Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Mission Level Simulation, Jennifer G. Walston Mar 1999

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Mission Level Simulation, Jennifer G. Walston

Theses and Dissertations

We develop an object-oriented simulation that models the surveillance and Active Suppression of Enemy Air Defense (SEAD) missions of the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) RQ-1A Predator. The simulation, written in Java using the Silk simulation package, interfaces with a Reactive Tabu Search routing algorithm to provide optimal UAV routes. The routing algorithm is called by the simulation to account for changes in weather conditions and to provide a means of dynamically retasking the UAV. The simulation and analysis support a UAV Battlelab initiative to test the operational effects of proposed changes in Predator performance and UAV capability to perform in …

The Changes Of Femoral Artery Harmonics In Hypoxia:An Animal Study, Tyng-Guey Wang, Yio-Wha Shau, Jeng-Yi Shieh, Juey-Jen Hwang, Chung-Li Wang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Using the non-invasive method to monitor the pulmonary artery pressure in the exercise training program of the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients might reduce the incidence of cardiac complication from the pulmonary hypertension and hypoxia. The purpose of this study was to detect the femoral artery pulse pressure and its harmonic changes of the rabbits in the hypoxia status.Ten rabbits underwent the femoral artery catherization for detecting their femoral artery pressure and their harmonics. Ten percent carbon dioxide mixed gas was inhaled to reduce the oxygen saturation of the rabbits from 95 % to 90% or lower. The mean femoral …

As the population of minority pupils continues to increase, the need for special education personnel to identify and educate culturally and linguistically diverse exceptional students will also rise. Continuing shortages of qualified personnel in special education have been declared a national emergency, with "diagnostic staff" ranked as the fourth highest area of need. Shortages are particularly severe along the Texas-Mexico border, where a 1997 needs assessment predicted a need for 41 diagnosticians, preferably bilingual, within the ensuing 5 years. This paper describes initial steps in the development of Project DEED (Distance Education for Educational Diagnosticians), a federally funded distance learning …

Combustion Properties Of Biomass, B. M. Jenkins, Larry Lin Baxter 8507091, T. R. Miles Jr, T. R. Miles Mar 1999

Combustion Properties Of Biomass, B. M. Jenkins, Larry Lin Baxter 8507091, T. R. Miles Jr, T. R. Miles

Faculty Publications

Properties of biomass relevant to combustion are briefly reviewed. The compositions of biomass among fuel types are variable, especially with respect to inorganic constituents important to the critical problems of fouling and slagging. Alkali and alkaline earth metals, in combination with other fuel elements such as silica and sulfur, and facilitated by the presence of chlorine, are responsible for many undesirable reactions in combustion furnaces and power boilers. Reductions in the concentrations of alkali metals and chlorine, created by leaching the elements from the fuel with water, yield remarkable improvements in ash fusion temperatures and confirm much of what is …

Analysis Of Usaf Battlelabs' Communication Infrastructure Over Various Protocols, Rocky A. Favorito, David M. Mcillece

Theses and Dissertations

As a result of the doctrines exposed in the Air Force's "Global Engagement: A Vision for the 21st Century Air Force," the concept of a "Battlelab" was devised to support and develop the key warfighting capabilities needed in the next century. Although geographically separated, these labs must have the capability to exchange information with each other in a "Virtual Battlelab Environment" (VBE). Although many types of data will be exchanged, only variable-bit-rate (VBR) video and distributed interactive simulation (DIS) traffic are modeled in the VBE. The research described in this thesis utilizes a systems engineering approach to investigate the performance …

Simsat: A Satellite System Simulator And Experimental Test Bed For Air Force Research, James E. Colebank, R. Dan Jones, Randall D. Pollak, Donald M. Mannebach, George R. Nagy

Theses and Dissertations

SIMSAT (the SIMulation SATellite) is an AFIT-sponsored program to develop a laboratory-based physical satellite simulator. SIMSAT supports experimentation in areas of attitude control, precision pointing, and vibration suppression. SIMSAT development began with the purchase of a three-axis gas bearing which simulates a torque-free space environment. SIMSAT subsystems provide power, attitude control, telemetry, and structural support to experimental payloads. Project challenges included integration of attitude control software/hardware, high-output power storage devices, remote communications, high-frequency data collection, structural design, and computer display outputs.

