An Attitude Control System For A Low-Cost Earth Observation Satellite With Orbit Maintenance Capability , Willem Steyn, Yoshi Hashida

Small Satellite Conference

UoSAT-12 is a low-cost minisatellite built by Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. (SSTL), it is amongst other objectives also a technology demonstrator for high performance attitude control and orbit maintenance on a future constellation of earth observation satellites. The satellite uses a 3-axis reaction wheel configuration and a cold gas propulsion system to enable precise and fast control of its attitude, for example, during orbit manoeuvres. Magnetorquer coils assist the wheels mainly for momentum dumping. This paper describes the various attitude control modes required to support: 1) the initial attitude acquisition phase, 2) a high resolution imager payload during pointing and …

New Approach To Achieving Stand Alone Gps Attitude Determination Using Dual Short Baselines For Small-Satellite , S. Purivigraipong, M. S. Hodgart, Y. Hashida, M. J. Unwin

Small Satellite Conference

This paper proposes a new approach to GPS (Global Positioning System) attitude determination for small satellite application in LEO (low Earth orbit). Prior knowledge of attitude and integer resolution is not required. The methodology of the new approach includes integer ambiguity search, initial estimation of attitude and line bias, attitude initialisation, path difference estimation and fine attitude determination. The observable is the carrier phase difference measurement between two GPS antennas. A dual short baseline (typical baseline length up to 30 cm) is assumed in this research. The key point to initialising attitude is to estimated the attitude of individual baseline …

Small Satellite Conference

In mid-1997, the Australian Government approved the setting up of a Cooperative Research Centre for Satellite Systems (CRCSS) to promote Australian space research. A key outcome of the research activities is intended to be the launching of a research satellite - FedSat- by the year 2001, the centenary year of Australian Federation. This will be the first Australian built satellite since 1970, and vital a step towards Australia's reentry into the satellite business. This talk describes the aims of the FedSat mission; the design of the overall system; and provides up-to-date details of progress towards project completion.

The Florida Space Institute's Photon Satellite Bus, Derek Shannon, Chrishma Singh-Derewa, Sanjay Jayaram Aug 1999

The Florida Space Institute's Photon Satellite Bus, Derek Shannon, Chrishma Singh-Derewa, Sanjay Jayaram

Small Satellite Conference

Photon is a small satellite for researching atmospheric effects on Earth-to-space laser propagation and the mitigation of those effects. Florida Space Institute engineers and scientists are designing the science mission and payload, while FSI students are responsible for the satellite bus. An agreement with NASA for a free launch aboard the Space Shuttle's Hitchhiker Ejection System has led to a unique, bottomup design approach. Science goals and stringent safety requirements have created interesting challenges for the structure, thermal, attitude control, and power subsystems. This paper emphasizes these challenges in presenting the design of the Photon satellite bus.

Operations Planning And Formation Flying: Analyzing Resource Usage In Formation Assembly , Brian Engberg Aug 1999

Operations Planning And Formation Flying: Analyzing Resource Usage In Formation Assembly , Brian Engberg

Small Satellite Conference

Increasing interest in small spacecraft has fostered a variety of new mission concepts. Within this busy framework, one particular family of mission concepts is taking shape - spacecraft formations. Formation flying entails the organized collection of satellites in a region of space to do a certain job. Missions of this kind pose some interesting design challenges. Most notably, active control of a formation is a fairly popular topic. The aim of s.uch research is to devise a means of stabilizing a loosely bound system while conserving valuable resources. Another area, which seems to be lagging in attention, is the area …

Wittex: A Constellation Of Three Small Satellite Radar Altimeters, Keith Raney, Glen Fountain, Robert Gold, Ark Lew, David Porter

Small Satellite Conference

WITTEX, named in honor of E. Witte, who in 1878 first discovered the geostrophic current equation, is an acronym for Water Inclination Topography and Technology Experiment. WITTEX consists of three co-planar small satellite radar altimeters launched on the same vehicle into a GEOSAT -class orbit. The proposed satellite constellation would support measurement for the first time of both orthogonal components of the ocean's surface slope, rather than the single component seen by conventional instruments. The satellites are spaced by several kilometers along their orbit; Earth rotation causes their sub-satellite tracks to be laterally separated. Track separation can be readily adjusted …

Mars Micromissions, Steve Matousek, Kim Leschly, Bob Gershman, John Reimer Aug 1999

Mars Micromissions, Steve Matousek, Kim Leschly, Bob Gershman, John Reimer

Small Satellite Conference

A Mars micromission launches as an Ariane 5 secondary as early as November I, 2002. One possible mission is a Comm/nav micromission .orbiter. The other possible mission is a Mars airplane. Both missions are enabled by a lowcost, common micromisson bus design. The future of Mars micromissions has at least two micromissions per Mars Opportunity In cooperation with CNES. Other destinations besides Mars are possible by small changes and technology Infusion in the micromission system design detailed here. Micromissions enable a new class of science investigations and comm/nav orbiters due to low-cost, focused design.

Design Of Simple Low-Cost Mars Microlander, Tomas Svitek Aug 1999

Design Of Simple Low-Cost Mars Microlander, Tomas Svitek

Small Satellite Conference

This paper describes the development of a simple low-cost Mars microlander that is matched to the capabilities of the recently-approved Mars Micromission program. This particular microlander design is intended to fill a capability gap between two existing landing systems: the large sophisticated soft landers like Mars Polar Lander and the miniaturized DS-2-class penetrators. This microlander would be able to deliver (in a controlled manner) a small but sophisticated science payload to multiple, exciting but risky landing sites (as an example for our point design, we have used the delivery of the 60% scale Sojourner-class minirover). The unique attribute of this …

Small Satellite Conference

The development of technologies for miniature, low-mass, high density components and of systems that efficiently utilize these teclmologies has enabled a path to the next generation of highly capable microsatellites in the range of 10 - 100-kg. The characteristics and capabilities of this emerging class of satellites are briefly described. These satellites have the potential for revolutionizing space missions owing to their small size, low cost, significant capability, and good return on investment. This paper documents conceptual microsatellite mission scenarios examined in a collaborative effort between the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory of the California …

The Quality Of Researchers' Searches Of The Eric Database, Scott Hertzberg, Lawrence Rudner Aug 1999

The Quality Of Researchers' Searches Of The Eric Database, Scott Hertzberg, Lawrence Rudner

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

During the last ten years, end-users of electronic databases have become progressively less dependent on librarians and other intermediaries. This is certainly the case with the Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) Database, a resource once accessed by passing a paper query form to a librarian and now increasingly searched directly by end-users. This article empirically examines the search strategies currently being used by researchers and other groups. College professors and educational researchers appear to be doing a better job searching the database than other ERIC patrons. However, the study suggests that most end-users should be using much better search strategies.
