Understanding Barriers To Breast Cancer Screening Among Rural Women In South Carolina: A Qualitative Study Using The Idea Model, Israt Jahan
All Theses
Breast cancer screening rates remain low among rural women in South Carolina, leading to higher incidences of late-stage cancer diagnosis. This qualitative study used semi-structured interviews to investigate reasons why many women delay or avoid screenings, even when free screening programs such as the Best Chance Network are available in South Carolina. Guided by the IDEA model, the study explored how women interpret cancer risk, how they seek and trust cancer information, how they understand screening explanations, and what barriers affect their ability to take action. Participants described fear of pain, fear of diagnosis, personal relevance, confusion about the screening …
Redefining The Teenager: Liminality And The Dystopian Young Adult Heroine Who Overthrows The Government To Save The Child And Preserve Innocence, Ashtyn Zavala
All Theses
The teen girl figure has swept young adult dystopian fiction from 2008 onward, continuously overthrowing governments and acting outside of her socially defined roles. This stock character became a cornerstone in most YA fiction during its time, leading to this thesis’s investigation of its necessitation: why must a teenage girl save her country’s people from an oppressive government and why can none of the other children or adults do this saving? This thesis attends to Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games (2008-2025) and Tahereh Mafi’s Shatter Me (2011-2021) to examine the conditions and subsequent formula that give rise to this teen …
Art Therapy And A Strength-Based Approach For Working With Children With Emotional And Behavioral Challenges: A Qualitative, Arts-Based Study, James D. Wyld

Processing Conditions In Narrative Interpretation: A Structural Account Of Cf/Ef Divergence In "The Clerk's Tale”, Griselda Poe
Processing Conditions In Narrative Interpretation: A Structural Account Of Cf/Ef Divergence In "The Clerk's Tale”, Griselda Poe
Publications and Research
This paper applies the framework established in Paper 19, "Cognition Is Not Content: A Structural Account of Processing Conditions," to re-describe Chaucer's "The Clerk's Tale" from The Canterbury Tales.
The same narrative produces two incompatible interpretations: a record of domestic violence, and a story of genuine love. This divergence does not arise from differences in ethical judgment or emotional response. It arises from structural differences in the conditions under which information is reconstructed.
This paper does three things. First, it analyzes the characters Walter and Griselda in terms of CF (Core-foregrounded) and EF (Modulation-foregrounded) processing conditions. Second, it describes …

Comparing Two Emergent Literacy Screeners: The Reading House And Star Early Literacy In A Florida Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten (Vpk) Program, Jaime D. Swenbeck
Poster Presentations
Emergent Literacy (EL) refers to the foundational skills that develop from birth through the preschool years and support later reading success (National Early Literacy Panel, 2008; Levy et al., 2006). These include basic Print Concepts, Phonological Awareness, Vocabulary, Letter-Sound Knowledge, and Emergent Writing (Piasta et al., 2021; Puranik et al., 2011). Because they serve as predictors for later literacy success, accurate identification of children struggling to learn EL skills is important. There are various types of tools, ranging from screening tools to diagnostic assessments, that measure children’s EL skills, with assessment times ranging from 10-15 minutes to 45-60 minutes. In …

On The Parametrization Of Self-Adjoint Extensions Of Singular Sturm-Liouville Operators, Caleb Beckler
On The Parametrization Of Self-Adjoint Extensions Of Singular Sturm-Liouville Operators, Caleb Beckler
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The self-adjoint extensions of a lower semi-bounded minimal Sturm–Liouville operator are parametrized using generalized boundary values defined by fixed choices of special nonoscillatory solutions, called principal and nonprincipal solutions. However, principal and nonprincipal solutions are not unique, and different choices yield different generalized boundary values. Therefore, the parametrization of self-adjoint extensions inherently depends upon the choices of principal and nonprincipal solutions. Using known properties of principal and nonprincipal solutions, Wronskian techniques, and the Pl¨ucker identity, we find the relation between self-adjoint extensions for two different parametrizations.
The Nature Of Violence: Exploring How Community And Incident Characteristics Influence The Likelihood That Gun Crimes Become Multi-Victim Events, Kathleen Hillman
The Nature Of Violence: Exploring How Community And Incident Characteristics Influence The Likelihood That Gun Crimes Become Multi-Victim Events, Kathleen Hillman
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Gun crime continues to represent a substantial threat to public safety in the United States. Firearms are disproportionately involved in most crimes of violence, particularly murder (Collins et al., 2017; Cook & Pollack, 2017; Goldsmith et al., 2022; Johnson et al., 2021), and firearm-related offending is more pronounced in the U.S. than any other industrialized nation (Carson et al., 2022). A large body of literature has examined the extent to which characteristics of communities, place, victims, and offenders contribute to the likelihood and frequency of gun violence. Yet the vast majority of these works have restricted their analyses to single-offender, …