Strategies For Steganalysis Of Bitmap Graphics Files, Christopher J. Fogle Mar 1999

Strategies For Steganalysis Of Bitmap Graphics Files, Christopher J. Fogle

Theses and Dissertations

Steganography is the art and science of communicating through covert channels. The goal of steganography is to hide the fact that a message is even being transmitted. In the context of today's digital world, this ancient practice is enjoying resurgence due to the plethora of hiding places made possible by modern information media. Of particular concern is the use of graphics image files to conceal both legitimate and criminal communications.

Structural Emergence And The Collaborative Behavior Of Autonomous Nano-Satellites, Daniel J. Petrovich Mar 1999

Structural Emergence And The Collaborative Behavior Of Autonomous Nano-Satellites, Daniel J. Petrovich

Theses and Dissertations

The collaborative behavior of nano-satellites in a zero-gravity environment is explored, and satellite characteristics are proposed that maximize constellation robustness and minimize manufacturing costs. Behavioral algorithms are proposed to facilitate both swarming and structural formation and are validated using the Structural Emergence Simulator (STEMS) Graphical User Interface (GUl). A payload of multiple satellites is placed in a zero-gravity environment and released to re-configure autonomously into a pre-designed structure. Data transmission between satellites is not permitted during the swarming phase of the structure formation mission. A binary behavior algorithm is invented that produces a direction and magnitude solution to the satellite …

Modeling And Analysis Of Aerial Port Operations, Timothy W. Albrecht Mar 1999

Modeling And Analysis Of Aerial Port Operations, Timothy W. Albrecht

Theses and Dissertations

The focus of this thesis effort is gaining useful insight into aerial port operations by employing an animated simulation. Understanding airfield capacity, resources, and functioning allows greater accuracy and efficiency in both planning for future force structures and matching mobility assets with commanders' objectives. Two current simulations, ACE (Airfield Capacity Estimator) and BRACE (Base Resource Allocation and Capabilities Estimator), model mobility activities at the base level with some deficiencies. The model proposed by this thesis, APOM (Aerial Port Operations Model), will provide the mobility analyst an animated simulation with two, new measures of aerial port operations; a real-time estimate of …

Pilot Inventory Complex Adaptive System (Picas): An Artificial Life Approach To Managing Pilot Retention, Martin P. Gaupp Mar 1999

Pilot Inventory Complex Adaptive System (Picas): An Artificial Life Approach To Managing Pilot Retention, Martin P. Gaupp

Theses and Dissertations

The retention of skilled pilots continues to be a problem that plagues the United States Air Force. After spending millions of dollars on training and education, it is disheartening to see the mass exodus of experienced aviators from the Air Force that has been occurring in the past decade. Many blame the economy, others the Air Force itself but few are able to accurately predict how or why they are all leaving. The current personnel models do not adequately determine retention rates. Complex adaptive systems theory, however, might provide some insight. By modeling the system at the pilot's level, allowing …

Institute for Sustainable Solutions Publications and Presentations

The last half-century has seen momentous and accelerating changes in humankind's economic activities, political relations, and social and demographic profile. A prominent feature of this change is the increasing scale of human impact on Earth's natural biophysical systems: the climate system, stratospheric ozone, biodiversity, terrestrial and marine food-producing ecosystems, and the great cycles of water, nitrogen, and sulfur (Meyer 1996, Vitousek et al. 1997). These systems sustain the conditions on which life depends, and their weakening may therefore have profound long-term implications for human population health (McMichael 1993, Last 1997).
