Enhanced Degradation Of Algal Lipids By Benthic Macrofaunal Activity: Effect Of Yoldia Limatula, Ming-Yi Sun, Robert C. Aller, Cindy Lee, Stuart G. Wakeham Jan 1999

Enhanced Degradation Of Algal Lipids By Benthic Macrofaunal Activity: Effect Of Yoldia Limatula, Ming-Yi Sun, Robert C. Aller, Cindy Lee, Stuart G. Wakeham

Journal of Marine Research

We used the protobranch bivalve, Yoldia limatula, in a series of incubation experiments to test whether activities of deposit-feeding macrofauna cause differences in lipid degradation processes relative to controls lacking macrofauna. Uniformly 13C-labeled algae (13C > 98%) were used as a source of fresh planktonic lipids, easily distinguished from bulk sedimentary lipids by GC/MS. Variations in concentration of major lipid components ([16:1(ω7), 16:0 and 18:1(ω9)] fatty acids and phytol) were followed as a function of time in incubations with and without Yoldia. Results showed that Yoldia can significantly enhance the degradation of planktonic lipids in sediments. …

Enzymatically Hydrolyzable Amino Acids In North Sea Sediments And Their Possible Implication For Sediment Nutritional Values, B. Dauwe, J. J. Middelburg, P. Van Rijswijk, J. Sinke, P. M. J. Herman, C. H. R. Heip Jan 1999

Enzymatically Hydrolyzable Amino Acids In North Sea Sediments And Their Possible Implication For Sediment Nutritional Values, B. Dauwe, J. J. Middelburg, P. Van Rijswijk, J. Sinke, P. M. J. Herman, C. H. R. Heip

Journal of Marine Research

The nutritional value of peptidic material in five North Sea sediments that differ in organic matter quality has been investigated with an enzymatic approach measuring the digestibility (rate constant k of proteolysis by protease) and the proportion of bioavailable fraction of amino acids (%EHAA-i:THAA). The bioavailable fraction in sediments varied between 14-50% EHAA-i:THAA and was generally lower than in potential source organisms such as algae (40-43%), plankton (~80%) and bacteria (57-72%). The rate of proteolysis of the amino acids varied among stations (k = 0.3-3.1 h-1) with a systematic decrease when going from labile to more refractory …

The Role Of Patent Law In Poland's Transitioning Science And Technology Policy, And A Comparison With The Patent Laws Of The United States, 17 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 381 (1999), Edward H. Sikorski

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

Poland is at a critical point in determining whether it will provide the type of intellectual property protection afforded in other countries. Based on its current programs, Poland clearly recognizes that it must improve its infrastructure. It is imperative for Poland to institute and develop new science and technology policies. As a result, Poland must pay attention to issues like privatization and intellectual property because newly privatized companies will lean on patents and other rights as footholds against their competitors. Poland must also address issues concerning physical access and communications and electronic access to the country. Poland's overall science and …

Cd-Rom Briefs: Must Today's High Tech Lawyers Wait Until The Playing Field Is Level?, 17 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 615 (1999), Joanne M. Snow

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

The CD-ROM has infiltrated every part of the legal profession, from research and learning aids to information storage. The newest technological advancement to enter the profession is the CD-ROM brief. In 1997, the first three CD-ROM briefs were filed with the federal judiciary, and the courts seem more than eager to continue their use. As with all new things, there are critics. Those opposed to CD-ROM briefs believe that they will adversely affect the standard of review, efficiency and finality of decisions in the trial and appellate courts and prejudice the less affluent. These concerns, however, are unfounded. The appellate …

Book Versus Byte: The Prospects And Desirability Of A Paperless Society, 17 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 797 (1999), Charles N. Faerber

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

There is an ominous traffic sign on the electronic superhighway to that much- ballyhooed paperless society. It reads: "Road Under Construction--Completion Date Unknown." To be sure, the vaunted superhighway does extend, perfectly paved, for a good distance, as anyone who has ever made a paperless purchase on the Internet will attest, but the highway engineers have so far been stymied from reaching their digital Valhalla by practical hurdles. And there is another hitch: many travelers do not want to get on the superhighway no matter how far it extends. They prefer unpaved horse-and-buggy thoroughfares that are slower but seem to …

Technology Arms Peeping Toms With A New And Dangerous Arsenal: A Compelling Need For States To Adopt New Legislation, 17 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 1167 (1999), Maria Pope

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

With the rapid growth of technology, voyeurs are now armed with mechanical devices that aid them in their attempt to invade one's privacy. In addition, the images are now recorded and available for others to view. The introduction of the Internet as a medium to distribute material obtained from voyeurs increases the harm of video voyeurism to an international level. Despite the rapid growth of video voyeurism, numerous states have adequate statutes that make this act a crime. In addition, many state statutes fail to include provisions directed at new advancements in technology and the distributors of voyeur recorded material. …

G99-1391 Diseases Of Home Garden Tomatoes, John E. Watkins Jan 1999

G99-1391 Diseases Of Home Garden Tomatoes, John E. Watkins

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Tomato diseases occur every year in every garden to some extent. This NebGuide discusses the symptoms and management of the most common and damaging ones in Nebraska.

