Children's Health Perceptions, Amy Forrest
Children's Health Perceptions, Amy Forrest
MSN Research Projects
Little empirical knowledge exists regarding children's perceptions of health. The purpose of this quantitative descriptive study was to determine the health perceptions of children with a convenience sample of fourth-grade students at a small elementary school in Northeast Mississippi. The theoretical framework utilized was Bandura's Social Learning Theory. The directional hypothesis in the proposed study was school-age children have a positive perception of health. The Children's Health Rating Scale was utilized as a measurement tool that ranked 17 health-related questions on a scale of 1 to 5 (1 = most negative, 5 = most positive). A high cumulative score indicated …
Openness And Monotoneity Of Induced Mappings, W. J. Charatonik
Openness And Monotoneity Of Induced Mappings, W. J. Charatonik
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
It is shown that for locally connected continuum X if the induced mapping C(f) : C(X) ->C(Y) is open, then f is monotone. As a corollary it follows that if the continuum X is hereditarily locally connected and C(f) is open, then f is a homeomorphism. An example is given to show that local connectedness is essential in the result.

Neural Network Approach To Speech Pathology, Antonio P. Salvatore, Nicole A. Thorne, Charlotte M. Gross
Neural Network Approach To Speech Pathology, Antonio P. Salvatore, Nicole A. Thorne, Charlotte M. Gross
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
A speech problem can be caused by different reasons, from psychological to organic. The existing diagnostic of speech pathologies relies on skilled doctors who can often diagnose by simply listening to the patient. We show that neural networks can simulate this ability and thus provide an automated (preliminary) diagnosis.

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
The gaining popularity of the World Wide Web increases security risks. Search tools monitor plain text in web pages, but search for text in graphical images is still difficult. For this search, we use the fact that the compressed images with text have different size than images without text.
Productivity Growth And Convergence In Agriculture And Manufacturing, Will Martin, Devashish Mitra
Productivity Growth And Convergence In Agriculture And Manufacturing, Will Martin, Devashish Mitra
Economics - All Scholarship
The growth of agricultural productivity is widely believed to be low. But this study finds the productivity growth rate in agriculture to be higher than that in manufacturing, both on average and for groups of countries at different stages of development. This suggests that a large agricultural sector need not be a disadvantage for growth performance - and may be an advantage.
Martin and Mitra examine the growth and convergence of total factor productivity in agriculture and manufacturing in a large sample of countries spanning many levels of development over the period 1967-92. There is a widely held but rarely …

