22-An Archaeological Reconnaissance Survey To Locate Remains Of Fort St. Joseph (20be23) In Niles, Michigan, William Cremin, Renee Lutes-Kurtzweil, Christine Mcmillan, Michael S. Nassaney

Archaeological Reports

An archaeological reconnaissance survey was conducted in search of material remains of Fort St. Joseph in a 15-acre parcel owned by the City of Niles, Michigan. The French established the settlement in 1691 for religious, military, and commercial purposes and it served as an important frontier outpost for nearly a century. The British came to control the fort in 1761 until the Spanish briefly captured it two decades later. The site, which was nominated to the National Register of Historic Places in the 1970s, has local, regional, national, and global significance. Its changing fortunes have given Niles the nickname, "The …

Locomotion In Sturgeon: Function Of The Pectoral Fins, C. D. Wilga, G. V. Lauder Jan 1999

Locomotion In Sturgeon: Function Of The Pectoral Fins, C. D. Wilga, G. V. Lauder

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Pectoral fins are one of the major features of locomotor design in ray-finned fishes and exhibit a well-documented phylogenetic transition from basal to derived clades. In percomorph fishes, the pectoral fins are often used to generate propulsive force via oscillatory movements, and pectoral fin propulsion in this relatively derived clade has been analyzed extensively. However, in the plesiomorphic pectoral fin condition, exemplified by sturgeon, pectoral fins extend laterally from the body in a generally horizontal orientation, have been assumed to generate lift to balance lift forces and moments produced by the heterocercal tail, and are not oscillated to generate propulsive …

Expression Of Cell Adhesion In Molecules In Murine Placentas And A Placental Cell Line, Jeffery Bowen, J. S. Hunt

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Integrins and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) are required for normal placental development. In this study, integrin subunits α4, αv, β1, and β3, and VCAM-1 were investigated for expression in uteroplacental units (gestation day [g.d.] 6 and 8) and placentas (g.d. 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18) of Swiss-Webster mice. All subunits and VCAM-1 mRNA (identified by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction [RT-PCR]) and protein (detected by immunofluorescence) were present in all tissues throughout gestation. VCAM-1 was expressed strongly in the ectoplacental cone and trophoblast giant cells, α4 was expressed strongly by trophoblast giant cells and moderately by spongiotrophoblast and …

Effect Of Human Disturbance On Small Mammal Communities In Itasca State Park, Minnesota, Nancy L. Staus, Kathleen Conforti, Leslie N. Clapper, Jennifer A. Longhenry, C. C. Schoenbauer, Michael S. Rentz, John R. Tester

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

We determined effects of different levels of human disturbance on small mammal richness and relative abundance from live-trapping data obtained in Itasca State Park in northwestern Minnesota. We developed a quantitative measure of human disturbance based on disturbance units and trapped small mammals on three study sites, each reflecting a different level of disturbance. Our data revealed that small mammal diversity decreased with increasing human disturbance. Amount of ground cover and litter depth also appeared to be important in explaining differences in the demographic patterns of small mammals among sites.

Paper And Pen: Assessment Resource Kit, Margaret Forster, Geoff N. Masters

Assessment Resource Kit

A common method of assessment is to present students with a series of questions or prompts and to use students' written responses as evidence of their levels of knowledge, competence, understanding or attitude. We refer to assessments of this kind as 'paper and pen ' assessments. This issue on paper and pen assessment in the Assessment Resource Kit (ARK) magazine series contains five articles: 1. What is paper and pen assessment? 2. A variety of answer formats; 3. Teacher designed paper and pen assessments; 4. Professionally developed tests; 5. Designing paper and pen assessments.

Detection Of Gap-43 In Goldfish Brain, Tifffany R. Hartman Jan 1999

Detection Of Gap-43 In Goldfish Brain, Tifffany R. Hartman

McNair Scholars Journal

The concept of learning and memory is a neurological process believed to reside in the nervous system of living organisms. In particular the growth associated protein, GAP-43, has been shown to alter its state of phosphorylation via a protein kinase C mediated reaction following long term potentiation, a paradigm of learning and memory. Most recent studies of GAP-43 in goldfish (Carassius auratus L) have focused on its presence in regenerating or developing optic nerves. The present study seeks to determine the existence of GAP-43 in the goldfish brain and secondly, quantify phosphorylated isoforms of GAP-43 before and after active avoidance …

Carboxy-Terminal Conversion Of Profibrillin To Fibrillin At A Basic Site By Pace/Furin-Like Activity Required For Incorporation In The Matrix, Michael Raghunath, Elizabeth A. Putnam, Timothy Ritty, Daniel Hamstra, Eun-Sook Park, Mathias Tschödrich-Rotter, Reiner Peters, Alnawaz Rehemtulla, Dianna M. Milewicz

Public and Community Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Fibrillin-1, the main component of 10-12 nm microfibrils of the extracellular matrix, is synthesized as profibrillin and proteolytically processed to fibrillin. The putative cleavage site has been mapped to the carboxy-terminal domain of profibrillin-1, between amino acids arginine 2731 and serine 2732, by a spontaneous mutation in this recognition site that prevents profibrillin conversion. This site contains a basic amino acid recognition sequence (R-G-R-K-R-R) for proprotein convertases of the furin/PACE family. In this study, we use a mini-profibrillin protein to confirm the cleavage in the carboxy-terminal domain by both fibroblasts and recombinantly expressed furin/PACE, PACE4, PC1/3 and PC2. Site-directed mutagenesis …

Over the Rim is the first book about an important but little-known expedition sent by Brigham Young to explore southern Utah. Led by Mormon apostle Parley P. Pratt, the party traveled from Salt Lake City south across the rim of the Great Basin to the Virgin River near future St. George. They brought back to Mormon leaders their first detailed portrait of the country to the south that the church planned to settle. By 1849, the new Mormon settlement at Great Salt Lake City was taking on an air of permanence as companies of Latter-day Saints continued to arrive. Brigham …
