Developing Online Learning Materials For Higher Education: An Overview Of Current Issues, C. Jayne Brahler, Nils S. Peterson, Emily C. Johnson Mar 1999

Developing Online Learning Materials For Higher Education: An Overview Of Current Issues, C. Jayne Brahler, Nils S. Peterson, Emily C. Johnson

Health and Sport Science Faculty Publications

The changing roles and challenges for higher education and the increased productivity required of faculty are driving forces for the development of more diverse and efficient teaching methods. Educational trends are toward more learner-centered materials. In response to these trends, colleges and universities are now offering courses at a distance and in forms other than traditional delivery.

Online courseware materials may be a viable means of fulfilling these numerous requirements but are very resource-intensive to develop. Multiple approaches to developing online learning have been tried, with limited success. The primary approach has been for faculty to enter their own course …

Echoes Of The “Misfounding” Of Public Administration: The Voices Of Generation X, Gary S. Marshall, Christine M. Reed Mar 1999

Echoes Of The “Misfounding” Of Public Administration: The Voices Of Generation X, Gary S. Marshall, Christine M. Reed

Public Administration Faculty Publications

This paper build on previous research into the "X Generation, " in particular their apparent cynicism about all theories of organization as being mere strategies of manipulation. Their voices were described in that study as "the voice of a new cohort of students that we will increasingly find in our classrooms" (Marshall, 1997). Current MPA students at the University of Nebraska at Omaha participated in focus group discussions designed to elicit information about their motivations for enrolling in our graduate program. Initial findings confirmed the organizational commitment of older age cohorts, as well as their identification with large governmental institutions. …

North American Environment And Its Linkages To Trade, Nicole A. Kleman Mar 1999

North American Environment And Its Linkages To Trade, Nicole A. Kleman

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

This article will follow a deductive approach in order to comprehend the intricacies involved in the NAFTA and NAAEC's environmental provisions. It will also contextualize the inseparable relationship between environmental protection and trade which is depicted in these agreements. Part I will review and analyze the NAFTA's environmental provisions, focusing on their relevant mechanisms, nexus to trade, and shortcomings. In Part II, the uniqueness and effectiveness of the formula developed to reconcile trade and the environment in the form of the NAAEC will be introduced. Part III is divided into three categories: the Commission for Environmental Cooperation ("CEC"), Dispute Resolution …

Elsohly's Thc Suppository Could Replace Marijuana For Medical Use, Rick Hynum

University of Mississippi News

UNIVERSITY, Miss. -- In the wake of a new government-sponsored study examining the health benefits and risks of marijuana, a University of Mississippi scientist may have devised a solution that could satisfy all sides of the ongoing debate: a suppository form of the drug THC that will likely work better than a cigarette or a capsule.

Um Scientist's Skin Patch Could Be Key To Saving Rare New Zealand Parrot, Rick Hynum

University of Mississippi News

UNIVERSITY, Miss. -- The kakapos of New Zealand may be the unluckiest birds in the world. For starters, they can't fly. They're stuck on a group of remote, albeit gorgeous, islands with too little food. Only 54 of them remain in existence. And, as for mating and reproduction, well, let's just say the thrill is gone from their love lives.

High-Grade Paper Recycling: A Program Management Perspective, Rodger L. Carter Mar 1999

High-Grade Paper Recycling: A Program Management Perspective, Rodger L. Carter

Theses and Dissertations

Recycling of high-grade paper is one method of reducing the use of natural resources and the amount of waste being emitted into the environment, both in the process of manufacturing and in the disposal of unneeded documents. The Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC) is a significant user of high-grade paper, thus recycling represents a potential saving to society in the form of lessened negative impact on the environment as the result of AFMC operations. The possibility also exists for AFMC to reduce operating costs. The purpose of this study is to explore means of reducing high-grade paper disposal by AFMC, …

Modeling Chemical Absorption Through Membranes, Jeffrey M. Hemmes Mar 1999

Modeling Chemical Absorption Through Membranes, Jeffrey M. Hemmes

Theses and Dissertations

Understanding the processes involved in dermal penetration of chemicals and drugs is important to both toxicologists and pharmacologists. Researchers developing new drugs are interested in enhancing the penetration of chemicals through the skin, while environmental professionals are interested in limiting such penetration. For both types of applications, predictive biologically-based mathematical models can be very useful in understanding the processes involved, particularly when such models are based on physiological and biochemical parameters which can be measured experimentally. In this thesis we study two existing physiologically-based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models that predict concentrations of neat and aqueous dibromomethane (DBM) absorbed into and through …

A Structured Approach To Software Tool Integration, Penelope A. Noe Mar 1999

A Structured Approach To Software Tool Integration, Penelope A. Noe

Theses and Dissertations

As the trend towards commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software continues, civilian companies and government agencies alike are battling with the challenge of making multiple software packages and applications work together. Many of these companies and agencies have attempted to integrate the software tools to form a coherent system that satisfies their goals, often without the use of a step by step approach guiding the effort. Many researchers in the field of software tool integration have determined the areas that need to be addressed when tools are integrated. Some researchers have developed and expanded upon a theoretical model for integration. This model …

Market And Policy Incentives For Livestock Production And Watershed Protection In Arenal, Costa Rica, March 1999, Bruce Aylward, Jaime Echeverria, Katherine Allen, Ronald Mejías, Ina T. Porras

Monteverde Institute: Economy and Resource Management

Conventional wisdom amongst environmentalists holds that the cutting of tropical forest for livestock production is not only bad business but also bad for the environment. In particular, it is thought that conversion to pasture leads to rising sedimentation of waterways and reservoirs, an increase in flooding and loss of dry season water supply. In the case of Lake Arenal, Costa Rica this conventional wisdom is stood on its head in an evaluation of the market and policy incentives guiding land use in the Río Chiquito watershed of the Arenal region of Costa Rica. The study suggests that ranching, dairy and …

Marginal Discrepancy Of Components Utilized For Implant Framework Construction, Mathew Thomas Kattadiyil

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study evaluated marginal fit discrepancy of the abutment-implant body interface employing various components commonly utilized for implant framework fabrication. Four types of components ( castable plastic patterns, premachined gold abutments, premachined titanium abutments and CAD-CAM custom premachined titanium abutments) were evaluated. Five castable plastic patterns and five premachined gold abutme~ts from each of two manufacturers, five premachined titanium abutments and five CAD-CAM custom premachined titanium abutments were used. Components were affixed to a 3.75 x 10 mm dental implant and standardized measurements were obtained of the abutment-implant interface using a computerassisted microscope at various experimental time intervals. Measurements of …
