The Effect Of Exercise On Immune Function In Equids., Robert William Folsom
The Effect Of Exercise On Immune Function In Equids., Robert William Folsom
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The effect of exercise stress on immune modulation and the mechanisms involved were examined in ponies and horses subjected to a strenuous treadmill-based exercise program. The magnitude of changes in exercise-induced cortisol production, lactate, and immunomodulation increased with increases in exercise intensity and the highest levels of each were seen in animals that attained heart rates greater than 200 bpm. Influenza vaccinated ponies and horses were exercised at heart rates greater than 200 bpm for 5 consecutive days and stress tests were performed on days 1 and 5. Exercised animals exhibited significant increases in plasma lactate, plasma cortisol, LAK cell …

Characterization Of The Microsomal Mixed -Function Oxidase System Of Several Species Of Sea Anemones (Phylum: Cnidaria)., Linda Marie Heffernan
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Several studies have demonstrated detrimental effects of anthropogenic compounds on coral reef communities. These compounds are known to be bioaccumulated rapidly, but eliminated slowly by anthozoans (i.e., corals and sea anemones). The cytochrome P450-dependent mixed function oxidase (MFO) system is the primary pathway for initial oxidation of many hydrophobic exogenous compounds; however, its presence had not been well documented in anthozoans. The studies reported herein show that a functional cytochrome P450-dependent MFO is present in the microsomal fraction of the sea anemones Anthopleura xanthogrammica , A. elegantissima, and Bunodosoma cavernata . The evidence is based on the presence of classical …

Systematics Of The Common Garter Snake, Thamnophis Sirtalis., John Jeffrey Boundy
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Character variation was examined in the snake Thamnophis sirtalis . Initially, 187 characters were examined on five populations (OTUs). Only 12% of the characters failed to show geographic variation by ANOVA. A reduced data set of 72 characters remained after eliminating those that were invariant and correlated. The reduced data set was analyzed for interpopulation variation between 37 OTUs, of T. sirtalis. Numbers of significantly differentiated characters between OTUs, determined by ANOVA, were used to generate a UPGMA tree. The tree placed Texas and Chihuahuan populations as sister groups to all other OTUs, and grouped OTUs from west of the …
Reduction Of Endogenous Bacteria Associated With Catfish (Ictalurus Punctatus) Fillets Using The Grovac Process., Milton Ruben Ramos
Reduction Of Endogenous Bacteria Associated With Catfish (Ictalurus Punctatus) Fillets Using The Grovac Process., Milton Ruben Ramos
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Fresh catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) fillets (CF) can serve as vehicles for spoilage and pathogenic bacteria. Concern for the microbiological safety of chilled CF has grown lately because psychrotrophic pathogens can survive and grow at refrigeration temperatures. The Grovac method, a new, patented (U.S. 5,543,163) process is being used in an attempt to reduce the growth of pathogens and spoilage microorganisms in CF. This process involves the using of a process solution of ascorbic acid (AA) and sodium chloride (NaCl), vacuum and tumbling. Specific objectives of this study included the isolation and identification of endogenous microflora associated with fresh whole catfish …
Sire Selection And Mating Practices In United States Dairy Herd Improvement Association Holstein Herds., Asiye Yilmaz
Sire Selection And Mating Practices In United States Dairy Herd Improvement Association Holstein Herds., Asiye Yilmaz
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Over two million Holstein mating records was used to investigate selection and mating practices. Population statistics revealed non-random mating and selection. Herd production level was associated with higher breeding value sires and price paid per unit of semen. The decision to use an Artificial Insemination (AI) sire or natural service sire was studied and a discriminant function was derived that accurately categorized matings in a test data set of 117,000 observations, with an error rate less than 2.5 percent. Discriminating variables were herd production level, lactation number, service number, breeding month, cow status code, and days in milk at breeding. …
Practicing Freedom With Care: The Development Of Warrior-Caregiving In Contemporary Literature From The Americas., Joanna Barszewska Marshall
Practicing Freedom With Care: The Development Of Warrior-Caregiving In Contemporary Literature From The Americas., Joanna Barszewska Marshall
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Taking my cue from Toni Morrison's Playing in the Dark, I read three contemporary Black writers in the Americas---George Lamming, Barbados; Michelle Cliff, Jamaica; and Jess Mowry, United States---for signs of a response that was ignored when prevailing conceptions of freedom were formulated in early America. Suggesting that the vision embodied in the name of one plantation, Sans Souci, characterized attempts to deal with the anxieties of a slaveholding free republic, I argue that these writers provide an alternative vision by attempting to reconcile the practices of freedom and care, and I engage their vision in dialogue with several theoretical …
How The Villanelle's Form Got Fixed., Julie Ellen Kane
How The Villanelle's Form Got Fixed., Julie Ellen Kane
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This work debunks the myth of the villanelle as a "fixed poetic form" dating back to the sixteenth century or earlier and replaces it with a new-historical account of how a semi-improvisatory musico-poetic genre, the choral-dance lyric, was "translated" across ruptures in lyric technology between oral, manuscript, and print cultures. The "fixity" of the villanelle's written form is shown to be not a matter of long-standing "heritage" or "tradition," but the result of deliberate actions taken by one eighteenth- and one nineteenth-century individual who inserted less-than-truthful passages into otherwise "authoritative" prosodic treatises. Chapter 1 identifies the literary sources responsible for …
Sediment-Air Partitioning Of Hydrophobic Organic Chemicals., Guilhem De Seze
Sediment-Air Partitioning Of Hydrophobic Organic Chemicals., Guilhem De Seze
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Contaminated sediments that become exposed to the air as a result of dredging or water receding are potential sources of emissions of toxic compounds to the atmosphere. Exposure models are currently being developed to assess the risk associated with this pathway of contaminant release and to design efficient remediation techniques. A critical parameter in these emission models is the equilibrium partition coefficient of the contaminant between the sediment and the air. In this study, the sediment-air equilibrium partitioning of a polymiclear aromatic hydrocarbon (phenanthrene) and a heterocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (dibenzofuran) was investigated. Both classes of compounds are commonly found in …

