Assessment And Management Of The Arroyo Del Coyote Watershed, Sandia National Laboratories And Environs, New Mexico, Richard M. Renn
Assessment And Management Of The Arroyo Del Coyote Watershed, Sandia National Laboratories And Environs, New Mexico, Richard M. Renn
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
The Environmental Restoration Project managed by Sandia National Laboratories/New Mexico and sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy is responsible for the investigation, remediation, and monitoring of sites within the confines of Kirtland Air Force Base. These environmental restoration sites are areas where there is a documented or potential risk for the off-site migration of contaminants due to past uses of the land. Recent implementation of the Clean Water Action Plan has encouraged government agencies to deal with multiple environmental issues and sites as integrated components on a watershed scale as opposed to viewing them as individual problems with little …
What's Past Is Prologue: Imagining The Socialist Nation In Cuba And In Hungary, Patricia D. Fox
What's Past Is Prologue: Imagining The Socialist Nation In Cuba And In Hungary, Patricia D. Fox
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Patricia D. Fox's article, "What's Past is Prologue: Imagining the Socialist Nation in Cuba and in Hungary," examines the symbolic mooring of Cuban and Hungarian identity, recuperated Caliban from William Shakespeare's The Tempest and an ever conflicted Faustus/Adam from Imre Madách's Az ember tragédiája, respectively. Despite serial cosmological fragmentations and political upheaval, the present analysis holds that production and reproduction of these founding figures in the process of imagining the socialist nation represent an ongoing litigation of meaning. This process then conserves a marked thematic continuity through temporal conceptions, totality of exegesis, the mix of rational and mythical, and the …
Resolving Problems In Engineering Ethics: Precept And Example, Joel C. Adair
Resolving Problems In Engineering Ethics: Precept And Example, Joel C. Adair
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis has served to accomplish several objectives. First, a foundation was laid for the consideration of ethical factors in an engineering context. This was done by first establishing the need for ethical judgement in the engineering disciplines. A summary of several significant classical ethical theories followed, providing several tools with which to evaluate decisions that have ethical implications. Finally, the conclusion was made that the best framework for making ethical decisions is found in the application of the virtues espoused by the gospel of Jesus Christ.

The Comic In Literature As A General Systems Phenomenon, Vera Zubarev
The Comic In Literature As A General Systems Phenomenon, Vera Zubarev
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Vera Zubarev proposes in her article, "The Comic in Literature as a General Systems Phenomenon," that the definitions of and about aspects of dramatic genre are best articulated from the theoretical approach of systems theory. It is assumed that self-regulation is a basic element, that is, any object, any system or phenomenon has its own structure, fulfills its own function, performs its own process, has its own operator, and maintains its genesis. A number of new notions can be drawn from this proposition with regard to the concepts of potential in dramatic genre and the comic, as follows. 1) The …

The Age Of Birds In Nebraska, Paul A. Johnsgard
The Age Of Birds In Nebraska, Paul A. Johnsgard
Papers in Ornithology
If each mile of highway I-80 in Nebraska represented a million years of natural history, then the 450 miles from the 60th St. on-ramp in Omaha to the westernmost exit at the Wyoming border would represent the 450 million years that encompass the time that evidence of life has been found on earth. The earth itself is more than four billion years old, or ten times older than the time scale of life described here.
The 450 million years of life on earth are correlated to the distance from Omaha to the Wyoming border, and the flora and fauna of …
Field Evaluation Of Radiotransmitters For Northern Pocket Gophers, Gary W. Witmer, Michael Pipas
Field Evaluation Of Radiotransmitters For Northern Pocket Gophers, Gary W. Witmer, Michael Pipas
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
A field study was conducted in northern Idaho from June to November 1995 to evaluate the design and functional aspects of four types of Radio-transmitters for use on northern pocket gophers (Thomomys talpoides) as well as the effects of the transmitters on behavior of the animals. Twenty-five of 46 northern pocket gophers were fitted in the field with one of three models of radio-collars (AVM, NWRC, and Holohil), nine received Wildlife Materials abdominal implant transmitters (surgery conducted off-site), and 12 without transmitters served as controls. Study animals were relocated every second to fourth day until the end of …
An Evaluation And Comparison Of The Ace And Brace Airfield Models, David W. Wiliams
An Evaluation And Comparison Of The Ace And Brace Airfield Models, David W. Wiliams
Theses and Dissertations
Airfields are a critical aspect of our military's ability to project power or respond to crises throughout the world. It is crucial that mobility planners have an effective means to estimate the capacity of these airfields. The objective of this research is to examine common mobility metrics and evaluate existing means of measuring them. Currently, Air Mobility Command has two models, the Airfield Capacity Estimator (ACE) and the Base Resource and Capabilities Estimator (BRACE), that were designed to estimate the resource requirements and capacities of an airfield. This study offers a critical evaluation and comparison of the two models. Discrepancies …

Incidental Memory For Spatial Information In Young Children As A Function Of Age And Gender, Isabelle D. Cherney
Incidental Memory For Spatial Information In Young Children As A Function Of Age And Gender, Isabelle D. Cherney
Student Work
The purpose of the present study was to investigate Hasher and Zacks' (1979,1984) automaticity theory of memory for spatial location information in young children using two incidental memory tasks. A total of 96 three- and fiveyear- olds (48 boys and 48 girls) were randomly assigned to either the "manipulation condition" (MC) or the "observation condition" (OC). In order to assess task difficulty, half of the participants manipulated a total of 18 genderstereotyped animal toys (male, female, neutral) and half of the participants a total of 9. After a 2 minute filler task, the participants were instructed to return the animals …

Manifesto For A Revolution Of The West, Armando Gnisci
Manifesto For A Revolution Of The West, Armando Gnisci
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Armando Gnisci's article, "Manifesto for a Revolution of the West," is a proposal for solidarity and action he understands as "revolution" against inequities and injustice. The world, conquered by the Eurocentric will-to-power, already centrifuged and spread across the globe, is now in sight of a new era. Images of the near future are appearing on the horizon: the rich and powerful North dominates and wastes the South. The cruelty of this Brave New World is contrasted with the utopean diaspora of de-colonizers, the "Creolitisation" of mind and cultures, the resistance of differences, and revolution. The first image, to which we …

Environmental Violations, Legal Penalties, And Reputation Costs, John Lott, Jonathan M. Karpoff, Graeme Rankine
Environmental Violations, Legal Penalties, And Reputation Costs, John Lott, Jonathan M. Karpoff, Graeme Rankine
Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series
This paper examines the sizes and determinants of fines, damage awards, remediation costs, and market value losses imposed on companies that violate environmental laws. We find that legal penalties are not significantly related to firm size, indicating no support for views that large companies face unusually small legal penalties. In fact, we can explain very little of the cross-sectional variation in legal penalties, lending support to arguments that such penalties are highly variable and unpredictable. On average, firms violating environmental laws suffer statistically significant losses in the market value of firm equity. The losses are of similar magnitude to the …
