Equity As A Paradigm For Sustainability: Evolving The Process Toward Interspecies Equity, Gwendellyn Io Earnshaw
Equity As A Paradigm For Sustainability: Evolving The Process Toward Interspecies Equity, Gwendellyn Io Earnshaw
Animal Law Review
The concept of sustainability has evolved through a wide variety of definitions. Traditionally, sustainability was seen as a system of management which would allow humans to perpetually exploit the world's natural resources; that is, to manage resources so they would never be depleted. More recently, however, writers have argued the traditional concept of sustainability has failed because a truly sustainable system recognizes all resources and stakeholders for their inherent value. Equity is thus the essential ethic of a sustainable system. This article adopts this modern view of sustainability and identifies interspecies equity-the consideration of nonhuman animals based upon their inherent …

Animal Thing To Animal Person -- Thoughts On Time, Place, And Theories, Steven M. Wise
Animal Law Review
The rule that "animals are property," and do not merit legal rights, is ingrained in the law of English-speaking countries. Challenges to this rule must be brought in strategic, thoughtfu, sensitive, sophisticated, and coordinated ways. This essay offers seven related strategic considerationsf or anyone who wishes to battle the "animals as property" rule.

Religious Attitudes Toward Cloning: A Tale Of Two Creatures, Dena S. Davis
Law Faculty Articles and Essays
This Essay offers one analytic structure with which to approach the study of religious responses to cloning and suggests that, whereas the negative reactions are tied to a Frankenstein approach--that is, one which uses all the horror of that myth to express our fears about humans getting into the creation business--the more positive reactions express what I will call the Golem approach, based on a lesser-known legend.
Disentangling The Law Of Public Protest, Kevin F. O'Neill
Disentangling The Law Of Public Protest, Kevin F. O'Neill
Law Faculty Articles and Essays
The purpose of this Article is to alleviate the confusion that so frequently surrounds the law of public protest. Much of that confusion can be avoided, when analyzing a given case, by zeroing in on who is regulating the speech in question. There are four regulatory players, who act in four distinct settings: restrictions enacted by legislative bodies, the issuance of permits and fees by government administrators, speech-restrictive injunctions imposed by the judiciary, and the influence of police as a regulatory presence on the street. Discrete lines of precedent attend each of these players. Legislators and judges, for example, are …

Effects Of An Interactive, Literacy-Rich Environment On The Social, Language, Cognitive, And Literacy Development Of Young Children With And Without Special Needs, Jeanne M. Canelli
Educational Studies Dissertations
The purpose of this study is twofold: to identify play and literacy practices that are useful in an inclusive early childhood classroom and to demonstrate how these practices contribute to the development of children with and without disabilities. Play and literacy teaching practices are documented in this study of four preschool children. Two of the children have typical development patterns and two have mild to moderate special needs.

Influences Of Relative Humidity, Soil And Air Temperatures, And Lunar Phase On Occurrence Of Terrestrial Plethodontid Salamanders At High Elevation Sites, Jo Santiago
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Microhabitat environments and occurrences of terrestrial plethodontid salamanders including Plethodon nettingi Green, Plethodon cinereus (Green), Plethodon wehrlei Fowler and Dunn, Plethodon glutinosus (Green), and Desmognathus ochrophaeus Cope were monitored over a 15 month period at high elevation sites in the Stuart Knob area of the Monongahela National Forest in eastern West Virginia. Environmental data collected for eight equal-sized study plots (8m2 ) included relative humidity, air and soil temperatures, and lunar phase. Five hundred and twenty-five salamanders were captured in diurnal and nocturnal searches, and an additional 52 individuals were observed. It was found that the most common occurring …

Wqmap: An Integrated Three-Dimensional Hydrodynamic And Water Quality Model System For Estuarine And Coastal Applications, Malcolm L. Spaulding, Daniel L. Mendelsohn, J. Craig Swanson
Ocean Engineering Faculty Publications
WQMAP is an integrated system for modeling the circulation and water quality of estuarine and coastal waters. Tfie system includes a suite of integrated environmental models including a boundary conforming grid generation model, a three hydrodynamic model, and a suite of pollutant transport and fate models (single and multiple constituent and WASPS eutrophication kinetics). All operate on a boundary conforming grid system and are supported by an embedded geographic information system and environmental data management tools. WQMAP is configured for operation on a Pentium personal computer and features a Windows based user interface. The interface employs point and click and …

Zim1, A Maternally Expressed Mouse Kruppel-Type Zinc-Finger Gene Located In Proximal Chromosome 7, Joomyeong Kim, Xiaochen Lu, Lisa Stubbs
Faculty Publications
In analysis of a conserved region of proximal mouse chromosome 7 and human chromosome 19q, we have isolated a novel mouse gene, Zim1 (imprinted zinc-finger gene 1), encoding a typical Kruppel-type (C2H2) zinc-finger protein, located within 30 kb of a known imprinted gene, Peg3 (paternally expressed gene 3). Our studies demonstrate that Zim1 is also imprinted; the gene is expressed mainly from the maternal allele and at high levels only during embryonic and neonatal stages. In contrast to most tissues, Zim1 is expressed biallelically in neonatal and adult brain with slightly more input from the maternal allele. Zim1 produces multiple …
Ferric Iron Reduction By Bacteria Associated With The Roots Of Freshwater And Marine Macrophytes, G. M. King, Meredith A. Garey
Ferric Iron Reduction By Bacteria Associated With The Roots Of Freshwater And Marine Macrophytes, G. M. King, Meredith A. Garey
Faculty Publications
In vitro assays of washed, excised roots revealed maximum potential ferric iron reduction rates of >100 μmol g (dry weight)-1 day-1 for three freshwater macrophytes and rates between 15 and 83 μmol (dry weight)-1 day-1 for two marine species. The rates varied with root morphology but not consistently (fine root activity exceeded smooth root activity in some but not all cases). Sodium molybdate added at final concentrations of 0.2 to 20 mM did not inhibit iron reduction by roots of marine macrophytes (Spartina alterniflora and Zostera marina). Roots of a freshwater macrophyte, Sparganium eurycarpum, that were incubated with an analog …

Food Habits And Diet Overlap Of Age-1 And Older Walleye And White Bass In Lake Poinsett, South Dakota, Andrew B. Starostka
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
White bass Marone chysops and walleye Stizostedion vitreum coexist in several of the large glacial lakes in eastern South Dakota. I collected age-1 and older white bass and walleye in Lake Poinsett, South Dakota during May, July and September, 1998 to determine food habits and diet overlap using percent by weight to describe diets and Schoener's index (Cxy) to determine diet overlap. Macroinvertebrates were common prey items for white bass in all length groups during all sample dates. The primary macroinvertebrates consumed by white bass were corixids, amphipods and dipterans. Fish, as a group, were second in diet importance over …
