Rescuing Reluctant Readers, Chris Crowe

Faculty Publications

Let me tell you about Jonathan.

He's a tall, intelligent, handsome high school junior who's taking Japanese, calculus, physics, English, and a handful of other colleg preparatory courses. While he's not a perfect student, he is diligent, usually spending two hours or more a night on homework. After school, he plays the drums for the marching band, and after that he works a couple hours each day, as a custodian at the local elementary school. He earned his Eagle Scout award about two years ago, and now in his spare time he lifts weights, practices his drums, and hangs out …

Modeling The Effects Of Doliolids On The Plankton Community Structure Of The Southeastern Us Continental Shelf, A. G. Edward Haskell, Eileen E. Hofmann, Gustav-Adolf Paffenhofer, Peter G. Verity Jan 1999

Modeling The Effects Of Doliolids On The Plankton Community Structure Of The Southeastern Us Continental Shelf, A. G. Edward Haskell, Eileen E. Hofmann, Gustav-Adolf Paffenhofer, Peter G. Verity

CCPO Publications

A model of the lower trophic levels that consists of a system of coupled ordinary differential equations was developed to investigate the time-dependent behavior of doliolid populations associated with upwelling features on the outer southeastern US continental shelf. Model equations describe the interactions of doliolids with two phytoplankton size fractions, five copepod developmental stages and a detrital pool. Additional equations describe nitrate and ammonia. Model dynamics are based primarily upon data obtained from field and laboratory experiments for southeastern US continental shelf plankton populations. Variations on a reference simulation, which represents average upwelling conditions without doliolids, were carried out to …

The Effects Of Urbanization And Human Disturbance Upon Plant Community Structure And Bird Species Richness, Diversity, And Abundance In A Natural Forested Area (Forest Park) In Portland, Oregon, Nancy Ellen Broshot Jan 1999

The Effects Of Urbanization And Human Disturbance Upon Plant Community Structure And Bird Species Richness, Diversity, And Abundance In A Natural Forested Area (Forest Park) In Portland, Oregon, Nancy Ellen Broshot

Dissertations and Theses

The effects of urbanization and continual human disturbance on the plant and avian communities of Forest Park and forested lands surrounding Portland, Oregon, were studied. I examined characteristics of plant and avian communities at 25 sites, 24 which were in Forest Park and surrounding areas and one which was in the Ancient Forest Preserve (old-growth stand) northwest of Forest Park. Data were analyzed using multiple regression, ANOV A, and Bonferonni/Dunn. Seven variables were selected representing different urbanization gradients. An additional covariable coded for the old-growth stand, allowing it to be used as a control.

Many tree variables, especially those related …

Microbial Colonization Of The Cloacae Of Nestling Tree Swallows, Tamara K. Mills, Michael P. Lombardo, Patrick A. Thorpe

Peer Reviewed Publications

Microbes have the potential to be important selective forces in many aspects of avian biology. Microbes can affect fitness as a result of either their pathogenic or beneficial effects on host health. Little is known about the chronology of microbial colonization of nestlings or the effects of microbes on fledgling condition. We set out to (1) characterize the time course of microbial colonization of the cloacae of nestling Tree Swallows (Tachycineta bicolor), (2) examine the relationship between cloacal microbes and fledgling condition, and (3) determine if nest mates had similar assemblages of cloacal microbes. We repeatedly measured nestlings …

Testing Separability Of Japanese Demand For Meat And Fish Within Differential Demandsystems, James Eales, Cathy R. Wessells Jan 1999

Testing Separability Of Japanese Demand For Meat And Fish Within Differential Demandsystems, James Eales, Cathy R. Wessells

Environmental and Natural Resource Economics Faculty Publications

The separability of meat products from fish products is investigated to gain a better understanding of Japanese consumer choices in protein demand. Rather than view fish as a single homogeneous commodity, fish and seafood are categorized into several groups of products. Separability is investigated using a demand system approach in which a generalized system of demand equations is specified and used, first to identify if any of the alternative demand structures nested within the general system are appropriate for these data, and then, conditional on those results, to test separability of meats from fish products following Moschini, Moro, and Green. …

Count The Brown Faces: Where Is The “Family” In The Family Law Of Child Protective Services, Ana M. Novoa Jan 1999

Count The Brown Faces: Where Is The “Family” In The Family Law Of Child Protective Services, Ana M. Novoa

