Housing And Population Health: A Review Of The Literature, Stephen Hwang, Esme Fuller-Thomson, J. David Hurlchanski, Toba Bryant, Youssef Habib, Wendy C. Regoeczi
Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications
Research into the relationship between housing and health has frequently been narrowly focused, fragmented, and of marginal practical relevance to either housing or health studies. Population health research, in its reference to the importance of the social and physical environment, rarely mentions housing. While it has been recognized for some time that there is a need for the development of a co-ordinated, integrated and cumulative body of housing and health research, there is still very little formal co-ordination between housing policy and population health policy. More attention needs to be paid to measuring the nature and extent to which better …

Evolution Of Thermotolerance And Variation In The Heat Shock Protein, Hsp70, Robert A. Krebs, Brian R. Bettencourt
Evolution Of Thermotolerance And Variation In The Heat Shock Protein, Hsp70, Robert A. Krebs, Brian R. Bettencourt
Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications
Low to moderate levels of stress induce a class of molecular chaperones called heat shock proteins (Hsps), which protect cells, tissues and whole organisms from more severe stress. In higher Eukaryotes, Hsp70 is one of the principle heat-induced chaperones. This response is general, and how much Hsp70 an animal produces correlates with the level of stress to which it is exposed. Nonetheless, definitively linking high Hsp70 expression as an adaptation to stress tolerance is problematic, because organisms and cells respond to stress in many ways. By molecular manipulation of Hsp70 in one animal group, Drosophila, differences in hsp70 copy number …
Marching To Madness: Dual Use Trademarks After Illinois High School Association V. Gte Vantage, Jonathan Berger
Marching To Madness: Dual Use Trademarks After Illinois High School Association V. Gte Vantage, Jonathan Berger
UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal
March is the month when the college basketball season draws to a close, and the insanity associated with the championship tournaments begins. In 1996, the Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit ruled that the term "March Madness" existed with dual-usage. This article argues that there was no need to create the concept of the "dual-use trademark" at all, and that the existing trademark-law framework was perfectly adequate for the task of adjudicating issues such as the one presented here. This article further contends that the potential perils of dualuse trademarks far outweigh any benefits that might spring from their …

Rapid Generation Of Broad T-Cell Immunity In Humans After A Single Injection Of Mature Dendritic Cells, Madhav V. Dhodapkar, Ralph M. Steinman, Mark Sapp
Rapid Generation Of Broad T-Cell Immunity In Humans After A Single Injection Of Mature Dendritic Cells, Madhav V. Dhodapkar, Ralph M. Steinman, Mark Sapp
Publications
Dendritic cells (DCs) are potent antigen-presenting cells that initiate protective T-cell immunity in mice. To study the immunogenicity of DCs in humans, we injected 9 healthy subjects subcutaneously with a control injection of autologous monocyte-derived, mature DCs, followed 4-6 weeks later by DCs pulsed with keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH), HLA-A*0201- positive restricted influenza matrix peptide (MP), and tetanus toxoid (TT). Four more subjects received these antigens without DCs. Injection of unpulsed DCs, or antigens alone, failed to immunize. Priming of CD4+ T cells to KLH was observed in all 9 subjects injected with KLH-pulsed DCs, and boosting of TT-specific …