An Annotated Checklist And Key To Hermit Crabs Of Tampa Bay, Florida, And Surrounding Waters, Karen M. Strasser, W. Wayne Price
Gulf and Caribbean Research
Fourteen species of hermit crabs, belonging to 5 genera, were identified from 35 stations in Tampa Bay and adjacent continental shelf waters. Ninety-two samples were taken from the intertidal zone to 15 m with a variety of gear including dip nets, trawls, dredges, and hand collections using SCUBA. Pagurus maclaughlinae, Pagurus longicarpus, and Pagurus pollicaris were distributed throughout the bay. These species were often sympatric, and were commonly found in seagrass beds, sandy substrates, and sand/mud substrates, respectively. Clibanarius vittatus, Pagurus gymnodactylus, and Pagurus stimpsoni inhabited the higher salinity waters of the bay entrance. Paguristes sp., …

Spatial Learning Of An Escape Task By Young Corn Snakes, Elaphe Guttata Guttata, David A. Holtzman, Terrence W. Haris, Guillermo Aranguren, Elizabeth Bostock
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Spatial learning is critical to most animals for many behaviours necessary to survival. In vertebrates, most studies on spatial learning and memory have been conducted in mammalian and avian species with few studies on reptiles. We examined spatial learning in the corn snake, Elaphe guttata guttata by training 17 young snakes to find the one open shelter in an eight-hole arena, where the entrance was not visible from the arena surface. Over a 16-trial, 4-day training period, snakes showed (1) a significant decrease in the mean latency to the goal, (2) a significant decrease in the mean total distance travelled, …
Androgyny Or Catastrophe: Doris Lessing's Vision In The Early 1970s, Nancy Topping Bazin
Androgyny Or Catastrophe: Doris Lessing's Vision In The Early 1970s, Nancy Topping Bazin
English Faculty Publications
Doris Lessing's novels of the early 1970s offer readers a rare kind of wisdom one which has been nourished by Sufism, a form of Islamic mysticism, which she admires. Unlike Lessing's earlier fiction which was simply influenced by the ideas of Sufism, three of her novels-Briefing for a Descent into Hell (1971), The Summer Before the Dark (1973), and The Memoirs of a Survivor (1974)-are literally Sufi fables-that is, symbolic stories, each of which "illuminates truth" (qtd. in Shah, The Sufis 14). The Sufi truth illuminated by these novels is that "life is One," and that because we have …

The Cause And Consequence Of Ontogenetic Changes In Social Aggregation In New Zealand Spiny Lobsters, Mark J. Butler Iv, Alistair B. Macdiarmid, John D. Booth
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Ontogenetic changes in the behavior, spatial distribution, or habitat use of a species are presumably adaptations to ecological forces that differ in their effect on various life stages. The New Zealand rock lobster Jasus edwardsii is one of several species of spiny lobster that exhibits dramatic ontogenetic shifts in sociality and spatial distribution, and we tested whether such changes are adaptive. We first surveyed several natural populations of J. edwardsii to document size-specific differences in aggregation. To determine if chemical cues discharged by conspecifics promote aggregation of certain ontogenetic stages, we tested the responsiveness of lobsters of 3 ontogenetic stages …

Brain Sex: How The Media Report And Distort Brain Research, Janet M. Bing
English Faculty Publications
Testosterone gives men a particular advantage in that it is focusing and galvanizing a brain that is already, by its very structure, more focused than the female. Remember that the male brain is a tidier affair, each function in its special place . . . Biology, then, every bit as much as social conditioning, militates against a strongly feminine role in areas traditionally regarded as male preserves.

Reproductive Biology, Food Habits, And Forage Ratios Of The Candy Darter, Etheostoma Osburni, In The Cherry River, West Virginia, With An Analysis Of Mitochondrial Dna, Ann Elizabeth Schoolcraft
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Etheostoma osburni, the candy darter, is endemic to the lower New River drainage of West Virginia and Virginia and Gauley River drainage of West Virginia. As a result of its endemism and evidence of declining population numbers, the species has been given the status of Special Concern in both states. Candy darters occur in the Appalachian Plateau and Ridge and Valley provinces, and are influenced by different environmental selective pressures. In this study, candy darters were collected in the summer and fall of 1998 and spring of 1999 by backpack electroshocking for determination of their seasonal reproductive biology, food …

Numerical Modeling Of Thermal Refraction In Liquids In The Transient Regime, Dmitriy I. Kovsh, David J. Hagan, Eric W. Van Stryland
Faculty Bibliography 1990s
We present the results of modeling of nanosecond pulse propagation in optically absorbing liquid media. Acoustic and electromagnetic wave equations must be solved simultaneously to model refractive index changes due to thermal expansion and/or electrostriction, which are highly transient phenomena on a nanosecond time scale. Although we consider situations with cylindrical symmetry and where the paraxial approximation is valid, this is still a computation-intensive problem, as beam propagation through optically thick media must be modeled. We compare the full solution of the acoustic wave equation with the approximation of instantaneous expansion (steady-state solution) and hence determine the regimes of validity …