Faculty Articles

Can a system developed from intrusion into the lives of the poor be reconstituted to provide services that will nurture the quality of the lives of all children? If not, then the system should be scrapped and start over.
Child Protective Services (CPS) has never recovered from its roots in distrust and discrimination against the poor and its mistaken defense of a false moral high-ground, which is perceived from the narrow focus of child-saving rather than on the legitimate and long term needs of children. The foster care system’s lack of concern for natural parents reflects centuries of a dual …

Response Of Tall Fescue To Saline Water As Influenced By Leaching Fractions And Irrigation Uniformity Distributions, Algirdas M Leskys Jan 1999

Response Of Tall Fescue To Saline Water As Influenced By Leaching Fractions And Irrigation Uniformity Distributions, Algirdas M Leskys

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Research was conducted to determine the impact leaching fractions (LF = drainage volume divided by irrigation volume) and irrigation uniformity distributions have on the response of tall fescue to irrigation with saline water. Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb. 'Monarch') was grown in 18 plots, each with a centrally located lysimeter that enabled estimates of evapotranspiration and irrigation requirements. Imposed treatments included setting LFs at 0.05, 0.15, or 0.25 and manipulating plot irrigation systems such that Christiansen Uniformity Coefficients (CUC) were set at 0.65, 0.75, or 0.85. Saline irrigation water (2.5 dS m{dollar}\sp{-1}{dollar}) was applied for an 18-month period. Significant LF …

Males Feeding Females During Incubation. I. Required By Microclimate Or Constrained By Nest Predation?, Thomas E. Martin, Cameron K. Ghalambor Jan 1999

Males Feeding Females During Incubation. I. Required By Microclimate Or Constrained By Nest Predation?, Thomas E. Martin, Cameron K. Ghalambor

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

Nest attentiveness (percentage of time spent on the nest) during incubation represents a parent-offspring conflict; incubating birds must balance a trade-off between caring for embryos by staying on the nest versus caring for themselves by getting off the nest to forage. For species in which females are the sole incubator, males can potentially affect this trade-off and increase nest attentiveness by feeding incubating females on the nest (incubation feeding). Increased nest attentiveness may be required when local microclimate conditions are harsh and thereby require greater incubation feeding (microclimate hypothesis). Alternatively, incubation feeding may be constrained by risk of attracting nest …

The Glint Of Gold: Press Coverage Of The Discovery Of Tutankhamun's Tomb, Jon S Arakaki Jan 1999

The Glint Of Gold: Press Coverage Of The Discovery Of Tutankhamun's Tomb, Jon S Arakaki

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Press coverage of the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb, through articles published in the London Times and New York Times from November 30, 1922 to January 31, 1923, will be analyzed. A contract between the excavators and the London Times provided the newspaper with exclusive reports and information, while the New York Times and others initially relied mainly on eye-witness accounts and second hand gossip; This study compares and contrasts different accounts of the same discovery in terms of the themes, tone, and language of relevant articles in the two newspapers. Additionally, the study includes a survey of the relationship between …

Massacre, Memoir, And Myth: The 1866 Fetterman Fight, A Reconstruction, Richard S Haynes Jan 1999

Massacre, Memoir, And Myth: The 1866 Fetterman Fight, A Reconstruction, Richard S Haynes

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Myths permeate histories of the 1866 Fetterman Fight, or Massacre. Thesis foci include myths of the 1866 Fort Laramie Treaty, the July 1866 Skirmish at Crazy Woman's Fork, Jim Bridger's role from May 1866 to spring 1867, and the December 1866 Fetterman Fight. Beginning in 1867, Colonel Carrington, Captain Fetterman's commanding officer, shifted blame from himself to Fetterman. Based upon Carrington's allegations, historical consensus indicts Captain Fetterman for arrogantly disobeying orders, foolishly leading eighty men into a fatal ambush by 1,800 Lakota, Cheyenne, and Araphoe warriors, and committing mutual suicide with Captain Brown when hope was gone. In his 1991 …

Foreign Direct Investment Flows To And From China, Rosalina Palanca-Tan Jan 1999

Foreign Direct Investment Flows To And From China, Rosalina Palanca-Tan

Economics Department Faculty Publications

The study traces the growth of direct foreign investment (DFI) inflows in China, and its distribution by sector, receiving regions and source countries. It also looks into the trends and patterns of Chinese outward direct investments. Direct investment flows into China are shown to be significantly affected by China's GDP growth rate, wage rate and exchange rate as well as the world's GDP growth rate. Policy factors play a catalytic role. China's overseas direct investment, likewise, appear to be influenced by home country (e.g.: Chinese government policies, Chinese competitive advantage) and host country (e.g., market considerations, cost and price factors, …