Vaccination With Mage-3a1 Peptide-Pulsed Nature, Monocyte-Derived Dendritic Cells Expands Specific Cytotoxic T Cells And Induces Regression Of Some Metastases In Advanced Stage Iv Melanoma, Beatrice Thurner, Ina Haendle, Claudia Röder
Publications
Dendritic cells (DCs) are considered to be promising adjuvants for inducing immunity to cancer. We used mature, monocyte-derived DCs to elicit resistance to malignant melanoma. The DCs were pulsed with Mage-3A1 tumor peptide and a recall antigens, tetanus toxoid or tuberculin. 11 far advanced stage IV melanoma patients, who were progressive despite standard chemotherapy, received five DC vaccinations at 14-d intervals. The first three vaccinations were administered into the skin, 3 x 106 DCs each subcutaneously and intradermally, followed by two intravenous injections of 6 x 106 and 12 x 106 DCs, respectively. Only minor (less than …
Differentiation Of Phagocytic Monocytes Into Lymph Node Dendritic Cells In Vivo, Gwendalyn J. Randolph, Kayo Inaba, Davide E. Robbiani
Differentiation Of Phagocytic Monocytes Into Lymph Node Dendritic Cells In Vivo, Gwendalyn J. Randolph, Kayo Inaba, Davide E. Robbiani
Publications
We investigated the differentiation and trafficking of inflammatory monocytes that phagocytosed subcutaneously injected fluorescent microspheres. As expected, most of the monocytes became microsphere+ macrophages, which remained in subcutaneous tissue. However, about 25% of latex+ cells migrated to the T cell area of draining lymph nodes, where they expressed dendritic cell (DC)-restricted markers and high levels of costimulatory molecules. Microsphere-transporting cells were distinct from resident skin DCs, and this transport was reduced by more than 85% in monocyte-deficient osteopetrotic mice. Thus, a substantial minority of inflammatory monocytes carry phagocytosed particles to lymph nodes and differentiate into DCs

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This study observed a population of Ambystoma opacum in Kanawha State Forest, Kanawha County, five miles south of Charleston, West Virginia. Data were collected from September 1995 to November 1997. Reproductive biology and salamander development were examined. Predation of A. opacum and potential predators were also noted. Like other species in the genus Ambystoma, adult A. opacum are mostly fossorial and rarely seen above ground outside of the breeding season. During the breeding season, adults make their way to the breeding pools. Males ventured to the breeding pool first in early September and ranged in size from 49 to 75mm …
The Relationship Between Ohio River Bass Tournament Success Rates, Forage Fish Abundance And Environmental Conditions, Jeffrey V. Ginger
The Relationship Between Ohio River Bass Tournament Success Rates, Forage Fish Abundance And Environmental Conditions, Jeffrey V. Ginger
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Due to increasing pressure from Ohio River bass anglers with regard to decreasing catch rates in 1981,1990, and 1997, the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR) initiated a study of black bass populations. The Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO), in conjunction with state and Federal agencies, has collected population data on Ohio River fishes at lock chambers and has measured various water quality parameters since 1957. That data coupled with Ohio River bass tournament data collected by the DNR since 1975 and other fishery data sets provided a historic look into the variability of angler success. These …

