Feedlot Diet Roughage Level For Hereford Cattle Exposed To Excessive Heat Load1, T. L. Mader, J. B. Gaughan, B A. Young Jan 1999

Feedlot Diet Roughage Level For Hereford Cattle Exposed To Excessive Heat Load1, T. L. Mader, J. B. Gaughan, B A. Young

Haskell Agricultural Laboratory (Northeast Research and Extension Center)

In Exp. 1, six individually fed Hereford steers were exposed to hot (HOT) or thermoneutral (TNL) environmental conditions (ENV) while being adapted (stepped-up) to a finishing diet by decreasing roughage level from 55 to 10% of the diet DM over 17 d. Only at 10% roughage did heat exposure result in reduced (P

Storytelling: Artist's Books, Nancy Jo Ann Steele Jan 1999

Storytelling: Artist's Books, Nancy Jo Ann Steele

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

My thesis exhibition presents mixed media artist's books inspired by autobiographical stOlies originating from my family. These stories relate to the lives of my family and the natural environment of my home in a small-town farming community with deep Appalachian roots. With a sense of humor and solemnity, I make artist's books about the events and stories related to our religion, work, animals, neighbors, land and superstitions .

I mournfully watch the slow disintegration of our way of life. Vital aspects of our lives, such as working on the farm as a family, speaking with an accent, and making much …

Ethnoarchaeological Consideration Of Social Relationship And Settlement Patterning Among Africans In The Caribbean Diaspora, E. Kofi Agorsah Jan 1999

Ethnoarchaeological Consideration Of Social Relationship And Settlement Patterning Among Africans In The Caribbean Diaspora, E. Kofi Agorsah

Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper discusses models of ethnoarchaeology. The crucial consideration should be an orientation towards an explicitly well-defined interface between models drawn from modern traditional behavior and those of the past. This is the main principle which forms the basis of the discussion of this paper. This approach was the obvious choice mainly because of the availability of the type of evidence in Africa and the African disapora that would permit observed continuities with the past. However, ethnoarchaeology should not be considered as an end in itself, but as one of the many tools which can be used to refine our …

Confocal Microscopy Of Plant Cells, Carol L. Wymer, Alison F. Beven, Kurt Boudonck, Clive W. Lloyd Jan 1999

Confocal Microscopy Of Plant Cells, Carol L. Wymer, Alison F. Beven, Kurt Boudonck, Clive W. Lloyd

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

The increasing availability of confocal microscopy has begun a revolution in plant biology in which microscopy has again become a powerful tool for understanding structure and function. Examples of applications include: three dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the interphase microtubule array in large vacuolated epidermal cells (1); measuring cytoplasmic free calcium changes in whole maize coleoptile segments in response to phototropic and gravitropic stimuli (2); and studying symplastic phloem connections in intact Arabidopsis roots (3). The major reason for this revolution is the ability to collect clear images in three dimensions due to the lack of image degradation caused by out-of-focus …

Under-Ice Diel Vertical Migrations Of Oncorhynchus Nerka And Their Zooplankton Prey, G. B. Steinhart, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

We used stationary hydroacoustics and measures of environmental conditions (water temperature, dissolved oxygen, light levels, and zooplankton) to determine what factors, foraging or predation risk, influenced diel vertical migrations of Oncorhynchus nerka during winter in three high-mountain lakes. The Sawtooth Valley lakes are deep, oligotrophic, glacial lakes located in central Idaho, U.S.A., and historically contained populations of anadromous O. nerka. In general, low light intensities limited foraging opportunities of O. nerka under ice, especially at night. In Stanley Lake, O. nerka underwent diel vertical migrations to exploit available light to feed. Oncorhynchus nerka occupied shallow water at night, where there …

Alley Cropping: An Agroforestry Practice, Sandra Hodge, H. E. Garrett, Jerry Bratton Jan 1999

Alley Cropping: An Agroforestry Practice, Sandra Hodge, H. E. Garrett, Jerry Bratton

Agroforestry Notes (USDA-NAC)

Alley cropping is an agroforestry practice intended to place trees within agricultural cropland systems. The purpose is to enhance or add income diversity (both long and short range), reduce wind and water erosion, improve crop production, improve utilization of nutrients, improve wildlife habitat or aesthetics, and/or convert cropland to forest. The practice is especially attractive to landowners wishing to add economic stability to their farming system while protecting soil from erosion, water from contamination, and improving wildlife habitat.

Saving The Lost Sheep: Bringing Environmental Values Back Into The Fold With A New Epa Decisionmaking Paradigm, Victor B. Flatt Jan 1999

Saving The Lost Sheep: Bringing Environmental Values Back Into The Fold With A New Epa Decisionmaking Paradigm, Victor B. Flatt

Washington Law Review

Currently, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) uses benefit-cost analysis in making many of its regulatory and enforcement decisions. This Article argues that, although required in some instances, the EPA's benefit-cost analysis procedure is incomplete, deeply flawed, and may even violate statutes in some respects. Much of the controversy surrounding environmental regulation can be attributed to this flawed benefit-cost analysis. This Article proposes a new paradigm for EPA regulatory decisionmaking. The proposed paradigm is a four-step decisionmaking process that enhances the outcome of the EPA's decisions by highlighting values that are often ignored or outside the traditional benefit-cost analysis but are …

Ordinary Children Extraordinary Legacies: Childhood During The American Civil War, Deborah S. Holder Jan 1999

Ordinary Children Extraordinary Legacies: Childhood During The American Civil War, Deborah S. Holder

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

War heroes do not have to wear uniforms, display meritorious medals for bravery and sacrifice, or voluntarily fight for their country in military regiments. The real heroes are all people touched by conflict. The strategy of war positions the powerful against the powerless, thereby creating an absurd imbalance within society. Hence, ordinary citizens become heroes not by decision but by circumstance; had they a choice, they most certainly would not choose to participate in war. Joseph Heller once said about his war novel: "Catch-22 says that people in power have a right to do to us anything we can't stop …