This study sought to explore the impact of anxiety on inhibition and vigilance performance. Participants’ anxiety scores significantly correlated with the number of omission errors made on the inhibition task. Participants also made …
Transform-Based Quantum Potential Reconstruction From Sparse Spectral Data: Generalized Bertlmann-Martin Moment Inequalities, Matthew Plott
Transform-Based Quantum Potential Reconstruction From Sparse Spectral Data: Generalized Bertlmann-Martin Moment Inequalities, Matthew Plott
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Inverse quantum problems ask whether a central potential V(r) can be reconstructed from limited spectral information under explicit modeling assumptions. This dissertation develops and validates a reproducible, transform-based framework for reconstructing ground-state radial densities rho(r) = |R(r)|^2 and central potentials V(r) from discrete bound-state energy levels using generalized Bertlmann-Martin (GBM) moment inequalities as physics-informed constraints. In the Laplace route, L(q) is assembled from moment data and inverted numerically to recover rho(r). In the Fourier/form-factor route, even moments determine F(q) and inverse transformation yields rho(r). To support sparse spectral inputs, analytic continuation is performed with Pade approximants, and the framework is …
Unsupervised Discovery And Validation Of Affective Engagement States Using Synchronized Eeg And Eye-Tracking During Digital Learning, Menekse Adar
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This study explores affective engagement states in digital learning environments using synchronized EEG and eye-tracking data. EEG signals were collected from frontal channels and processed using sliding windows to extract band-power features. Frontal Alpha Asymmetry (FAA; log alpha power difference, F4–F3) and the Beta–Alpha ratio (BA; log beta/alpha power ratio) were used as affective proxies. Instead of predefined emotion labels, unsupervised clustering methods were applied to identify latent engagement patterns directly from EEG features. To ensure robustness, non-overlapping parity analysis and hold-out validation were performed. Statistical tests were conducted to compare FAA and BA values across the identified clusters. Results …

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Over fifty years from the Fall of Saigon, the United States continues to question its participation in unjust warfare, both as a nation and as a people. This study examines the transmission of war stories amongst families: specifically, what becomes negotiated in the thresholds of memory and narrative, and what might become of those spaces across past, present, and future. While prior discourse has centered on the authority and authenticity of war memory through political discourse, historical narrative, and public memorialization, the role of storytelling within families remains underexplored. This research addresses that gap through interdisciplinary inquiry and qualitative ethnography …

From Viewer To Participant: Building Emotional Stakes And Audience Advocacy Through Original Film Marketing In The Internet Age, Andy Joshua Pal
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Film marketing has always been a vital part of engaging audiences with motion pictures, particularly for original intellectual property (IP) projects striving to build a passionate fanbase. In the 1950s and 1960s, filmmaking pioneers Alfred Hitchcock and William Castle revolutionized original movie campaigns, laying the foundation for audience engagement through two main, opposite strategies: secrecy for horror and horror-adjacent releases and transparency for non-horror releases. The Blair Witch Project (Sánchez and Myrick, 1999)’s marketing became the defining film campaign of the internet age, drawing upon Hitchcock and Castle’s secretive approaches by pioneering alternate reality games (ARGs). This strategy, which lets …
International Spillover: How External, Global Events Such As Brexit And Covid-19 Have Impacted Housing Prices Within The Republic Of Ireland, Allie Riggs
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
The housing market in Ireland has experienced such a great crisis in recent history that over a third of residents have considered moving to a more affordable country (Hogg, 2024). While a number of both causes and potential solutions have been analyzed in regard to this national crisis, I hypothesize that there has been a greater shock from external, global events in the COVID-19 pandemic and Brexit. In performing a regression on secondary data while controlling for macroeconomic factors that impact the housing market, I have identified a positive, significant association between these two exogenous shocks and their impact on …
