The victim was engaged in widening a breaching lane at 13:40 when the accident occurred. He was not using approved marking methods [using none] and the accident occurred 3 metres in front of his base stick. His equipment had been removed from the site but witnesses confirmed that the victim's visor and prodder were some metres behind the victim [visor not worn] and that the handle of his trowel was a metre from the accident site

The victim was cutting an exploratory lane "to identify the direction of the Plough share mines". This appears to have been done by identifying a picket (post on which the plough share mines were originally placed) and working towards the next. The victim missed the next picket and returned to a place 30 metres from the last picket. "This is the normal drill to be used when row direction is lost". The victim did not use the correct marking and clearance procedures. He was investigating a detector reading at 08:15 when the accident occurred.

Low-Cost, Minimum-Size Satellites For Demonstration Of Formation Flying Modes At Small, Kilometer-Size Distances, Hans Meissinger, John Collins, Gwynne Gurevich, Simon Dawson
Small Satellite Conference
In-flight demonstration of close-range formation flying modes is discussed with emphasis on low cost, based on spacecraft design simplicity and minimum size, and hence minimum launch cost. Piggy-back launch of three identical demonstration spacecraft is the preferred option. This demonstration includes comprehensive collection and analysis, on the ground, of relative motion data derived from GPS signals that are received by the participating satellites. In addition to realistically reflecting the known Keplerian and non-Keplerian characteristics as part of the flight dynamics analysis, an important concern is to demonstrate the less well-known effects of differential drag perturbations. These can be deliberately induced …

Small Satellite Conference
Every year natural and manmade disasters cause devastation around the World through loss of life, widespread human suffering, and huge economic losses. Remote sensing satellites can contribute to mitigation of this devastation through early warning, event monitoring, and after-theevent studies. Unfortunately, present satellite remote sensing systems do not provide the high temporal resolution required for this activity. Additionally, the images they provide come at high cost per scene. The Surrey Space Centre at the University of Surrey has designed a constellation of remote sensing micro satellites that delivers 35 m ground resolution over a 600 km width scene in up …

Current and planned operational space-borne Earth observation systems provide spatially, radiometrically or temporally crude data for the detection and monitoring of high temperature phenomena on the surface of our planet. High Temperature Events (HTE) are forest and savannah fires. fires of open coal mines, volcanic activities and others. A simultaneous co-registration of a combination of infrared (IR) and visible (VIS) channels is the key for a reliable autonomous on-board detection of High Temperature Events (HTE) on Earth surface. Furthermore there are ecology-oriented objectives mainly related to the sophisticated data fusion of spectrometric & imaging remote inspection and parameter extraction of …

A Java Framework For Spatial Embedded Systems, L. Apvrille, P. Senac, M. Diaz
Small Satellite Conference
Satellite constellations will soon play a fundamental role in global broadband and heterogeneous communication architectures. These constellations will offer ubiquitous access to interactive multimedia services. Spatial embedded systems must evolve accordingly to provide a robust real time support, including a dynamically extensible runtime environment. In other words, these systems must allow new services or features to be dynamically loaded and linked to the embedded software. Object technology answers the need for dynamically extensible systems. But can it also answer the constraints of embedded real-time systems? First experiments with Java indicate that an efficient real time scheduling of Java tasks can …

The traditional ground station consists of a building full of specialized hardware and a large stationary antenna operated by a group of on-site personnel. Reduced budgets have forced project managers to re-evaluate this concept in search of ways to save money. To this end, PC-based systems have been developed that reduce hardware costs and the number of machines and personne I necessary to perform station tasks. In this paper, we will take this concept to the next level. By improving on the current PC-based systems we will further reduce the hardware and personnel costs, and by introducing the concept of …
