Adolescent Depression : Further Examination Of Gender Differences, Elizabeth Marie O'Neill

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study was designed to examine pertinent research questions that remain unanswered by past investigations of adolescent depression. Specifically this study investigated potential differences between high and low scoring depressed adolescents, and whether gender is an influential variable for consideration. Subjects were 175 adolescent boys and girls from a laboratory school in Midwestern Iowa. Subjects were divided into four groups based on gender and responses two questions on the BDI-A. Specifically, the four groups were: boys who scored at or above IO on the BDI-A (sub-clinical group--boys), boys who scored below 10 on the BDI-A (control group--boys), girls who scored …

Setpoint Tracking Predictive Control In Chemical Processes Based On System Identification, Sinchai Chinvorarat Jan 1999

Setpoint Tracking Predictive Control In Chemical Processes Based On System Identification, Sinchai Chinvorarat

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A Kraft recovery boiler in a pulp-paper mill provides a means for recovery of the heat energy in spent liquor and recovery of inorganic chemicals while controlling emissions. These processes are carried out in a combined chemical recovery unit and steam boiler that is fired with concentrated black liquor and which produces molten smelt. Since the recovery boiler is considered to be an essential part of the pulp-paper mill in terms of energy resources, the performance of the recovery boiler has to be controlled to achieve the highest efficiency under unexpected disturbances.

This dissertation presents a new approach for combining …

Land Use In The Tropical Karst - The Case Of Peruaçu, Januária And Jaiba; Se Brazil, Heinz Charles Kohler, Sergio Dos Anjos Ferreira Pinto, João Francisco De Abreu

International Journal of Speleology

The karstic regions of the municipalities of Peruaçu, Januária and Jaiba present a variety of soil uses which are a function of the organization of the karstic relief. This relief system forms a rift, which received fluvial sediments deposition from the São Francisco River. The horst of the Peruaçu plateau is developed on limestone rocks of Late Proterozoic age with a high concentration of calcium carbonate. The South American Surface was formed on this and is today occupied by cattle ranching. In the graben, due to easy irrigation from underground karst waters and because of the nearby drainage system of …

I have been requested to ask very tough questions of our panelists, so I will do that in the hope of drawing all of you in the audience into the dialogue. First, we will hear some remarks from Professor Nicholas Johnson of Fordham University School of Law.

The Place Of Victims In The Theory Of Retribution, George P. Fletcher Jan 1999

The Place Of Victims In The Theory Of Retribution, George P. Fletcher

Faculty Scholarship

Remarkably, the theory of criminal law has developed without paying much attention to the place of victims in the analysis of responsibility or in the rationale for punishment. You can read a first-rate book like Michael Moore's recent Placing Blame and not find a single reference to the relevance of victims in imposing liability and punishment. In the last several decades we have witnessed notable strides toward attending to the rights and interests of crime victims, but these concerns have yet to intrude upon the discussion of the central issues of wrongdoing, blame, and punishment.

Admittedly, victims and their sentiments …

Yusef Komunyakaa: Questioning Traditional Metaphors Of Light And Darkness, Katarzyna Jakubiak Jan 1999

Yusef Komunyakaa: Questioning Traditional Metaphors Of Light And Darkness, Katarzyna Jakubiak

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The theory of language promoted by cognitive linguistics points to metaphor as the crucial element of language and thought: a mode of thinking which determines our perception of reality. Stressing the importance of metaphor in our everyday life, George Lakoff, Mark Johnson, and Mark Turner state that the nature of poetic metaphors is the same as the nature of conventional metaphors which appear in "standard" language. Creating poetic metaphors, poets simply explore "conventional" metaphors, using four major strategies: expanding, elaborating, composing, and questioning. Focusing on questioning as the main strategy through which American "multicultural" literatures can undermine basic Western concepts …

An Evaluation Of Adhd Assessment, Intervention, And Progress Monitoring Practices In One School According To Best Practice Recommendations, Kristin M. Briggs

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study investigated the quality of ADHD assessment, interventions, and progress monitoring practices in a school building. Education personnel were also surveyed (n = 8) to gain further insight into the current school policies and practices for ADHD. Barkley's 1990 model of ADHD assessment and intervention was chosen as the standard of best practice in which current practices were compared. One school was selected for participation in the study. All students on medication for ADHD in kindergarten through twelfth grades served as subjects (n = 13). Data analysis revealed that seven of these student files (54%) did not include documentation …

