Coston, Howard E. Taylor, R. Blaine Mccleskey, James W. Ball, Scott Ogle, Jeffrey S. Cotsifas, James A. Davis

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Acid mine waters from the Iron Mountain Superfund Site, Shasta County, California, flow through Spring Creek Reservoir and into Keswick Reservoir on the Sacramento River. In Keswick Reservoir, the acid mine waters have neutralized on mixing with neutral-pH lake water, producing fine-grained, metalrich sediments. Sediment cores were collected during 1997 from both reservoirs for characterization and pore waters were extracted under anoxic conditions. Chemical composition, mineralogical identification, redox chemistry, sorption properties, and toxicity were determined on several samples. Metal concentrations in sediment ranged from 4 to 47 % for Fe, 200 to 4,800 mg/kg (milligrams per kilogram) for Cu, and …

Literacy Practices At The Genoa Industrial Indian School, Amy M. Goodburn Jan 1999

Literacy Practices At The Genoa Industrial Indian School, Amy M. Goodburn

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Despite an abundance of scholarship on federal Indian boarding schools, few studies have focused on literacy as a central term for investigation. Although literacy studies is necessarily interdisciplinary and contributes to insights about the relationship between language and, in Levinson and Holland's words, the "cultural production of the educated person," few Indian boarding-school histories have focused on the significance of particular literacy practices for understanding Indian students' school experiences. When literacy is discussed, it is usually in terms of the federal "English only" requirement that prohibited Indian languages or the drill and rote exercises used in the primary language curriculum. …

Bound To Serve: Indentured Servitude In Colonial Virginia, 1624-177 6, Penny Howard Jan 1999

Bound To Serve: Indentured Servitude In Colonial Virginia, 1624-177 6, Penny Howard

The Corinthian

Was indentured servitude the cornerstone of slavery? If such a premise is to be accepted, then the indentured may be termed "white slaves." Yet not all historians are so quick to place the label of slave on servants who worked for a set term. Other historians argue that servitude was a form of apprenticeship and servants were treated no worse than their European counterparts. Indeed, historians rightly contend that precedent in English common law set the precedent for Virginia statutes regarding servitude.

Management And Leadership: Two Important Concepts That Together Make And Excellent Administrator, Stacey J. Ward Jan 1999

Management And Leadership: Two Important Concepts That Together Make And Excellent Administrator, Stacey J. Ward

Graduate Research Papers

Throughout my high school years, I wanted to be a wealthy business woman. I dabbled in the stock market, read the Wall Street Journal, imagined owning a business one day, and even worked as in intern for a brokerage company. It was evident that I would study business, and become involved in business after college. There was just one problem. My past would reveal my true feelings of success.

Behavioral Interactions And Conflict Among Domestic Dogs, Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs, And People In Boulder, Colorado, Marc Bekoff, Robert W. Ickes

Ethology Collection

Interactions among domestic dogs (Canis familiaris), black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus), and people were studied at Dry Creek, Boulder, Colorado. Our objective was to develop a basic understanding of the nature of dog–prairie dog interactions in this recreational area, because this is an issue that has high visibility and over which there is conflict in Boulder: There are those who want dogs to run free regardless of their impact on the behavior and lives of prairie dogs and those who want to protect prairie dogs and have dogs restrained or go elsewhere. We found that dogs clearly influenced the behavior …

Research Fundamentals: V. The Use Of Laboratory Animal Models In Research, Brian J. O'Neil, Jeffrey A. Kline, Keith Burkhart, John Younger

Biomedicine and Animal Models in Research Collection

Animal research has provided important information about many aspects of the pathophysiology of human disease. Well-performed animal studies can determine the potential benefit of many proposed therapeutic interventions, and experimental results from animal studies have served as the basis for many landmark clinical trials. Many animal research models are described in the research literature, and choosing the appropriate model to answer a research question can be a daunting task. Even more challenging is developing a new model when none of the existing systems are relevant to the proposed question. This article was prepared by members of the SAEM Research Committee …

The Milling Stone Horizon Revisited: New Perspectives From Northern And Central California, Richard T. Fitzgerald, Terry L. Jones Jan 1999

The Milling Stone Horizon Revisited: New Perspectives From Northern And Central California, Richard T. Fitzgerald, Terry L. Jones

Social Sciences

For nearly half a century, the Milling Stone Horizon has been recognized as an integral element of California culture history, but representative components have long been thought to be restricted to the southern portion of the state. Claims to the contrary by D.L. True and a few of his students for the presence of Milling Stone Horizon manifestations further north have not been fully embraced due to inadequate dating and poor component resolution. In this article, we reassess the previously scanty evidence for a Milling Stone Horizon presence in northern California, and review data from nine recently investigated sites that …

Problems Of Irrigation In Developing Countries, Phillip Z. Kirpich, Dorota Z. Haman, Stuart W. Styles

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

This paper describes the crucial importance of irrigated agriculture to developing countries and to the world as a whole. This is followed by a summary of key problems that restrict and diminish the benefits of irrigated agriculture. Solution of these problems will above all require a holistic approach and will require changes in the institutions involved. These institutions include those of the developing countries, of the developed countries that provide aid, and of the international financing and technical-assistance agencies. Engineers in the developed countries have had, and will continue to have, a leading role but will need some redirection. ASCE …

Evaluation Of The Effect Of High Oil Corn Diets On Lamb Performance, A. L. Slyter, Rud Wasson Jan 1999

Evaluation Of The Effect Of High Oil Corn Diets On Lamb Performance, A. L. Slyter, Rud Wasson

South Dakota Sheep Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1999

The availability of corn varieties with higher oil content may offer an advantage as feed stuffs for various species and classes of livestock. Higher oil content increases the energy density in the feed stuff, potentially leading to improved performance and/or efficiency of gain. Additional benefits suggested are dust reduction, reduced energy for processing and improved palatability. Most research to date has been with swine and poultry diets. The object of these trials was to evaluate the effect of high oil corn com pared to normal corn in pre-weaning and post-weaning diets for lambs.

Connecting The Learning: 4-H Extension And Graduation Standards, Tamie Bremseth, Jan Hively, Jim Mitchell

Project Summaries

The 1998 Minnesota Graduation Rule defines what students should master during their school years. Going beyond paper-and-pencil tests, the rule requires students to demonstrate what they can do as well as what they know. As the rule has been developed, teachers and school districts have been scrambling to adjust their programs to address the individualized learning requirements that emphasize experiential, project-based learning.
