Integrated Computational Chemistry System For Catalysts Design, Salai Cheettu Ammal, S. Takami, M. Kubo, A. Miyamoto

Faculty Publications

The understanding of valuable catalytic and adsorptive properties of heterogeneous catalysts at atomic and electronic levels is essential for the design of novel catalysts. Computer simulation studies can significantly contribute to provide a rational interpretation of the observed experimental results and suggest modification of new catalysts. Our recent work on the application of integrated computer simulation methods to investigate the structure and catalytic properties of solid surfaces including zeolites, transition metals and their oxides have been reviewed in this paper. We have emphasized the effectivity and applicability of integrated computer simulation system to solve the problems in a variety of …

Limnological Study Of Zealand Pond, White Mountains, New Hampshire, Anne Lefevre Jan 1999

Limnological Study Of Zealand Pond, White Mountains, New Hampshire, Anne Lefevre

Center for Freshwater Biology

Zealand Pond, New Hampshire, was chosen as the site of a remote lake study. Data were collected between July 18 and August 29,1997. Zealand Pond had a relatively high pH (6.3-6.9) and alkalinity (2.3- 3.1 mg CaCO3 /liter), considering its small size and elevation (752 m). The lake was not thermally stratified, presumably due to its shallow depth and exposure to wind. Zealand Pond had a diverse zooplankton community, with two calanoid copepod species (Hesperodiaptomus wilsonae and Leptodiaptomus ashlandi), two cyclopoid copepods (Mesocyclops edax and Ectocyclops phaleratus), six cladoceran species (Daphnia ambigua, Daphnia pulex, Ceriodaphnia reticulata, Bosmina longirostris, Alona costata, …

Historical Epistemology, Jesus’ Resurrection, And The Shroud Of Turin, Gary R. Habermas

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

In contemporary studies on the Shroud of Turin, much attention, with good reason, has focused on the crucial roles contributed by sciences like physics, chemistry, and medical analyses. Doubtless, these and related inquiries have contributed more than any others in attempting to solve one of the greatest modern puzzles.

Here we will examine another avenue that is seldom pursued, but which offers some crucial insights for this subject: philosophy of history and its cognate, historical investigation. We will argue that well known principles in these disciplines can also assist us in arriving at some significant distinctions that are centrally relevant …

Hannah More And The Evangelical Influence On The English Novel, Karen Swallow Prior Jan 1999

Hannah More And The Evangelical Influence On The English Novel, Karen Swallow Prior

Faculty Dissertations

Hannah More was a significant literary, political, and social figure of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Ample evidence exists that More's only novel, Coelebs in Search of a Wife (1808), played a significant role in increasing the popularity and acceptability of the genre of the novel. Yet, More's rightful place in the story of the "rise of the novel" has been largely overlooked in literary criticism today.

This dissertation examines the life, work, and influence of Hannah More, an Evangelical Anglican, feminist, and social reformer. Emphasis is placed on those aspects of her life that demonstrate More's unique …

How Subject Characteristics Influence Attention Task Performance: A Structural Modeling Approach, Kristen A. Mckiernan Jan 1999

How Subject Characteristics Influence Attention Task Performance: A Structural Modeling Approach, Kristen A. Mckiernan

Open Access Dissertations

This research project presented and tested a theoretical model of auditory sustained attention. The model includes the personal, or subject characteristics that are believed to influence a person's ability to sustain attention. These characteristics are positive affect, negative affect, motivation, arousal, and concentration. Auditory sustained attention is represented by performance on a computerized continuous performance test (CPT); the CPT is widely used in both research and clinical settings. Three hundred and eleven participants were recruited for this study. Data from 286 of them were included in these analyses. All participants received some form of course credit for their participation. The …

Spatial Patterns In Ocean Color And Temperature Maps: Fronts, Fractals, And Ecological Considerations, Christine Chan Jan 1999

Spatial Patterns In Ocean Color And Temperature Maps: Fronts, Fractals, And Ecological Considerations, Christine Chan

Open Access Dissertations

Heterogeneity in ocean patterns is at once intriguing and problematic. Processes such as primary production or mixing occur on a range of scales in time and in space; variability must be captured at appropriate scales with tools flexible enough to detect changes in pattern-generating processes. Frontal and fractal analyses were applied to satellite-derived sea surface temperature and ocean color imagery to describe patterns in Northwestern Atlantic shelf and slope seas. On a seasonal scale, climatological thermal fronts were most frequent in winter and were found on the continental shelf south of the NY Bight and alongshore in the Gulf of …

Secured Transactions History: The Impact Of Textile Machinery On The Chattel Mortgage Acts Of The Northeast, George Lee Flint Jr Jan 1999