Induced Changes In Solvent Structure By Phospholipid Monolayer Formation At A Liquid–Liquid Interface, R. A. Walker, D. E. Gragson, G. L. Richmond
Induced Changes In Solvent Structure By Phospholipid Monolayer Formation At A Liquid–Liquid Interface, R. A. Walker, D. E. Gragson, G. L. Richmond
Chemistry and Biochemistry
Vibrational sum frequency spectroscopy has been used in conjunction with dynamic surface tension measurements to study formation of a 1,2-dilauroyl-sn-phosphatidylcholine (DLPC) monolayer at a water–carbon tetrachloride interface. Surface tension measurements show that an aqueous solution of liquid crystalline phosphocholine vesicles (4.5 μM DLPC) requires several hours to form a tightly packed, fully equilibrated monolayer of DLPC monomers. Vibrational spectra of the interfacial region at different stages in the monolayer formation process indicate that the solvent structure undergoes dramatic re-organization as the monolayer forms. Initial adsorption of DLPC monomers severely disrupts the interfacial hydrogen bonding. Intensity in the OH …
The Effect Of Ethnicity And Generation On Cultural Values, Launa Beck
The Effect Of Ethnicity And Generation On Cultural Values, Launa Beck
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Using an existential perspective, the researcher investigated the world views of 155 people divided first by ethnic group and then (n = 144) by generation. African Americans and White Americans, Baby Boomers and Generation Xers completed the Scale to Assess World Views (Ibrahim & Owen, 1994) at a grocery store in the Midwest. Results indicate significant differences between African Americans and White Americans on the Pessimistic, Traditional, and Here and Now world views but no difference in rank order. Coefficient alphas for the subscales ranged from (.42) to (.67) with an overall value of (.82) for the scale. A confirmatory …
Aging And Stereoscopic Shape Perception, Thomas Dawson
Aging And Stereoscopic Shape Perception, Thomas Dawson
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Past research on stereoscopic depth perception among the elderly has led to inconsistent findings. Some research on stereopsis and aging has found that younger and older adults are essentially the same in terms of their stereoscopic ability, while other research has found evidence of large differences. This past research has largely been limited to investigations of stereoacuity. The purpose of Experiment 1 was to extend this earlier research to compare how older and younger observers perceive the magnitude of stereoscopically defined depth intervals. Random-dot stereograms depicting sinusoidal surfaces were shown to seven younger (i.e., ages 30 and below) and six …
Analysis Of Galvanized Steel Plates Using Glow Discharge-Atomic Emission Spectrometry, Liang Wang
Analysis Of Galvanized Steel Plates Using Glow Discharge-Atomic Emission Spectrometry, Liang Wang
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Combining an intense emission source and a high-speed sputtering source in one, glow discharge atomic emission spectrometer (GD-AES) provides an efficient technique for analyzing surfaces, coatings and bulk solids. The purpose of our work is to explore the optimum lamp operation parameters of SA-2000 for analysis of galvanized steel plate and to investigate the method for qualitatively and quantitatively analyzing the zinc coating. Under the optimum experimental conditions found in our study, which are current of 19-21 mA; voltage of 900-1200 V; pressure 2.0-2.5 torr, the calibration curve is constructed, so that specific zinc concentration can be assign to the …
Comparison Of An Advanced Mercury Analyzer With The Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption Technique For The Determination Of Mercury In Coal, Dong Li
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
For over 30 years the industry standard method for mercury analysis has been the cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometric technique (CVAAS). Recent developments in improving this technique have focused on procedures for concentrating mercury in the analyte or materials to improve detection. The LECO Corporation produces an Advanced Mercury Analyzer, the AMA-254, for analysis of the solid and liquid samples. The system allows for the thermal heating of the sample to decompose the sample and release mercury, which is concentrated in a gold amalgam. Thermal desorption of the mercury from the amalgam is detected by atomic absorption spectroscopy. A comparison …
The Effects Of Phosphorus Enrichment On The Dominant Phytoplankton Communities Of Chaney Lake, Kathy Tehrani
The Effects Of Phosphorus Enrichment On The Dominant Phytoplankton Communities Of Chaney Lake, Kathy Tehrani
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Chaney Lake is a temporary karst wetland located in southern Warren County, Kentucky. Because of an impermeable chert layer between the surface and the porous limestone, Chaney Lake fills with water over the winter and spring and then gradually drains over the summer. Three experiments were conducted over the course of the 1998 flooding season to assess the effects of phosphorus addition on the phytoplankton community in Chaney Lake. Ten plastic-sided mesocosms were constructed and placed in the marsh area of the wetland at three different periods: early spring, early summer, and late summer. Phosphorus in the form of K2HPO4 …
The Relationship Between Loneliness And Social Skills In Learning Disabled And Regular Education Populations, Roberta Miller
The Relationship Between Loneliness And Social Skills In Learning Disabled And Regular Education Populations, Roberta Miller
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Loneliness in children has been associated with internalizing symptoms such as shyness, depression, and low self-esteem (Brage, Meredith, & Woodward, 1993; Renshaw & Brown, 1993; Rubin, LeMare, & Lollis, 1990) and externalizing symptoms such as aggression (Coie, Dodge, & Coppotelli, 1982; Cassidy & Asher, 1992; Dobson, Campbell, & Dobson, 1987). The later outcomes of both of these kinds of internalizing and externalizing symptoms include school withdrawal, criminality, and victimization (Rubin, 1985; Parker & Asher, 1987). We know that children who rate themselves lonely tend to be rejected by peer groups. We also know that children who are rejected by peer …
