The Role Of Community In Two Novels By Barbara Kingsolver, Rebecca K. Calwell Jan 1999

The Role Of Community In Two Novels By Barbara Kingsolver, Rebecca K. Calwell

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Throughout her career, contemporary writer Barbara Kingsolver has written novels that appeal to both readers and critics. Beginning with The Bean Trees in 1988, through Poisonwood Bible in 1998, Kingsolver established herself as a rising star among contemporary writers. In a review of one of the Kingsolver’s books, one critic said, “It seems there is nothing she can’t do” (Smith 3).

Kingsolver sets herself apart from many of her peers in both her style and her themes. Raised in Kentucky, but now living in Arizona, she has a gift for storytelling. Her dialogue is strong, especially in its ability to …

Book Review: Pigs, Profits, And Rural Communities, Edited By Kendall M. Thu And E. Paul Durrenberger, E. Wesley F. Peterson Jan 1999

Book Review: Pigs, Profits, And Rural Communities, Edited By Kendall M. Thu And E. Paul Durrenberger, E. Wesley F. Peterson

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Early in their introductory comments, the editors of this book claim that they “are not political activists and that [they] neither promote nor defend industrial agriculture based on any political agenda” (p. 4). Industrial agriculture, as understood in this book, includes large corporations, vertically integrated firms, multinationals, and anything else that seems to differ from what might be thought of as a traditional family farm. The editors suggest that their goal is to provide objective assessments of one example of industrial agriculture, large-scale hog confinement operations. However, as the introduction progresses, strange things seem to happen to this perfectly sensible …

Hepatitis C Virus And Other Flaviviridae Viruses Enter Cells Via Low Density Lipoprotein Receptor, Vincent Agnello, György Ábel, Mutasim Elfahal, Glenn B. Knight, Qing-Xiu Zhang Jan 1999

Hepatitis C Virus And Other Flaviviridae Viruses Enter Cells Via Low Density Lipoprotein Receptor, Vincent Agnello, György Ábel, Mutasim Elfahal, Glenn B. Knight, Qing-Xiu Zhang

United States Public Health Resources

Endocytosis of the Flaviviridae viruses, hepatitis C virus, GB virus Cyhepatitis G virus, and bovine viral diarrheal virus (BVDV) was shown to be mediated by low density lipoprotein (LDL) receptors on cultured cells by several lines of evidence: by the demonstration that endocytosis of these virus correlated with LDL receptor activity, by complete inhibition of detectable endocytosis by anti-LDL receptor antibody, by inhibition with anti-apolipoprotein E and -apolipoprotein B antibodies, by chemical methods abrogating lipoproteinyLDL receptor interactions, and by inhibition with the endocytosis inhibitor phenylarsine oxide. Confirmatory evidence was provided by the lack of detectable LDL receptor on cells known …

Applying The Servant-Leadership Theory To A Native American Woman Executive., Michelle L. Jones Jan 1999

Applying The Servant-Leadership Theory To A Native American Woman Executive., Michelle L. Jones

Theses and Graduate Projects

At the time of my study, my Subject was the Director of a non-profit organization that exists to assistNative American artists in a variety of ways. The Group seeks to provide grants for artists, just as other artistic organizations do, but they go beyond that. The Group wants to assist the whole person, and so nurtures the soul as well as the artistic endeavors of the individual. Beyond this, the Group reaches out to the Native American conrmunity at large to help the people live amongst the dominant culture and retain their own culture and dignity. My Subject granted this …

Jesus Christ As Leadership Model: Servant, Charismatic, Transformational, Johnnie B. Williams Jan 1999

Jesus Christ As Leadership Model: Servant, Charismatic, Transformational, Johnnie B. Williams

Theses and Graduate Projects

While reading Servant Leadership by Robert GreenLeaf and other studies on servant leadership, the idea of comparing Jesus' life to servant leadership became an area of interest. The leadership style of Jesus seemed to be a good area for my research given my interest in religion and my course work in leadership education. Having thought of Jesus only in terms of a religious figure, it was exciting for me to explore his life and message from a different perspective. This paper is written not as the ultimate treatise on religion, because I doubt that will ever be written, but rather …