The Determinants Of Juvenile Justice Policy In France And Germany, Jacqueline A. Meyers Jan 1999

The Determinants Of Juvenile Justice Policy In France And Germany, Jacqueline A. Meyers

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation assesses the factors that influence the development of juvenile justice policy in France and Germany within the context of systems theory, The project utilizes an open/closed systems framework as a way to conceptualize determinants of juvenile justice policy. France and Germany serve as two single case studies for demonstrating the open and closed dichotomy that characterize system theory with France being characterized as a closed system while Germany is characterized as an open system. This difference is demonstrated through a discussion of historical, cultural, political, social and economic variables, which shape policy development in each of these countries. …

A Woman's Field Is Made At Night: Gendered Land Rights And Norms In Burkina Faso, Michael Kevane, Leslie C. Gray Jan 1999

A Woman's Field Is Made At Night: Gendered Land Rights And Norms In Burkina Faso, Michael Kevane, Leslie C. Gray

Economics

Gendered social norms and institutions are important determinants of agricultural activities in southwestern Burkina Faso. This paper argues that gendered land tenure, in particular, has effects on equity and efficiency. The usual view of women as holders of secondary, or indirect, rights to land must be supplemented by a more nuanced understanding of tenure. Women's rights are in fact considerably more complex than the simple right to fields from their husbands. First, women's rights to property obtained from men may be coupled with other rights and obligations. In many ethnic groups, women have share rights to the harvest of their …

A Socio-Legal History Of Florida's Juvenile Transfer Reforms, Henry George White, Charles E. Frazier, Lonn Lanza-Kaduce

University of Florida Journal of Law & Public Policy

This article is intended to provide a socio-legal history of the transfer laws in Florida, not only the recent reforms but also transfer provisions dating back nearly fifty years. Multiple changes involving a mix of instrumental expressive, and systems or institutional factors have occurred during this time. The goals of our analysis are to explore the underlying reasons for Florida’s transfer reforms in particular and to improve our understanding of the dynamics of legal reform in general.

Juvenile Transfers In Florida: The Worst Of The Worst?, Lonn Lanza-Kaduce, Charles E. Frazier, Donna M. Bishop

University of Florida Journal of Law & Public Policy

The purpose of this article is to examine what is needed to assess the issues of fairness and effectiveness, which are central to the rationales underpinning transfer policies. We start by considering the adequacy of the data that most often used to learn about transfer. We then report the findings from an in-depth study of local records. This field research illustrates how complex information gathering is on matters relevant to transfer. We then use the more detailed processing information gained from our study of local records to profile transfer cases and assess the comparability between criminal court transfers and their …

Analyzing Juvenile Justice Policy: A Critical Review, Tonya Aultman-Bettridge Jan 1999

Analyzing Juvenile Justice Policy: A Critical Review, Tonya Aultman-Bettridge

University of Florida Journal of Law & Public Policy

This article reviews a variety of perspectives that have been applied to the study of the juvenile justice system in more recent years. While not meant as an exhaustive summary of the literature on juvenile justice, this article outlines a number of different frames of reference that have been used in the analysis of policies aimed at chronic, serious and/or violent juveniles offenders, with a particular emphasis on framing the nature of the current controversy and debate. Starting with the social science of 1970s, which supported the “nothing works” doctrine of juvenile offender treatment, this work review and summarizes existing …

Part II provides a historical background on how urban ghettos were formed in the United States. Part III discusses the Kerner Commission’s findings and the recommendations it made to President Lyndon Johnson and the American people. Part IV analyzes the social and economic regression experienced by inner-city communities during the past thirty years. Part V discusses the findings of the Eisenhower Foundation and describes the programs it espouses.

