Deminer worked in a minefield with a metal detector on a metal contaminated ground. While lifting the detector’s head from the surface towards the turf, the detector must have been slanted so it could have easily activated the PROM’s detonator if it was to be at the edge of the turf.

Method Of Protecting Against Neuron Loss, Philip W. Landfield
Method Of Protecting Against Neuron Loss, Philip W. Landfield
Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Patents
The present invention pertains to a method of protecting against neuron loss in a subject by administering a compound that protects against neuron loss by acting through a vitamin D receptor. Some of these compounds may prevent or retard neuron loss by regulating intraneuronal and/or peripheral calcium and phosphate levels. Other compounds of the invention act through a vitamin D receptor to protect against neuron loss through mechanisms not involving calcium or phosphate regulation. A preferred compound is a biologically active form of vitamin D, a precursor, metabolite, or analog of vitamin D. A preferred form of vitamin D is …

Ruth (Coan) Fulton was born on June 19, 1915 in Manchester, New Hampshire to Fred Coan and Pearl Knowles Coan. Her father was a foreman at the Elliot Manufacturing Company in Manchester, New Hampshire. Her parents were Republicans. Ruth went to Bates College with Ed Muskie where she majored in English. While there, she was treasurer of the Women’s Student Government. She was also involved in dramatics, the glee club, college choir, and music. After college, she became a teacher and lived in Portland, Maine. She married Robert William Fulton, who was an electrical engineer.
Plant Architecture And Forage Selection By Moose, Edward Joseph Mallek
Plant Architecture And Forage Selection By Moose, Edward Joseph Mallek
Biological Sciences
The effects of plant architecture on browse selection and the extent of use of Salix alaxensis and Salix plantifolia by moose foraging in winter in Interior Alaska were studied during 1997 and 1998. Three sampling techniques were employed to estimate forage availability and utilization. Sampling forage availability prior to use (in autumn) provided the best estimates of forage use in spring. In Salix plantifolia, selection of current annual growth (CAG) twigs was significantly related to basal diameter of CAG, diameter of nearest neighbor, distance to nearest neighbor, and number of leaders per cluster. In contrast, CAG selection in Salix alaxensis …

Univercity News (1999-08-16)
UniverCity News, 1998-2001
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Two New Topologically Ordered Glass Phases Of Smectics Confined In Anisotropic Random Media, Brad Jacobsen, Karl Saunders, Leo Radzihovsky, John Toner
Two New Topologically Ordered Glass Phases Of Smectics Confined In Anisotropic Random Media, Brad Jacobsen, Karl Saunders, Leo Radzihovsky, John Toner
Physics
Smectics in strained aerogel exhibit two new glassy phases. The strain both ensures the stability of these phases and determines their nature. One type of strain induces an “ XY Bragg glass,” while the other creates a novel, triaxially anisotropic “ m = 1 Bragg glass.” The latter exhibits anomalous elasticity, characterized by exponents that we calculate to high precision. We predict the phase diagram, and numerous other experimentally observable scaling laws, for the system.

Celastrina Idella (Lycaenidae: Polyommatinae): A New Butterfly Species From The Atlantic Coastal Plain, David M. Wright, Harry Pavulaan
The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey
A new species of Polyommatinae, Celastrina idella, is described from the sandy Atlantic coastal plain of the eastern United States. It is presently known to occur from southern New Jersey through Georgia. Celastrina idella larvae have been recorded from four species of Ilex (holly). Celastrina idella is distinguished from sympatric C. ladon and C. neglecta by differences in larval host, flight period, pupal diapause, and adult size and wing characters. In the New Jersey pine barrens the butterfly is univoltine and flies in the spring between the flights of its sympatric congeners.
Assignment Of The Infrared Spectra Of The Methanol Trimer, Gregory S. Tschumper, Jason M. Gonzales, Henry F. Schaefer
Assignment Of The Infrared Spectra Of The Methanol Trimer, Gregory S. Tschumper, Jason M. Gonzales, Henry F. Schaefer
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
Second-order Möller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) and density functional theory (DFT) were employed to optimize two cyclic conformations of the methanol trimer, denoted "bowl" and "chair," as well as a third noncyclic, "open-chain" conformation. This is the first time all three methanol trimer conformations have been studied at the same level of theory. Harmonic vibrational frequencies confirm that all stationary points are minima on the intermolecular potential energy hypersurface. The chair is consistently predicted to be the most stable conformer. The bowl and open-chain conformers are only slightly less stable and lie within 3 kcal/mol. Results indicate that the bowl structure …

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Determination of the complex dielectric function and the critical-point energies of (AlxGa1-x)0.51In0.49P, over the full range of composition x and for photon energies E from 0.75 to 5 eV is reported from variable angle of incidence spectroscopic ellipsometry. Native-oxide effects on the (AlxGa1-x)0.51In0.49P optical functions are removed numerically. The highly disordered state of the metalorganic vapor-phase epitaxy grown samples is analyzed by transmission electron microscopy. Optical anisotropy investigations revealed that the order-induced optical birefringence is negligible throughout. The augmentation of A. D. …

Relationships Between The Degree Of Restructuring In Western Washington Elementary Schools And The Results On Criterion Referenced 4th Grade Assessments For Reading, Mathematics, Writing, And Listening, Gary C. Newbill
Theses and Dissertations
The primary purpose of this study was to explore relationships between the degree of school restructuring in Western Washington elementary schools and results on criterion referenced tests for reading, writing, mathematics, and listening, administered to 4th grade students in 1997. The sample of convenience included 47 elementary schools from 4 Puget Sound counties.
The current study extended a larger project on educational reform conducted by 7 researchers under the direction of Professor J. T. Fouts. This research explored relationships between the degree of school restructuring, a construct developed through factor analysis of classroom teacher responses on the School Practices and …