Ecology And Population Demography Of The Hellbender, Cryptobranchus Alleganiensis, In West Virginia, W. Jeffrey Humphries
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Using mark-recapture, I studied the population demography and habitat use of the hellbender, Cryptobranchus alleganiensis, in the West Fork of the Greenbrier River, Pocahontas County, West Virginia. Eighteen nocturnal surveys were conducted between April and October, 1998, during which 29 hellbenders were implanted with permanent tags. Male to female sex ratio was 1.06:1. Hellbenders were sexually dimorphic, as females were significantly longer and heavier than males. Total lengths for all captured animals ranged from 29.5 - 56.5 cm and mass ranged from 150.0 - 905.8 g. Seasonal linear movements for 12 individuals ranged from 0.8 - 70.2 m (mean …
Food Habits Of Salmo Trutta And Salvelinus Fontinalis (Pisces: Salmonidae) In Relation To Seasonal Changes And Mitigative Liming Effects In Dogway Fork Of The Cranberry River, West Virginia., Jason A. Morgan
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Dogway Fork, a tributary of the Cranberry River in West Virginia, is acidic due to acid precipitation and poorly buffered soils. This study is part of a long-term investigation involving the effects of continuous limestone neutralization on the fishes and benthos of an acid stream. Prior to treatment in 1988, the stream had a pH of 4.5 and there were no fish present. Since treatment began, the pH of the stream has risen to 6.8. Nine species of fish have been collected and six species have reproduced following the improvement in water quality. Densities of specific acid-sensitive benthic macroinvertebrates have …
The Effect Of Music On Visuospatial Memory, James L. Mccracken
The Effect Of Music On Visuospatial Memory, James L. Mccracken
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Music was utilized in an attempt to enhance visuospatial memory. Twenty-eight individuals, who attended a United Methodist Church in southern West Virginia, were randomly assigned to experimental and control conditions. The experimental group was exposed to new age and classical compositions, counterbalanced for order effects. The new age and classical selections were of similar tempo and complexity. The control group received two relaxation periods, of a comparable length to the music presented to the experimental group. The 7/24 Spatial Recall Test was used to measure visuospatial memory. The measure was administered to each participant immediately after exposure to the music …
Feeding Niches Of Forest Salamanders: Indirect Effects Of Gypsy Moth Pesticides On Prey Selection And Potential Overlap Between Adults Of Six Species, Sandra Raimondo
Feeding Niches Of Forest Salamanders: Indirect Effects Of Gypsy Moth Pesticides On Prey Selection And Potential Overlap Between Adults Of Six Species, Sandra Raimondo
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Amphibian declines and deformities are indictors of pollution and other environmental impacts. Pesticides, such as Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (Bt), may produce non-target effects on salamanders by impacting their food supply, ultimately resulting in population declines. Salamanders were used as an assessment tool of pesticide impacts before populations decline. Diet analysis determined if Bt affected food consumption of two salamander species (Desmognathus ochrophaeus and P. cinereus). Nine plots in the Monongahela National Forest, West Virginia were used in this study. Three plots were sprayed with Bt in 1997 and 1998, three were sprayed with a gypsy moth …

Ecology And Natural History Of Rana Clamitans Melanota In West Virginia, Alison M. Rogers
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Fourteen study sites were sampled with aquatic funnel traps and D-frame net sweeps in the plateau and mountain region of West Virginia to determine differences in larval period. Larval stage class abundance and larval total length and mass measurements were recorded from February to December 1997. Larval stage classes 25 and 26, the first free living stages, were absent from the plateau region from February to April, but were present in the mountain region. Pre-transformation larval stages, 40 through 44, were found from May through October, and peaked in July. Significant relationships were found with simple linear regression analysis between …
Interaction Of Laminin Beta2 With Eps8 And Desmin In Muscle Cells, Luke Xueliang Cui
Interaction Of Laminin Beta2 With Eps8 And Desmin In Muscle Cells, Luke Xueliang Cui
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Laminin β2 is localized to the synaptic basal lamina (BL) in muscle and glomerular BL in kidney. To find interacting proteins, a mouse kidney cDNA library was screened with domain I of rat laminin β2 using the yeast two-hybrid system. Fifteen positive clones were found. The DNA sequence of three each of these clones corresponded to the phosphoprotein Eps8 (epidermal growth factor receptor pathway substrate clone 8, which is tyrosine phosphorylated after EGF stimulation) and the intermediate filament (IF) protein keratin. To determine if this interaction occurred in muscle cells, C2 cells transfected with the rat …
The Role Of Retinoids And Protein Kinase C In Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell Proliferation And Function, Shaoshan Wang
The Role Of Retinoids And Protein Kinase C In Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell Proliferation And Function, Shaoshan Wang
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The structural and functional changes in the arterial wall of humans and animals accompany the development of hypertension and atherosclerosis. Hence, great interest exists in the mechanisms that govern vascular smooth muscle cell contraction and proliferation. Rat aortic rings maintained in organ culture show a significant loss of contractility; whereas, vascular smooth muscle cells in culture quickly dedifferentiate into a secretory phenotype with a marked capacity for proliferation. The addition of all-trans retinoic acid (RA) and retinol to the plasma-containing medium preserved the contractile response of cultured vessels. Removal of endothelium prior to culture abolished these effects. All-trans retinoic acid …
