Small Satellite Conference
MightySat is a United States Air Force (USAF) Research Laboratory multi-mission, small satellite program dedicated to providing frequent, inexpensive, on-orbit demonstrations of high-payoff space system technologies. MightySat I, the 140lb pathfmder satellite of the MightySat series, was ejected from the Space Shuttle Endeavor on the 15th of December, 1998. Contact with the satellite was established one hour after ejection, and MightySat I has been performing robustly on-orbit ever since. This paper provides an overview of the MightySat I satellite and its experiments: a lightweight composite structure, high-efficiency solar panels, low-power microelectronics, low-shock release devices, and micro-particle impact detectors. The design, …

First In-Orbit Results From The Uosat -12 Minisatellite, Jeffrey Ward, Martin Sweeting
Small Satellite Conference
In 1995, having built and launched twelve 50-kg micro satellites, the Surrey Space Centre made a strategic decision to develop and demonstrate a larger low-cost satellite platform. This internally-funded project became the UoSAT-12 research and development minisatellite, a 325-kg satellite demonstrating key bus and payload technologies. On 21 April, a converted SS-18 Inter Continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) placed Surrey's UoSAT-12 minisatellite in a 650 km, 65° orbit. The in-orbit acquisition and check-out of the satellite have been successful. Engineers operating the satellite from Surrey's mission control centre have received initial results from attitude control, remote sensing, Global Positioning System (GPS) …

Small Satellite Conference
Under the MERLION project name, Nanyang Technological University of Singapore has teamed up with Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. of the UK and developed a sophisticated communication payload on the UoSAT-12 mini-satellite which was launched recently. The MERLION payload combines an analogue and digital regenerative transponder, with L-band uplink and S-band downlink. The transponder can be configured in-orbit for a variety of functions and experiments, and carries dual signal processors. The digital uplink comprises a frequency agile L-band receiver, and 9600bps FSK and IMbps BPSK demodulators. The frequency agile digital S-band downlink is intended for high speed data transfer and will …

Phosphoinositide-Ap-2 Interactions Required For Targeting To Plasma Membrane Clathrin-Coated Pits., I Gaidarov, James H. Keen
Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers
The clathrin-associated AP-2 adaptor protein is a major polyphosphoinositide-binding protein in mammalian cells. A high affinity binding site has previously been localized to the NH(2)-terminal region of the AP-2 alpha subunit (Gaidarov et al. 1996. J. Biol. Chem. 271:20922-20929). Here we used deletion and site- directed mutagenesis to determine that alpha residues 21-80 comprise a discrete folding and inositide-binding domain. Further, positively charged residues located within this region are involved in binding, with a lysine triad at positions 55-57 particularly critical. Mutant peptides and protein in which these residues were changed to glutamine retained wild-type structural and functional characteristics by …

A Patching Model For Surface Tension And The Tolman Length, T.V. Bykov, Xiao Cheng Zeng
A Patching Model For Surface Tension And The Tolman Length, T.V. Bykov, Xiao Cheng Zeng
Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications
In the framework of density functional theory (DFT), a patching model for the density profile of the liquid–vapor interface is developed. The patching is based on analytical expressions of the asymptote of the density profiles. Derived from the model the surface tension of planar liquid–vapor interface as well as the Tolman length can be computed from analytic expressions. Two prototype systems are considered; the Yukawa and the Lennard-Jones. As a result, the temperature dependence of the surface tension as well as the Tolman length are obtained. The results are compared with numerical DFT calculations.