Characterization Of A Simian Hemorrhagic Fever Virus Large Envelope Glycoprotein Gene And Its Product., Xiaochun Wang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The goal of this project was to determine the genome organization, replication strategy and identification of the large envelope glycoprotein (GL) gene of simian hemorrhagic fever virus (SHFV). This virus is the fourth member of the new virus family Arteriviridae. The 3' end of the RNA genome from the prototype isolate of SHFV was cloned and sequenced. This 6,314 nucleotide (nt) sequence consisted of nine complete overlapping open reading frame (ORFs 2, 2a, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9). At the 5' end of this sequence is a partial ORF, ORF 1b, and the 3' end is a …

Expecting Women: Constructing The Pregnant Woman In Twentieth Century United States And British Dramatic Representation., Amelia Lynn Cuomo Jan 1999

Expecting Women: Constructing The Pregnant Woman In Twentieth Century United States And British Dramatic Representation., Amelia Lynn Cuomo

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Pregnancy and issues surrounding pregnancy such as paternity and legitimacy have been presented in Western Drama since its inception. Pregnancy in the modern era, however, has become a complex issue. Abortion, birth control, and the advent of new reproductive technologies (such as in vitro fertilization) alter understandings of reproduction. This study explores twentieth century British and U.S. dramatic representations of the pregnant woman and analyzes how pregnant women are constructed in drama. The dissertation is divided into five chapters. Chapter One explores four plays by male playwrights: Harley Granville Barker's Waste, Eugene O'Neill's "Abortion," and Sidney Kingsley's Men in White …

Ernest Renan And The Question Of Race., Jane Victoria Dagon Jan 1999

Ernest Renan And The Question Of Race., Jane Victoria Dagon

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Racism in France can be traced back to the 1560's when the nobles claimed to be of a separate race in order to obtain special rights and privileges. Soon after in the seventeenth century, scientists started to classify humans according to physical features. With the increase in travel, the slave trade, the fear of the unknown and the fear of contamination, these factors along with physiognomy and phrenology encouraged "biological racism." During the second half of the nineteenth century, Ernest Renan (1823--1892) denounces biological racism and the existence of the so-called "pure races." He is also the first dramatist to …

Situational Frequency And Retrieval: The Effect Of Revelation On The Judgments For Occurrence Of Events., Craig Barton Neely Jan 1999

Situational Frequency And Retrieval: The Effect Of Revelation On The Judgments For Occurrence Of Events., Craig Barton Neely

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Only one prior experiment has examined the effect of revelation on situational frequency judgments (Exp. 3, Greene, 1996). In the current study, three experiments examined the effect of revelation on frequency estimation. Experiment 1A and 1B replicated and extended the study done by Greene (1996) by increasing the frequencies of study items from one to eight in both a random (1A) and blocked (1B) design. Experiment 2 examined the relation between the frequency of study items and the degree of distortion of the items revealed at test. A significant effect of revelation was found across frequencies for the three revealed …

Georges Henein, Poete Des Marges., Evelyne M. Bornier Jan 1999

Georges Henein, Poete Des Marges., Evelyne M. Bornier

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation explores the Franco-Egyptian cultural and literary interactions in the mid-20th century, and examines the importance of these exchanges in the writings and intellectual journey of poet Georges Henein (1914--1973). This study is divided into three chapters. In a first chapter, I define the origins and stakes of a francophone Egyptian movement born from a small group of intellectuals of various cultures, who embraced French as their lingua franca. I explore this movement from a socio-historical and literary point of view, and through an overview of the period (1910--1962), lay the ground to a study of Egyptian-born writer Georges …

A Comprehensive Functional Assessment Of The Effects Of Methylphenidate On The Disruptive Behavior Of Children With Severe Mental Retardation., Victoria C. Swanson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Methylphenidate (MPH) has proven efficacy with the disruptive behaviors of children with ADHD in regular education settings (Gully and Northup, 1997; Northup et el., 1999; in press). Blum, Mauk, McComas, and Mace (1996) researched the separate and combined effects of behavioral and MPH treatments on the task engagement and disruptive behavior of 3 children with severe to profound mental retardation. This study used a single-subject, multielement or alternating treatment design to assess the separate and combined effects of MPH and behavioral treatments on the performance of 5 children with severe to profound mental retardation. MPH effects were evaluated within and …
