to residents in Southern Nevada. This thesis determines if quality of life, measured by individual respondents overall satisfaction with living in Southern Nevada, is a function of different social characteristics by looking at the following community …

Descriptive Experience Sampling Of Individuals With Symptoms Of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Daniela S Hugelshofer Jan 1999

Descriptive Experience Sampling Of Individuals With Symptoms Of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Daniela S Hugelshofer

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study employed the Descriptive Experience Sampling method to investigate the inner experiences of three individuals with symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and one non-OCD-symptom participant. Participants were provided with a random-interval generator (beeper) and were asked to "freeze" the aspects of their inner experience at the moment of the beep and record this experience in a notebook. Participants met with the investigators within 24 hours to discuss each of these sampled moments in detail. Salient characteristics were identified for each participant. Characteristics of inner experience were found to be shared across subjects: OCD-symptom participants were found to have a …

Metafiction In The Work Of Tim O'Brien, Michael Patrick Kimmet Jan 1999

Metafiction In The Work Of Tim O'Brien, Michael Patrick Kimmet

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis explores Tim O'Brien's ideas on the definition of fiction, memory, imagination, the role they play in the creative process, and the functions that fiction has in the world at large. This will be explored through close examination of O'Brien's self-referential narrative technique. This thesis will answer three questions: using O'Brien's work as a single framework for discovery, whether a definition of fiction can be reached; whether an idea of what causes the impulse to tell stories be ascertained; and if the primary functions that stories serve be discovered. These questions will be explored through extensive close reading of …

A Curriculum Needs Assessment: Graduate Study For Corporate And Research Chefs, Gary Arthur Brant

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study addressed the need of training and education, at a Master's degree level, for corporate and research chefs. Actual competencies, the importance of those competencies and the education needed for proficiency in those competencies was a secondary objective of the study. Foodservice professionals who are current members of the American Culinary Federation and the Research Chefs Association were selected as respondents. A total of 150 respondents returned completed survey forms used for data analysis in this study. Responses indicated a definite need for a program of this nature, although the importance of several specific competencies did not fall within …

Social Security Reform: Improving Benefit Adequacy And Economic Security For Women, Timothy M. Smeeding Jan 1999

Social Security Reform: Improving Benefit Adequacy And Economic Security For Women, Timothy M. Smeeding

Center for Policy Research

This policy brief is designed to raise awareness of the current and future economic circumstances of older women, and the ways in which Social Security reform can help alleviate their unmet needs. It considers the gaps in benefit adequacy and economic security that are not addressed by current Social Security reform proposals and then suggests a series of modest, low-cost reforms to help close these gaps. If our proposals are adopted, Social Security reform will not only close the long-run financial deficit, but it will also greatly reduce the future poverty status of older women, particularly those who live alone. …

The Role Of Relative Cohort Size And Relative Income In The Demographic Transition, Diane J. Macunovich Jan 1999

The Role Of Relative Cohort Size And Relative Income In The Demographic Transition, Diane J. Macunovich

Center for Policy Research

This paper summarizes the results of other analyses by the author with regard to the importance of relative cohort size (RCS) in determining male relative income (the income of young adults relative to prime-age workers) and general patterns of economic growth, and in turn influencing fertility in the currently more-developed nations. It then goes on to demonstrate that these same effects appear to have been operating in all of the 100-odd nations which have experienced the fertility transition since 1950. Parameter estimates based on the experience of all 189 countries identified by the United Nations between 1950 and 1995 are …

Testing The Stability Of A Production Function With Urbanization As A Shift Factor: An Application Of Non-Stationary Panel Data Techniques, Suzanne Mccoskey, Chihwa Kao Jan 1999

Testing The Stability Of A Production Function With Urbanization As A Shift Factor: An Application Of Non-Stationary Panel Data Techniques, Suzanne Mccoskey, Chihwa Kao

Center for Policy Research

Urban economists have long sought to explain the relationship between urbanization levels and output. In this paper we revisit this question and test the long-run stability of a production function with urbanization using non-stationary panel data techniques. Our results show that a long-run relationship between urbanization output per worker and capital per worker cannot be rejected for either our sample of 30 developing countries or our sample of 22 developed countries. In addition, we estimate the long-run average effects on GDPW of urbanization and capital. These results offer newer insights and potential for dynamic urban models than the simple cross-section …

A Monte Carlo Comparison Of Tests For Cointegration In Panel Data, Chihwa Kao Jan 1999

A Monte Carlo Comparison Of Tests For Cointegration In Panel Data, Chihwa Kao

Center for Policy Research

This paper surveys recent developments and provides Monte Carlo comparison on various tests proposed for cointegration in panel data. In particular, tests for two panel models, varying intercepts and varying slopes, and varying intercepts and common slopes are presented from the literature with a total of seven tests being simulated. In all cases, results on empirical size and size-adjusted power are given.

