Physicochemical Influences On Parasites Of Age-0 Largemouth Bass In The Atchafalaya River Basin, Louisiana, Randy C. Landry, William E. Kelso
Faculty Publications
We investigated prevalence and intensity patterns of nine parasite taxa in 244 age-0 largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) collected from lake (high dissolved oxygen levels), riverine (high current velocities), and swamp (hypoxic canals and bayous) sites (N=6) in the Atchafalaya River Basin during the 1996 flood pulse. Ectoparasites were dominated by monogenetic trematodes (prevalence=100%; median intensities 27–91 per host) and glochidia (prevalence > 96% at all sites, median intensities 47–148 per host), whereas Posthodiplostomum minimum (Trematoda), Caecincola spp. (Trematoda; C. parvulus and perhaps C. latostoma), Neoechinorhynchus cylindratus (Acanthocephala), and Proteocephalus ambloplitis (Cestoda) accounted for 94.6% of bass endoparasites. Overall, lake sites supported …
Conservation Ethics: The Web Linking Human And Environmental Rights, Meghan Sittler
Conservation Ethics: The Web Linking Human And Environmental Rights, Meghan Sittler
Nebraska Anthropologist
The Earth should be seen as an ecological whole. Environmental and human rights should be fashioned in a similar horizontal plane rather than in the traditional concept of a vertically arranged hierarchy. Examining the management practices of vast ecosystems on two continents provides examples of the integral relationship of all organisms in an ecosystem. The Serengeti Ecosystem in Africa and the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem in the United States are characterized by both cultural and ecological extirpations. The comparing of cultural and ecological issues concerning these diverse and distinctive ecosystems demonstrates the intricate web connecting human and environmental rights.

Still An Open Book: Analysis Of The Current Pre-Clovis Vs. Clovis Debate From The Site Of Meadowcroft Rockshelter, Pennsylvania And Monte Verde, Chile, Jay T. Sturdevant
Nebraska Anthropologist
One of the most prominent features of Paleo-Indian studies has been the debate concerning who first inhabited the continents of the Americas. Two sites that have been at the forefront of this debate over the last 25 years are Meadowcroft Rockshelter, Pennsylvania and Monte Verde, Chile. Because of their status as possible Pre-Clovis sites, a review of the questions surrounding these sites should reflect the current status of the Pre-Clovis debate. Presently neither site has been able to make a decisive argument for a Pre-Clovis occupation in the Americas so it is important that archaeology not get ahead of itself …

The Collecting Culture: An Exploration Of The Collector Mentality And Archaeology's Response, Tamie Sawaged
Nebraska Anthropologist
The collecting of cultural remains and the looting of sites have serious repercussions for the preservation of the archaeological record. The scientific community has long bemoaned this situation but has developed few effective, proactive measures to stem the activities of collectors and looters. This lack of success can be attributed partially to a failure in researching and understanding the driving forces behind the collecting phenomenon. Thus, this paper has several main goals: to provide the archaeologist with some basic understanding of the collecting culture from the collector's perspective; to encourage the use of an integrated, multidisciplinary approach to address this …

The Daishonin’S Path: Applying Nichiren’S Buddhist Principles To American Legal Education, John W. Teeter Jr
Faculty Articles
The fundamental aspects of Nichiren Daishonin's teachings merit modern attention. The Daishonin was a tireless mentor for his disciples, and his call for compassion, critique, courage, and wisdom are essential for law students and teachers alike. A remarkable man, the Daishonin's perceptions ought to inform the way professors teach and advise their students, and encourage others to reflect on their own sources of spiritual sustenance and examine the contributions they can make toward deepening the relevance, meaning, and joy of legal education.
The Daishonin emphasized the primacy of The Lotus Sutra, which declares that all living beings inherently possess the …

The Diminishing Sphere Of The Cooperative Virtues In American Law And Society, Ana M. Novoa
Faculty Articles
Exploration of destructive developments in American law and society show that family law is completely askew. Although family law deals with the most intimate and basic personal relationships, it applies a legal process based on autonomous individual public and private economic rights to those intimate relational realities. It is a hallowed expression of male virtues and a paradigmatic example of the use of the law to protect vested interests and shape society, rather than a reflection of reality.
The split between the private/family/female and the public/business/male spheres of the nineteenth century created the separation of competitive attributes, virtues, and vices …

Effect Of The Partial Substitution Of A Commercial Feed For Corn Meal On Growth Performance Of Chickens, Óscar Amilcar García Portillo
Effect Of The Partial Substitution Of A Commercial Feed For Corn Meal On Growth Performance Of Chickens, Óscar Amilcar García Portillo
Theses and Dissertations
Nutrition is a primary human need. Families often will raise their own animals to meet these nutritional needs. However, high feed costs can severely limit the viability of these small family enterprises. This study addressed ways to improve poultry production as a means for families to ameliorate their diets and increase income. Research was conducted at the Centro Universitario de Oriente (CUNORI), Chiquimula, Guatemala. For this study, commercial poultry feed was supplemented with corn flour at three treatment levels and fed to poultry. Results indicated that partial substitution of commercial feed with corn flour at these three treatment levels did …
