Population Dynamics Of A Naturally Occurring Heterogeneous Mixture Of Borrelia Burgdorferi Clones, Erick K. Hofmeister, Gregory E. Glass, James E. Childs, David H. Persing
Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications
Two unique isolates of Borrelia burgdorferi, differing in plasmid content and outer surface protein C expression, were cultured on sequential captures of a single free-living Peromyscus leucopus mouse and were examined for differences in transmissibility. Both isolates were transmissible from inoculated C.B-17 mice to larval Ixodes scapularis ticks and, subsequently, from infected nymphal ticks to C3H/HeJ mice. Plasmid and protein analyses suggested that the original isolates were a mixed population of B. burgdorferi, and cloning by limiting dilution resulted in the identification of two clonal groups. In addition to being heterogeneous in plasmid and genomic macrorestriction analyses, the …

Arupensis, From A Cattle Rancher: Identity With Isolates Found In Conjunction With Borrelia Burgdorferi And Babesia Microti Among Naturally Infected Mice, David F. Welch, Karen C. Carroll, Erick K. Hofmeister, David H. Persing, Denise A. Robison, Arnold G. Steigerwalt, Don J. Brenner
Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications
Bacteremia with fever due to a novel subspecies of Bartonella vinsonii was found in a cattle rancher. The subspecies shared major characteristics of the genus Bartonella in terms of most biochemical features and cellular fatty acid profile, but it was distinguishable from other subspecies of B. vinsonii by good growth on heart infusion agar supplemented with X factor and by its pattern of enzymatic hydrolysis of peptide substrates. DNA relatedness studies verified that the isolate belonged to the genus Bartonella and that it was genotypically related to B. vinsonii. The highest level of relatedness was observed with recently characterized …

Oral Transmission And Early Lymphoid Tropism Of Chronic Wasting Disease PrpRes In Mule Deer Fawns (Odocoileus Hemionus), Christina J. Sigurdson, Elizabeth S. Williams, Michael W. Miller, Terry R. Spraker, Katherine I. O'Rourke, Edward A. Hoover
Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications
Mule deer fawns (Odocoileus hemionus) were inoculated orally with a brain homogenate prepared from mule deer with naturally occurring chronic wasting disease (CWD), a prion-induced transmissible spongiform encephalopathy. Fawns were necropsied and examined for PrPres, the abnormal prion protein isoform, at 10, 42, 53, 77, 78 and 80 days post-inoculation (p.i.) using an immunohistochemistry assay modified to enhance sensitivity. PrPres was detected in alimentarytract- associated lymphoid tissues (one or more of the following: retropharyngeal lymph node, tonsil, Peyer’s patch and ileocaecal lymph node) as early as 42 days p.i. and in all fawns examined thereafter …

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications
The PrP gene encodes the putative causative agent of the transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs), a heterogeneous group of fatal, neurodegenerative disorders including human Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease, bovine spongiform encephalopathy, ovine scrapie and chronic wasting disease (CWD) of North American deer and elk. Polymorphisms in the PrP gene are associated with variations in relative susceptibility, pathological lesion patterns, incubation times and clinical course of TSEs of humans, mice and sheep. Sequence analysis of the PrP gene from Rocky Mountain elk showed only one amino acid change (Met to Leu at cervid codon 132). Homozygosity for Met at the corresponding polymorphic site (Met …

Balanacing The Ethical Conundrums Of Internet Research: An Existentialist View From The Trenches, Jim Thomas
Balanacing The Ethical Conundrums Of Internet Research: An Existentialist View From The Trenches, Jim Thomas
Iowa Journal of Communication
The fundamental ethical questions posed by new technology are not new. Basic beliefs in the precept that it is better to do good than ill do not change. What changes is that relationship between behaviors and the ethical conceptions by which we judge them shift and become ambiguous, vague, and perceived through a sometimes foggy prism. The problem for those involved in Net activity, then is not one of defining new ethical principles or revising or identifying new categorical imperatives. Our task instead is one of understanding the social bases of the relationship between technology and conflicts over the meaning …