On The Estimation And Inference Of A Cointegrated Regression In Panel Data, Chihwa Kao Jan 1999

On The Estimation And Inference Of A Cointegrated Regression In Panel Data, Chihwa Kao

Center for Policy Research

The main contribution of this paper is to add to the literature by suggesting a dynamic OLS (DOLS) estimator and providing a serious comparison of the finite sample properties of the OLS, fully modified OLS (FMOLS), and DOLS estimators in panel cointegrated regression models. Monte Carlo results illustrate the sampling behavior of the proposed estimators and show that (1) the OLS estimator has a non-negligible bias in finite samples, (2) the FMOLS estimator does not improve over the OLS estimator in general, and (3) the DOLS outperforms both the OLS and FMOLS estimators.

Dietary Intake And Gallbladder Disease: A Review, Marilyn Tseng, James E. Everhart, Robert S. Sandler Jan 1999

Dietary Intake And Gallbladder Disease: A Review, Marilyn Tseng, James E. Everhart, Robert S. Sandler

Kinesiology and Public Health

Objective: Dietary intake has long been looked upon as a potentially modifiable risk factor for gallbladder disease (GBD), here defined as either having gallstones or having had surgery for gallstones. This paper reviews the epidemiological evidence for an association between dietary intake and GBD, focusing on six dietary factors that have received the most attention in studies in this area: energy intake, fatty acids, cholesterol, carbohydrates and fibre, calcium and alcohol. The objectives of this review are to evaluate the potential usefulness of altering the diet to prevent GBD and to consider future research in this area. Design: We reviewed …

Locational Differences In The Underlying Characteristics Of Poverty, Brian Cushing, Buhong Zheng Jan 1999

Locational Differences In The Underlying Characteristics Of Poverty, Brian Cushing, Buhong Zheng

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

We explore how poverty differs between urban and rural areas and among U.S. regions, using metropolitan versus nonmetropolitan to proxy urban versus rural. Our study focuses on social and demographic characteristics, rather than economic characteristics. We are concerned with which personal characteristics appear to increase the risk of poverty, regardless of whether these characteristics manifest themselves through unemployment, low-wage employment, or some other economic problem that ultimately leads to poverty. Using data for the working-age population from the one percent Public Use Microdata Sample of the 1990 Census of Population and Housing, we find significant differences in predictors of …

Actively Mode-Locked P-Ge Laser In Faraday Configuration, A. V. Muravjov, S. H. Withers, R. C. Strijbos, S. G. Pavlov, V. N. Shastin, R. E. Peale

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Active mode locking of the far-infrared p-Ge laser has been achieved in the Faraday configuration of electric and magnetic fields applied to the laser crystal. The laser generates 200 ps pulses of 80-110 cm(-1) radiation with a laser-cavity roundtrip frequency of 454 MHz. The mechanism of gain modulation by the external rf electric field is based on induced electric-field gradients inside the active crystal and requires less rf power than was found previously for Voigt geometry.

A Study Of Consumer Protection Law In Hong Kong, Pui Ling Lee, Chi Kwan Chung Jan 1999

A Study Of Consumer Protection Law In Hong Kong, Pui Ling Lee, Chi Kwan Chung

Bachelor Degree - Accountancy - Final Year Project

Consumption of goods and services is inevitable in our daily life. So consumer protection is essential for every consumer. However, the existing consumer protection system in Hong Kong is not comprehensive enough to protect consumers. Thus, this project concentrates on studying the consumer protection law in Hong Kong to evaluate its sufficiency for protecting consumers. Besides, we also investigate the Hong Kong consumer protection system, including the functions and powers of the Consumer Council, and make compare it with Australia’s consumer protection system.

The Consumer Council is the only statutory consumer protection body in Hong Kong. It is not an …

Bromoxynil And Pyrithiobac Weed Control Systems In Transgenic Bxn Cotton., Christopher Brett Corkern Jan 1999

Bromoxynil And Pyrithiobac Weed Control Systems In Transgenic Bxn Cotton., Christopher Brett Corkern

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Field studies conducted in 1996 through 1998 evaluated grass control with the graminicides clethodim, fluazifop-P, quizalofop-P, and sethoxydim alone and in combination with bromoxynil. Sequential application of bromoxynil at 1.7 kg ai/ha 7, 3, and 1 day (d) before or 1, 3, and 7 d after each graminicide reduced antagonism of rhizome johnsongrass [Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers.] control when compared with bromoxynil plus clethodim, fluazifop-P, or quizalofop-P. Antagonism of johnsongrass control associated with bromoxynil and graminicide mixtures reduced cotton yield 17%. A 3 d or greater interval between bromoxynil and graminicide application was necessary to maximize cotton yield. Bromoxynil at …
