Determination Of Patent Blue V And Carmoisine In Gelatine Desserts By Derivative Spectrophotometry, Yüksel Özdemi̇r, Ayşe Arzu Akkan

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

A first-derivative spectrophotometric method was developed for quantitative determination of two synthetic organic dyes, Carmoisine and Patent Blue V, which are under governmental regulations all over the world because of their toxicity and carcinogenity. In this study, Carmoisine and Patent Blue V were simultaneously determined in their binary mixtures by first-derivative spectrophotometry. The method was applied to different gelatine desserts. The first-derivative derivative method did not eliminate turbid background in the samples. A simple background correction procedure involving a C_{18}-cartridge sample preparation step was developed for determination of dyes in gelatine dessert by first-derivative spectrophotometry. The C_{18}-cartridge sample preparation step …

Acidity Of Silica-Alumina Catalysts By Amine Titration Using Hammett Indicators And Ft-Ir Study Of Pyridine Adsorption, Mürüvvet Yurdakoç, Mehmet Akçay, Yalçin Tonbul, Kadi̇r Yurdakoç Jan 1999

Acidity Of Silica-Alumina Catalysts By Amine Titration Using Hammett Indicators And Ft-Ir Study Of Pyridine Adsorption, Mürüvvet Yurdakoç, Mehmet Akçay, Yalçin Tonbul, Kadi̇r Yurdakoç

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

In this study, characterization and surface acidity of Siral (SiO_2-Al_2O_3) compounds were investigated with Hammett acidity functions, the n-butylamine titration method and FTIR analysis of the spectra of pyridine adsorption. All the samples had an acid strength of H_0\leq+2.8. The calculated total amount of acid of the samples increased with the increase in SiO_2 content up to Siral 40 and then decreased sharply in the case of Siral 80. Maximum amount of acidity was observed in the case of Siral 40 as 1.37mmole/g. No evidence was found for a band at 1540 cm^{-1} on Pural indicating that there were no …

Searching For The Structural Vision Of City Of Boerne V. Flores: Vertical And Horizontal Tensions In The New Constitutional Architecture, Thomas W. Beimers

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

During the Rehnquist Court, America has witnessed accelerating federal judicial activism on behalf of States' rights, and a judicial branch that increasingly views itself as final arbiter of the proper allocation of power between the federal and State governments. Apologists for this trend identify it closely with perceived structural checks embedded in the Constitution, which are designed to ensure greater participatory access in self-governance. Despite this laudable goal, federalism-based precedents appear to conflict with civil rights legislation, such as the Americans With Disabilities Act and the Age Discrimination In Employment Act.

This article attempts to reconcile this apparent conflict by …

Health Plan Quality: Factors Influencing Hospital Participation In Health Plans, Robert Latimer Barber Jan 1999

Health Plan Quality: Factors Influencing Hospital Participation In Health Plans, Robert Latimer Barber

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

The professional and popular literatures are full of reports of surveys and studies purporting to rate health plans. Health maintenance organizations and other organizations are surveying member satisfaction. Accreditation of health plans is receiving increased attention. Interest is growing in plans' performance in the areas measured by the Health Plan Employers' Data and Information Set (HEDIS). The factors measured in current ratings and accreditation systems are not important to hospitals for evaluating health plan participation. There are factors in a health plan's performance that are important to and either beneficial or detrimental to hospitals. This paper proposes factors upon which …

Into The Dustbin Of History? The Evaluation And Preservation Of Slavic Materials, Bradley L. Schaffner, Brian J. Baird Jan 1999

Into The Dustbin Of History? The Evaluation And Preservation Of Slavic Materials, Bradley L. Schaffner, Brian J. Baird

Staff and Faculty Work

One of the greatest challenges facing area studies librarians today is preservation of collections. Area studies collections in libraries, the backbone of international studies programs for most colleges and universities in North America, are in danger. Most materials in these collections were published on acidic paper and poorly bound leaving them susceptible to rapid deterioration. Slavic collections, for example, appear to be in dire need of preservation treatment, but there is very little hard data on the scope of the problem. This research project, conducted at the University of Kansas Libraries, is the first step toward gaining a better understanding …

Weak Localization In Disordered Two-Dimensional Crystals With Half-Filled Band, E.P. Nakhmedov, T. Kaya Jan 1999

Weak Localization In Disordered Two-Dimensional Crystals With Half-Filled Band, E.P. Nakhmedov, T. Kaya