Finally, part VI, outlines recommendations on how the United …

The Appeal Provision Of Florida's Criminal Punishment Code: Unwise And Unconstitutional, Robert Batey, Stephen M. Everhart Jan 1999

The Appeal Provision Of Florida's Criminal Punishment Code: Unwise And Unconstitutional, Robert Batey, Stephen M. Everhart

University of Florida Journal of Law & Public Policy

This article addresses whether this startling new appeal provision in Florida’s Criminal Punishment Code is constitutional: Can the state give itself the right to appeal downward departure sentences but deny the reciprocal right of the defendant to appeal upward departure sentences? Part II of this article sets the background for answering this question by briefly sketching the history of sentencing guidelines in Florida, and how the new appeal provision undermines the wise policy behind those guidelines. Part III then outlines the infirmities of the new appeal provision under the double jeopardy, right-to-appeal, due process, and proportionality provisions of both the …

In Order To Hire The Best Person For The Job, We Have To What?, Brian John Halliday Jan 1999

In Order To Hire The Best Person For The Job, We Have To What?, Brian John Halliday

University of Florida Journal of Law & Public Policy

This Article will examine the numerous claims of U.S. employers that they cannot fill professional-level job openings with home-grown U.S. workers, and the complaints of those who oppose the importation of foreign professional labor. By shedding some light on these broad questions, we should put into proper perspective the motivating elements behind our ever-changing United States immigration laws, separating the valid impetuses from the rhetoric. This should serve to paint a clearer picture of the actual state of affairs affecting our labor needs, and to suggest courses of action designed to stabilize and to correct the U.S. employment-based immigration system. …

The Book-To-Market And Size Effects In A General Asset Pricing Model: Evidence From Seven National Markets;, Neal Maroney, Aris Protopapadakis Jan 1999

The Book-To-Market And Size Effects In A General Asset Pricing Model: Evidence From Seven National Markets;, Neal Maroney, Aris Protopapadakis

Department of Economics and Finance Working Papers, 1991-2006

We find a positive relation between returns and Book-to Market ratio (BE/ME) and a negative relation between returns and Market Value (MVE) in all the countries we study. The BE/ME and MVE "effects" are international in character and remain strong under a general stochastic pricing function that does not depend on a specific asset pricing model and avoids potentially serious simultaneity biases inherent in the Fama & French three-factor model. Finally, potentially important macro and financial variables that we add to the pricing functions do not offer an explanation of the BE/ME effect.

Intra-Industry Reactions Of Stock Split Announcements;, Oranee Tawatnuntachai, Ranjan D'Mello Jan 1999

Intra-Industry Reactions Of Stock Split Announcements;, Oranee Tawatnuntachai, Ranjan D'Mello

Department of Economics and Finance Working Papers, 1991-2006

This paper examines whether favorable information conveyed by stock split announcements transfers to non-splitting firms within the same industry. We find that there exists intra-industry reaction; shareholders of non-splitting firms experience significant positive abnormal returns during the stock split announcement period of their industry counterparts. In addition, we find that industry-wide (level of concentration) and firm-specific characteristics (degree of similarity with the splitting firm, level of asymmetric information, and mispricing) are important determinants in explaining the impact of the announcements on non-splitting firms. We further document an increase in earnings subsequent to the announcements which is associated to the stock …

Plans, Planning And Tragic Choices, John Foley, Mickey Lauria Jan 1999

Plans, Planning And Tragic Choices, John Foley, Mickey Lauria

College of Urban and Public Affairs (CUPA) Working Papers, 1991-2000

Historic preservation is seen frequently as a neutral and beneficial activity important in its attempt to protect for future generations the links with their cultural past. When a population is marked by diversity, however, it becomes necessary to consider how different racial or ethnic groups perceive historic preservation so that what is being preserved is not just a reminder of a history of segregation. Preservation cannot be based only on the values of particular groups who may have no special connection with the area in which they live. When this is so, it may further reinforce inequalities with regard to …

Analysis Of The Gal-Chen–Zhang Single-Doppler Velocity Retrieval, Steven Lazarus, Alan Shapiro, Kelvin Droegemeier Jan 1999

Analysis Of The Gal-Chen–Zhang Single-Doppler Velocity Retrieval, Steven Lazarus, Alan Shapiro, Kelvin Droegemeier

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

The authors present herein an analysis of a single-Doppler velocity retrieval (SDVR) technique whereby the unobserved wind components are determined from single-Doppler radar data. The analysis is designed to provide information about the behavior and/or sensitivity of the SDVR scheme as a function of various internal and external parameters as well as about observational errors and weights. Results presented for retrieval of both the mean and local flow indicate that the SDVR breaks down if the reflectivity gradient vanishes or if a reflectivity isoline is locally perpendicular to the radar beam. In the absence of reflectivity or radial velocity errors, …