Gardening is a favorite summer activity of backyard farmers and nothing tastes better than a ripe, home grown tomato. The popularity of local farmer's markets has increased tremendously in the 90s. Tomatoes are a mainstay of the backyard garden and the Saturday morning farmer's market. Being a successful gardener requires knowledge, skill and persistence. Every summer, nature pits the skills of the gardener against weather, insects and diseases. These challenges test our ability …

Effects Of Fire Retardant Chemical And Fire Suppressant Foam On Shrub Steppe Vegetation In Northern Nevada, Diane L. Larson, Wesley E. Newton, Patrick J. Anderson, Steven J. Stein

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of fire retardant chemical (Phos-Chek G75-F*) and fire suppressant foam (Silv-Ex) application, alone and in combination with fire, on Great Basin shrub steppe vegetation. We measured growth, resprouting, flowering, and incidence of galling insects on Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus and Artemisia tridentata. These characteristics were not affected by any chemical treatment. We measured community characteristics, including species richness, evenness, and diversity, and number of stems of woody and herbaceous plants in riparian and upland plots. Of these characteristics, only species richness and number of stems/m2 clearly responded to the chemical …

Alpha Status, Dominance, And Division Of Labor In Wolf Packs, L. David Mech Jan 1999

Alpha Status, Dominance, And Division Of Labor In Wolf Packs, L. David Mech

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

The prevailing view of a wolf (Canis lupus) pack is that of a group of individuals ever vying for dominance but held in check by the “alpha” pair, the alpha male and alpha female. Most research on the social dynamics of wolf packs, however, has been conducted on non-natural assortments of captive wolves. Here I describe the wolf-pack social order as it occurs in nature, discuss the alpha concept and social dominance and submission, and present data on the precise relationships among members in free-living packs, based on a literature review and 13 summers of observations of wolves …

Karyological Analysis And Body Proportion Of Catfish (Clariidae, Clarias Lazera, Valenciennes, 1840) In The Göksu Delta, Turkey, Serap Ergene Gözükara, Ender Portakal, Arzu Karahan

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Chromosome analysis of Clarias lazera living in wet lands located in Göksu River (Göksu Delta) was accomplished by modified air-drying. Clarias lazera was found to have 18 metacentric, 26 submetacentric and 12 acrocentric chromosomes. Twenty-five systematically important meristic and morphometric characters of Clarias lazera in the Göksu Delta were examined for 49 specimens. In order to clarify the taxonomic status of Clarias lazera, which is not originally from this region, karyological analyses were carried out, and certain some morhometric characteristics were investigated.

Turkish Journal of Zoology

In this survey the amphibian fauna of Reşadiye (Datça) Peninsula, which has not been studied in detail so far, is given. No urodelan species has been encountered during the present work; but the presence of four different species belonging to three anuran families is established. Bufo bufo, Bufo viridis, Hyla arborea and Rana ridibunda specimens were collected from two, five, three and six different localities respectively, establishing the status of the peninsula's anura fauna. A total of 125 adult and two juvenile specimens were studied morphologically. Some observations on the ecological and biological characteristics of the anurans are also given.

Specimens Of Ophisops Elegans (Sauria:Lacertidae) Collected From Ihlara Valley (Aksaray), Kurtuluş Olgun, Cemal Varol Tok

Turkish Journal of Zoology

In this study, a total of 30 specimens (15 , 15 ) collected from Ihlara Valley were examined for their taxonomic characteristics. The Ihlara population was compared with two nearby populations (Kayseri and Karaman), which are included in the distribution range of Ophisops elegans centralanatoliae. When pholidosis, coloration and pattern features were taken into consideration it was concluded that the Ihlara population can be included in the species Ophisops elegans centralanatoliae.

The Stability Of Stochastic Systems: The Case Of Persistence And Resilience, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal, Hamid Beladi Jan 1999

The Stability Of Stochastic Systems: The Case Of Persistence And Resilience, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal, Hamid Beladi

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Beginning with the seminal work of K. J. Arrow and L. Hurwicz, there now exists a vast literature in economics on the stability of economic systems. This notwithstanding, to the best of our knowledge, the economics literature does not contain any studies of the stability of jointly determined, stochastic ecological-economic systems. Consequently, the objective of this paper is to identify and mathematically characterize two stability concepts for such systems.

Market Integration And The Law Of One Price: An Empirical Comparison Of Alternative Estimation Approaches, Gertrude S. Muwanga, Donald L. Snyder Jan 1999

Market Integration And The Law Of One Price: An Empirical Comparison Of Alternative Estimation Approaches, Gertrude S. Muwanga, Donald L. Snyder

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

The concepts of market integration and the law of one price are defined and select cattle markets are examined relative to these definitions using correlation, cointegration, and causality approaches. Cattle-Fax data on five cattle classes, distinguished by sex and weight, were examined over 12 market areas encompassing 19 states. All markets were found to be integrated to some extent, though only a portion perfectly integrated. The law of one price held most often in the lightweight (400-pound) heifers and least often in the heavy (800-pound) steers. The most dominant markets appear to be in the Southwest, with the least dominant …