Development Of A Model Of Natural Infection With Mycobacterium Bovis In White-Tailed Deer, Mitchell V. Palmer, Diana L. Whipple, Steven C. Olsen

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

The objective of this study was to develop a suitable experimental model of natural Mycobacterium bovis infection in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), describe the distribution and character of tuberculous lesions, and to examine possible routes of disease transmission. In October 1997, 10 mature female white-tailed deer were inoculated by intratonsilar instillation of 2 3 103 (low dose) or 2 3 105 (high dose) colony forming units (CFU) of M. bovis. In January 1998, deer were euthanatized, examined, and tissues were collected 84 to 87 days post inoculation. Possible routes of disease transmission were evaluated by culture of nasal, …

In Situ Neutral Detergent Insoluble Nitrogen As A Method For Measuring Forage Protein Degradability, R. Mass, G. P. Lardy, R. J. Grant, Terry Klopfenstein Jan 1999

In Situ Neutral Detergent Insoluble Nitrogen As A Method For Measuring Forage Protein Degradability, R. Mass, G. P. Lardy, R. J. Grant, Terry Klopfenstein

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

A method of estimating the undegraded intake protein (UIP) concentration of forages was developed and validated with a series of in situ experiments. The hypothesis was that UIP calculated from in situ neutral detergent insoluble N (NDIN) is equal to total in situ N minus the microbial N that is estimated from purines (MN). The in situ disappearance rates of total in situ N (TN), MN, and NDIN were measured for six hay samples and two range masticate samples. Hypothetical rates of passage (2 or 5%/h) were used to calculate UIP (% of DM) for each N pool. Estimates of …

Availability Cascades And Risk Regulation, Cass R. Sunstein, Timur Kuran Jan 1999

Availability Cascades And Risk Regulation, Cass R. Sunstein, Timur Kuran

Articles

An availability cascade is a self-reinforcing process of collective belief formation by which an expressed perception triggers a chain reaction that gives the perception increasing plausibility through its rising availability in public discourse. The driving mechanism involves a combination of informational and reputational motives: Individuals endorse the perception partly by learning from the apparent beliefs of others and partly by distorting their public responses in the interest of maintaining social acceptance. Availability entrepreneurs- activists who manipulate the content of public discourse-strive to trigger availability cascades likely to advance their agendas. Their availability campaigns may yield social benefits, but sometimes they …

Genetic Relationships Between Visual And Objective Measures Of Carcass Composition In Crossbred Lambs, H. E. Jones, G. Simm, W. S. Dingwall, R. M. Lewis Jan 1999

Genetic Relationships Between Visual And Objective Measures Of Carcass Composition In Crossbred Lambs, H. E. Jones, G. Simm, W. S. Dingwall, R. M. Lewis

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The aim of this study was to estimate genetic and phenotypic (coroariances between objective measures and carcass visual scores, as a test of the potential value afvisual scores in selection programmes to improve carcass composition in crossbred lambs. In each of 1986, 1987 and 1988, 22 Suffolk rams were chosen with either high or low scores on an index designed to increase lean growth rate. These rams were joined with 18 to20 crossbred ewes each and theirlambs were grov.J11 on grass to one of three target live weights (35·5, 41·5 and 47·0 kg) for slaughter. The carcasses of 1881 lambs …

Changes, Anticipations, And Reparations, Saul Levmore Jan 1999

Changes, Anticipations, And Reparations, Saul Levmore

Articles

Conventional views of legal change emphasize the values of certainty and reliance, and are therefore hostile to explicitly retroactive laws. Contemporary scholarship, however, allows that a policy of aggressive legal change, with no compensation for "new losers," can encourage socially useful steps in anticipation of change. Professor Levmore argues that the anticipation-oriented approach logically extends to embrace anticipation by "new winners" and governments as well as new losers. If all parties' anticipatory incentives are considered, familiar rules, ranging from statutes of limitations to retroactivity and to compensatory payments for government takings, seem quite sensible. And if these rules are drawn …