Conservation Genetics Of The Cretan Wild Goat (Capra Aegagrus Cretensis), Erica G. Heumberger
Conservation Genetics Of The Cretan Wild Goat (Capra Aegagrus Cretensis), Erica G. Heumberger
Open Access Master's Theses
The Cretan wild goat (Capra aegagrus cretensis Lydekker) or agrimi is the last existing sub-species of free ranging bezoar goat (C. a. aegagrus) in Europe. Today, the agrimi's existence is threatened by hybridization with domestic goats. Today, the agrimi's existence is threatened by hybridization with domestic goats. Protection of this animal is very important to the people of Greece and Crete due to the agrimi' s historic cultural importance. To examine genetic variation within and among wild and domestic goats (C. hircus), 6 polymorphic microsatellite loci were used to compare the genetic structure of 5 …

The Palms (Arecaceae) Of Sonora, Mexico, Richard S. Felger, Elaine Joyal
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
This publication is an account of the palms (Arecaceae) in the state of Sonora in northwestern Mexico. Six native palm species in three genera are recorded for Sonora: Brahea with four species, and Sabal and Washingtonia each with one species. Relationships and taxonomy within Brahea, especially B. elegans, remain unresolved. Brief botanical descriptions, taxonomic synopses, local names, identification keys, conservation status and recommendations, and distributional and ethno- botanical information are provided for each species. Basionyms and types are cited. Distributions are documented with citations of nearly all herbarium specimens known to us from Sonora. Many palm populations in …

Illuminating The Sermon At The Temple And Sermon On The Mount, John W. Welch
Illuminating The Sermon At The Temple And Sermon On The Mount, John W. Welch
Maxwell Institute Publications
Understanding the Sermon on the Mount (meaning both texts in their shared, collective meaning) as a temple text reveals that it has far more power and unity than a mere collection of miscellaneous sayings of Jesus. John W. Welch examines the teachings and commandments of the Sermon on the Mount in its Book of Mormon setting—at the Nephite temple, in connection with sacred ordinances of covenant making. This context opens new insights into the meaning and significance of the Sermon whereby readers never again see the Sermon the same.
Illuminating the Sermon at the Temple & Sermon on the Mount …
Finding Biblical Hebrew And Other Ancient Literary Forms In The Book Of Mormon, Hugh W. Pinnock
Finding Biblical Hebrew And Other Ancient Literary Forms In The Book Of Mormon, Hugh W. Pinnock
Maxwell Institute Publications
One important and fruitful area of Book of Mormon studies has focused on ancient Hebrew literary forms present in the text. After years of studying these fascinating forms, Hugh W. Pinnock offers his perspective on their beauty, function, and background. By design this book offers a basic working knowledge of only some of the ancient literary forms identified in the Book of Mormon. Together they represent a significant percentage of the types of ancient forms drawn upon by the Nephite prophets.
The author explains that knowledge of ancient Hebrew writing forms and Jewish poetry is incomplete even today, and much …

And Cloning Makes Three: A Constitutional Comparison Between Cloning And Other Assisted Reproductive Technologies, Stephanie J. Hong
And Cloning Makes Three: A Constitutional Comparison Between Cloning And Other Assisted Reproductive Technologies, Stephanie J. Hong
UC Law Constitutional Quarterly
In recent years, society and medical technology have combined to yield numerous technologies with which a child may be born beyond traditional reproductive means. These procreative methods necessarily implicate various rights under the Constitution. The recent cloning of "Doily" the sheep and its potential implications for the cloning of human beings has thrust these issues into the forefront of society's collective mind. Despite constitutional concerns, these reproductive technologies remain legally permissible. The introduction of cloning, however, has been met with resistance far greater than that of the previous techniques.
This Note compares the similarities and differences, constitutionally speaking, between cloning …