Turkish Journal of Physics

Effect of subtitutional impurities on electron localization in two dimensional (2D) lattice near the middle of the band is studied. Calculation of density of the electronic states, \rho (\varepsilon ), increases logaritmically in the middle of the band. This singularity in the density of states of noninteracting electron gas on lattice gives rise to anomalous dependencies of thermodynamic quantities on the temperature. The quantum correction to the conductivity of a nonintreracting electron gas due to Umklapp electron--impurity scattering is calculated. This correction to the conductivity is shown to compete with that from the localization corrrection for a Normal scattering process. …

Mpijava: An Object-Oriented Java Interface To Mpi, Mark Baker, Bryan Carpenter, Geoffrey C. Fox, Sung Hoon Ko Jan 1999

Mpijava: An Object-Oriented Java Interface To Mpi, Mark Baker, Bryan Carpenter, Geoffrey C. Fox, Sung Hoon Ko

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

A basic prerequisite for parallel programming is a good communication API. The recent interest in using Java for scientific and engineering application has led to several international efforts to produce a message passing interface to support parallel computation. In this paper we describe and then discuss the syntax, functionality and performance of one such interface, mpiJava, an object-oriented Java interface to MPI. We first discuss the design of the mpiJava API and the issues associated with its development. We then move on to briefly outline the steps necessary to 'port' mpiJava onto a range of operating systems, including Windows NT, …

Building Distributed Systems For The Pragmatic Object Web, Geoffrey C. Fox, Wojtek Furmanski, Tomasz Haupt Jan 1999

Building Distributed Systems For The Pragmatic Object Web, Geoffrey C. Fox, Wojtek Furmanski, Tomasz Haupt

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

We review the growing power and capability of commodity computing and communication technologies largely driven by commercial distributed information systems. These systems are built from CORBA, Microsoft's COM, JavaBeans, and rapidly advancing Web approaches. One can abstract these to a three-tier model with largely independent clients connected to a distributed network of servers. The latter host various services including object and relational databases and of course parallel and sequential computing. High performance can be obtained by combining concurrency at the middle server tier with optimized parallel back end services. The resultant system combines the needed performance for large-scale HPCC applications …

Mpijava 1.2: Api Specification, Bryan Carpenter, Geoffrey C. Fox, Sung-Hoon Ko, Sang Lim

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

This document defines the API of mpiJava, a Java language binding for MPI 1.1. The document is not a standalone specification of the behaviour of MPI--it is meant to be read in conjunction with the MPI standard document [2]. Subsections are laid out in the same way as in the standard document, to allow cross-referencing. Where the mpiJava binding makes no significant change to a particular section of the standard document, we will just note here that there are no special issues for the Java binding. This does not mean that the corresponding section of the standard is irrelevant to …

Internetics: Technologies, Applications And Academic Field, Or, Parallel Computing And Computational Science Do Not Quite Work, Geoffrey C. Fox Jan 1999

Internetics: Technologies, Applications And Academic Field, Or, Parallel Computing And Computational Science Do Not Quite Work, Geoffrey C. Fox

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

Ten years ago, we were all sure that parallel computing technology and the interdisciplinary academic field of computational science would be center pieces of both academic and economic growth. We show that this insight was, in principle, correct but was an incomplete vision for large-scale computation implies both increased computer power and increasing numbers of users and applications. Parallel computing undoubtedly works on essentially all problems, but we were unable to produce deployable software systems. Further, few industries could achieve adequate return to justify investment in parallel computers, except in a few areas such as databases. Computational science is the …

Reader Identification And Alienation In The Legal Rhetoric Of The Pentateuch, James W. Watts Jan 1999

Reader Identification And Alienation In The Legal Rhetoric Of The Pentateuch, James W. Watts

Religion - All Scholarship

Three voices dominate Pentateuchal discourse in turn: the omniscient narrator relates the stories of Genesis and Exodus, YHWH delivers the laws of Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers, and Moses combines narrative and law in the rhetoric of Deuteronomy. These three dominant voices of the Pentateuch are interdependent and almost interchangeable: the anonymous narrator, like Moses the scribe, requires both divine inspiration and reader acceptance for authorization of the story; the divine lawgiver requires reader acceptance of human mediation of the commandments; the prophetic scribe depends on authority delegated by both God and readers to interpret the stories, the laws, and the …
