A Case For Site Acclimation In The Reintroduction Of The Endangered Razorback Sucker (Xyrauchen Texanus), United States Geological Survey Jan 1999

A Case For Site Acclimation In The Reintroduction Of The Endangered Razorback Sucker (Xyrauchen Texanus), United States Geological Survey

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

Two site-acclimation studies (Mueller and Marsh 1998, Foster and Mueller 1999) were conducted in 1997 and 1998. The primary emphasis was habitat use and dispersal but we also examined if the rapid dispersal, typically associated with hatchery-produced razorback suckers (suckers), could be mitigated by allowing fish a period of time to recover from stocking-induced stress. Findings of those studies and existing physiological literature suggest that current stocking protocols may subject stocked fish to unnecessary behavioral or physiological stress that could impact performance and ultimately survival. This report presents those findings and recommends an evaluation of existing stocking procedures for the …

Water Resources Management Plan Arches National Park And Canyonlands National Park, United States Department Of The Interior National Park Service

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

This Water Resources Management Plan describes the water resources of Arches and Canyonlands National Parks and the issues affecting them. This plan provides detailed descriptions of the hydrologic environment in both parks, discussion of management issues developed in two scoping sessions, and management directives in the form of project statements. Typically, a Water Resources Management Plan is preceded by a scoping meeting held at the park. In this case, the Southeast Utah Group of parks (Southeast Utah Group), which includes Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, and Natural Bridges National Monument, held two scoping meetings. The first scoping session, held …

The Effect Of Mechanical Noise And Natural Sound On Visitor Experiences In Units Of The National Park System, Dr. James Gramann, National Park Service, U.S. Department Of The Interior Jan 1999

The Effect Of Mechanical Noise And Natural Sound On Visitor Experiences In Units Of The National Park System, Dr. James Gramann, National Park Service, U.S. Department Of The Interior

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

This paper reviews research on the effects of mechanical noise and natural sound on visitor experiences in national parks. Three approaches to studying noise impacts are described. Most noise research to date has addressed the impact of air-tour overflights on visitor experiences. these impacts are localized with significant percentages of visitors in some parks reporting interference with natural sounds from aircraft noise. Research also shows that unthreatening natural environments can have significant stress-reducing effects for many people. However, it is unclear if these effects are due to hearing the sounds of nature or to a combination of hearing and seeing …

Water Resources Management Plan: Arches National Park & Canyonlands National Park, Utah, Lynn Cudlip, Kevin Berghoff, David Vana-Miller

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

The National Park Service recognizes the importance of preserving, conserving, and protecting water resources within its boundaries. Water resources, whether as large as the Colorado River or as small as a seep in Ernie's Country of Canyonlands National Park, play a distinctive role in linking ecosystems and , in general, provide habitat for a number of organisms. To protect park water resources, the Natinoal Park Service initiated a Water REsources Planning Program in 1991. The planning program provides an essential step in developing a comprehensive understanding of a park's hydrological system and the complex resource issues which surround it. The …

A New Town In The Valley: The Centennial History Of Newton, Utah 1869-1969, Larry D. Christiansen Jan 1999

A New Town In The Valley: The Centennial History Of Newton, Utah 1869-1969, Larry D. Christiansen

History Student Research

In 1969 Newton celebrates its centennial and in commemoration of its first hundred years this history is intended. This work salutes the citizens of this small Mormon town, past and present, for their accomplishments.

The author has tried, to the best of his ability, to use contemporary accounts as the foundation for this history, and using secondary works to supplement the information found in primary works or to fill gaps when no other information was available. The author is aware of contradictions between this work and the diverse accounts written by other townspeople. Some of the contradictions are covered in …

Adult Survival And Imperfect Assessment Of Parentage: Effects On Male Parenting Decisions, R. A. Mauck, Elizabeth A. Marschall, Patricia G. Parker Jan 1999

Adult Survival And Imperfect Assessment Of Parentage: Effects On Male Parenting Decisions, R. A. Mauck, Elizabeth A. Marschall, Patricia G. Parker

Biology Department Faculty Works

Applications of molecular methods to assess parentage have revealed that the distribution of reproductive success among individuals often differs, sometimes dramatically, from expectation based on observation of behavioral association. Much theory exists on whether and when males should reduce parental care in response to level of paternity. Life-history theory predicts that trade-offs in reproductive effort should be influenced by adult survival. We used a dynamic programming approach to address how level of paternity, ability to assess paternity, and adult survival rate interact to affect male tolerance of reduced parentage in a given brood. Adult survival has the greatest influence on …

Giant Panda Ailuropoda Melanoleuca Jan 1999

Giant Panda Ailuropoda Melanoleuca

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

What animal is black and white and loved all over the world? If you guessed the giant panda, you’re right! The giant panda is also known as the panda bear or bamboo bear, or in Chinese as Daxiongmao, the “large bear cat.” In fact, its scientific name means “black and white cat-footed animal.”