Secured Transactions History: The Impact Of Textile Machinery On The Chattel Mortgage Acts Of The Northeast, George Lee Flint Jr

Faculty Articles

The northeastern states passed chattel mortgage statues in the 1830s to replace the rebuttable rule acknowledging third party rights to the collateral, which created litigation to enforce a nonpossessory secured transaction. The rebuttable rule presumed that debtor possession of the collateral was fraud, but also allowed the secured party to present rebuttal evidence of his good faith in the transaction. The rebuttable rule negatively affected the textile machinery industry, allowing third parties to collect over the original creditor. In an effort to maneuver around the rebuttable rule, machinery manufacturers turned to a host of legal remedies, but eventually decided on …

Plea Bargaining And The Criminal Defendant's Obligation To Plead Guilty, Gerard V. Bradley Jan 1999

Plea Bargaining And The Criminal Defendant's Obligation To Plead Guilty, Gerard V. Bradley

Journal Articles

One criticism of plea bargaining holds that: "So long as defendants routinely expect to receive some form of sentencing consideration in exchange for an admission of guilt, the essence of a system of bargain justice is present."

Taken as a criticism ― that "bargain justice" is defective justice and that the "routine" upon which it depends should be significantly reduced, or eliminated ― this view is quite mistaken. On the assumption (which I believe to be true, but for which I do not argue here) that a large majority of the criminally accused are in reality guilty, many ― and …

Synthesis Of Benzoxazoles Containing Allyl Crosslinking Sites Via Claisen Rearrangements, Leslie K. Hutson

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The reaction of diethyl 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalate with allyl bromide/K2CO3 in DMF followed by hydrolysis provided 2,5-di(allyloxy)terephthalic acid. The conversion of 2,5-di (allyloxy)terephthalic acid to 1,4-di(2-benzoxazolyl)-2,5-di(allyloxy)benzene in PPSE was unsuccessful. However, the reaction of 1,4-di(2-benzoxazolyl)-2,5- dihydroxybenzene with allyl bromide/K2CO3 provided 1,4-di(2-benzoxazolyl)-2,5- di(allyloxy)benzene. DSC analysis indicated that 1,4-di(2-benzoxazolyl)-2,5- di(allyloxy)benzene undergoes a Claisen rearrangement to the corresponding diallyl product. The synthesis of 2-allyloxy-1,4-di(2-benzoxazolyl)benzene was carried out using 2-hydroxy-1,4-di(2-benzoxazolyl)benzene as starting material. DSC analysis was inconclusive with respect to a Claisen rearrangement. The reaction of 2-allyloxybenzoic acid with 2,2-bis(3-amino-4-hydroxyphenyl)-1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoropropane in PPSE was unsuccessful but the reaction of 2,2-bis(2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-5-benzoxazolyl)-1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoropropane with allyl bromide/K2CO3 in DMF provided 2,2-bis(2-(2- …

On Spurious Behavior Of Cfd Simulations, Helen C. Yee, J. R. Torczynski, S. A. Morton, M. R. Visbal, P. K. Sweby

United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications

Spurious behavior in underresolved grids and:or semi-implicit temporal discretizations for four computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are studied. The numerical simulations consist of (a) a 1-D chemically relaxed non-equilibrium flow model, (b) the direct numerical simulation (DNS) of 2D incompressible flow over a backward facing step, (c) a loosely coupled approach for a 2D fluid–structure interaction, and (d) a 3D unsteady compressible flow simulation of vortex breakdown on delta wings. These examples were chosen based on their non-apparent spurious behaviors that were difficult to detect without extensive grid and:or temporal refinement studies and without some knowledge from dynamical systems theory. …

The AICPA Peer Review Board is issuing this exposure draft to update the Standards for Performing and Reporting on Peer Reviews (AICPA, Professional Standards, vol. 2 PR section 100). This proposal: 1. Replaces the term "on-site peer review" with "systemic review" in order to more accurately describe this type of peer review. On a systemic review, the reviewer expresses an opinion on the firm's system of quality control (page 7). 2. Changes the definition of engagements that require a firm to have an on-site (systemic) review. Firms that perform services listed in paragraph 4 of the Standards (which includes review …

This proposed Statement on Auditing Standards (SAS) amends various SASs and consists of the following three parts: Part 1, Audit Adjustments; Part 2, Reporting on Consistency; and Part 3, Service Organizations. Part 1 AUDIT ADJUSTMENTS: The amendments in part 1 of this proposed SAS are being issued to establish audit requirements that would encourage audit clients to record financial statement adjustments proposed by auditors in audits of financial statements. The Auditing Standards Board (ASB) believes such requirements would improve the financial statement reporting process. Part 1 of this proposed SAS would amend three SASs to establish audit requirements that clarify …