Giant pandas are found only in the mountains of central China—in small isolated areas of the north and central portions of the Sichuan Province, in the mountains bordering the southernmost part of Gansu Province and in the Qinling Mountains of the Shaanxi Province.

Giant pandas live …

Common Parasites, Diseases And Injuries Of Freshwater Fishes In The Northwest Territories And Nunavut, D. B. Stewart, L. M. J. Bernier

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

This booklet gives basic information on common parasites, diseases and injuries of fish harvested from fresh water in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut (Canada). It answers some of the more common questions asked by Aboriginal, domestic, sport and commercial harvesters, and by fisheries researchers. It is not an in depth treatment of fish health. Parasites that are uncommon or too small to be seen with the naked eye and diseases that are poorly known are not discussed. Relatively little research has been conducted on fish parasites in the region, less still on fish diseases and injuries.

The Human Ehrlichioses In The United States, Jennifer H. Mcquiston, Christopher D. Paddock, Robert C. Holman, James E. Childs Jan 1999

The Human Ehrlichioses In The United States, Jennifer H. Mcquiston, Christopher D. Paddock, Robert C. Holman, James E. Childs

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

The emerging tick-borne zoonoses human monocytic ehrlichiosis (HME) and human granulocytic ehrlichiosis (HGE) are underreported in the United States. From 1986 through 1997, 1,223 cases (742 HME, 449 HGE, and 32 not ascribed to a specific ehrlichial agent) were reported by state health departments. HME was most commonly reported from southeastern and southcentral states, while HGE was most often reported from northeastern and upper midwestern states. The annual number of reported cases increased sharply, from 69 in 1994 to 364 in 1997, coincident with an increase in the number of states making these conditions notifiable. From 1986 through 1997, 827 …

Long-Term Studies Of Hantavirus Reservoir Populations In The Southwestern United States: A Synthesis, James N. Mills, Thomas G. Ksiazek, C.J. Peters, James E. Childs Jan 1999

Long-Term Studies Of Hantavirus Reservoir Populations In The Southwestern United States: A Synthesis, James N. Mills, Thomas G. Ksiazek, C.J. Peters, James E. Childs

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

A series of intensive, longitudinal, mark-recapture studies of hantavirus infection dynamics in reservoir populations in the southwestern United States indicates consistent patterns as well as important differences among sites and host-virus associations. All studies found a higher prevalence of infection in older (particularly male) mice; one study associated wounds with seropositivity. These findings are consistent with horizontal transmission and transmission through fighting between adult male rodents. Despite very low rodent densities at some sites, low-level hantavirus infection continued, perhaps because of persistent infection in a few long-lived rodents or periodic reintroduction of virus from neighboring populations. Prevalence of hantavirus antibody …

Dusky-Footed Wood Rats (Neotoma Fuscipes) As Reservoirs Of Granulocytic Ehrlichiae (Rickettsiales: Ehrlichieae) In Northern California, William L. Nicholson, Martin B. Castro, Vicki L. Kramer, John W. Sumner, James E. Childs

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

Dusky-footed wood rats (Neotoma fuscipes) and Peromyscus sp. mice (P. maniculatus and P. truei) were collected from one site in Placer County, one site in Santa Cruz County, and two sites in Sonoma County in northern California. Serum or plasma samples from 260 rodents were tested for antibodies to the agent of human granulocytic ehrlichiosis. Of these, samples from 25 wood rats (34% of those tested) and 10 (8%) Peromyscus sp. mice were found to be seropositive, but only those from one site. PCR assays targeting the groESL heat shock operon were conducted on all seropositive …

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

A 3-month ecologic investigation was done to identify the reservoir of Ebola virus following the 1995 outbreak in Kikwit, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Efforts focused on the fields where the putative primary case had worked but included other habitats near Kikwit. Samples were collected from 3066 vertebrates and tested for the presence of antibodies to Ebola (subtype Zaire) virus: All tests were negative, and attempts to isolate Ebola virus were unsuccessful. The investigation was hampered by a lack of information beyond the daily activities of the primary case, a lack of information on Ebola virus ecology, which precluded the …
